OK, i want to make this as short as possible. My Dad does a lot of things well. One of those things is playing music. For the last few years, he has taught me how to play several stringed instruments. Each week, he uses a real song to show something that he wants me to learn. Last week, it was The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel. I thought it was no big deal, but the other guys in my band thought it was way cool. They made me play it on acoustic guitar and sing it in front of our friends (groupies). I hate to sing, but they liked it and want to keep the song. The reason i am starting this thread is that i want to know what people think the words of the song mean. thanks This is what the words are: Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk to you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seed while I was sleeping And a vision, that was planted in my brain Still remains within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone Through narrow streets of cobblestone Beneath a halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night and touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw Tenthousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs, that voices never shared No one dared disturb the sound of silence Fools, said I, you do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls, whispered in the sound of silence | ||||||||||||
