Murder Mystery: Who Killed Yale Student Suzanne Jovin?

On December 4th, 1998, shortly after dropping off the keys to a Yale University car she had borrowed to take to a pizza party she helped organize for mentally retarded kids, Yale student Suzanne Jovin was found two miles from campus fatally wounded. It is now one year later and the crime not only remains unsolved, but it appears little progress has been made on the case. Why? I contend it is because the New Haven, Connecticut police have spent the majority of their time and resources focusing on just one suspect, Ms. Jovin's thesis advisor, Professor James Van de Velde-- an innocent man.

I've known Jim since junior high school. Naturally I've spent a considerable amount of time following the investigation and have spent a number of hours talking to Jim about it. We both agree that even though not a shred of evidence has ever been found that should even make him a suspect -- no blood, fiber, fingerprint, motive, etc. -- the only way to clear his name is to find the person who actually did it. Thus, this thread is not intended to merely be a rehash of material released to the public via press conferences and media reports, but a very real attempt to find the killer(s).

In my years here on Silicon Investor I've met some amazingly sharp people. I truly believe that if we all put our heads together we can deduce exactly what must have happened one year ago today. I truly believe that once we do that, finding the killer(s) will be easy. As I live so close to New Haven, I personally will track down leads and interview whomever we all feel should be interviewed.

Lastly, and most importantly, although I never met Suzanne Jovin, I feel a profound sense of loss with her passing. By all accounts she was an intelligent, charming, beautiful, caring person for whom everyone had nothing but praise. No parent should ever have to bury their child. The least the Jovin family deserves is closure. Until this case is solved they don't even have that.

- Jeff
