Ebay in Peril? Sniping at fault.?

The Average selling price has fallen 39% on ebay.
auctionbytes.com
Now they have sold more items and that compensates by the listing fees, but more and more sellers are seeing their interest in Ebay fade away with the selling prices.

What has caused this? In my opinion it is caused by one main thing.....the rise of snipers, sniper sites and sniper programs.

What is a sniper? He finds an auction, but does not place a bid. he uses a sniper site and loads in his high bid and then waits for the end of the auction. He usually does not show anywhere until the end.....why alert people to the potential competition?
At the end the sniper site(located on a high bandwidth server on a fast line) waits until the last 1-2 seconds and then fires in his bid.
Anyone else watching sees the end of the auction and a final price and he has zero chance to respond, especially if he is on a 33.6 dialup line. Even cable or ADSL have trouble competing with sniper sites right on a T1 or higher line. All his anticipation and waiting is gone. True, he could have placed a high proxy bid in the Ebay proxy system, but human nature being what it is people want to be part of the action, bid, rebid etc up to the end. Snipers are usually dealers or experienced collectors and after they set their snipe, they just walk away and let the sniper site work for them.

This cheats both the seller, who is deprived of a real auction that people bid, bid, bid and it settles to a final bid. It also cheats the average bidder who is not a web fiend, who does not have a high speed line, and who ends up with a bad taste as the auction ends at a price below what he would have paid if allowed to work up to in bid by bid in the traditional way. That is what he wants. It also cheats Ebay as this lower average means a lower final value reward to ebay.

Ebay knows this? Why do they do it this way? Some people suspect there is a collector high in Ebay management who likes to snipe, who sits on a high speed line and just grabs and grabs and grabs. A pox on him.

What Ebay should do is have a variable end point where the auction does not end for, say 5 minutes after the last bid, as they do in Europe.

Will Ebay do this? They had better or they are going to lose half their sellers this Christmas.

Bill
