Microsoft's Transition to a Devices and Services Company
On October 9 2012 in a letter to shareholders Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled his plan to transform Microsoft from a software maker into a devices and services company. Shortly after they released Windows 8 with a familiar UI across PCs, tablets, Xbox, and phones and their own Surface tablet. On July 11, 2013 Ballmer announced the sweeping 'One Microsoft' reorganization of Microsoft around function rather than products in a long memo to employees. On September 2, 2013 Microsoft Corp. and Nokia Corp. announced that the boards of directors for both companies had entered into a transaction whereby Microsoft will purchase substantially all of Nokia's Devices & Services business, license Nokia's patents, and license and use Nokia's mapping services. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. On August 23, 2013 Microsoft announced that Steve Ballmer will retire from his CEO position within 12 months and that the company's board has begun the process of looking for a new CEO. On September 26, 2013 Microsoft introduced new reporting segments:
One year after it was initially announced Microsoft's challenging transition from a software platform provider to a devices and services company is well underway. This board is intended to supplement the SI Nokia Corp. board until Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia Devices & Services is completed. It is also intended to supplement two existing SI Boards:
• Microsoft Corp. (moderated by Don Green) Subject 53202
• Windows Phone (moderated by Zax) Subject 58527
