Sonic Systems.
Sonic Systems has a remarkable technology that can actually detect a siren, coming from any direction. Using this technology, they have established a wireless 'pre-emptive' traffic control system. When installed at an intersection, the Sonem 2000 system hears the siren, determines the direction it is coming from, and can control the traffic signal such that the emergency vehicle crosses the intersection with the correct signal.
Sonic has partnered with Orbital (a big-time company), which has its own pre-emptive system to control city buses, and assist them with traffic signals so that the buses are not late. Sonic's competitive advantage is that there are no modifications required to any of the vehicles. Competitive systems require that each vehicle be retrofitted with a transmitter. Because Sonic detects the existing sirens on all emergency vehicles, there are no vehicle modifications required.
Sonic has also completed it's prototype for an in-vehicle siren detection system and is talking with several automobile companies about testing. With the increased quietness of today's cars, along with the increased use of car phones and sound equipment, it is harder to detect an approaching siren. Using Sonic's system, the car itself will detect the siren and gently warn the driver in time to pull over.
Sonic's technology is truly amazing.
Several existing tests and evaluations will be completed shortly. New tests of the Sonem system or the in-car siren detector could be announced at anytime.
