IOTA Cryptocurrency Shut Down Its Entire Network After a Wallet Breach

The nonprofit organization behind the IOTA cryptocurrency shut down its entire network this week after someone exploited a vulnerability in their wallet app to steal funds.

ZDNet reports: The attack happened this week, Wednesday, on February 12, 2020, according to a message the foundation posted on its official Twitter account. According to a status page detailing the incident, within 25 minutes of receiving reports that hackers were stealing funds from user wallets, the IOTA Foundation shut down "Coordinator," a node in the IOTA network that puts the final seal of approval on any IOTA currency transactions.

The never-before-seen move was meant to prevent hackers from executing new thefts, but also had the side-effect of effectively shut down the entire IOTA cryptocurrency...

IOTA members said hackers used an exploit in "a third-party integration" of Trinity, a mobile and desktop wallet app developed by the IOTA Foundation. Based on current evidence, confirmed by the IOTA team, it is believed that hackers targeted at least 10 high-value IOTA accounts and used the Trinity exploit to steal funds.

Sunday the team released "a safe version" of their Trinity Desktop "to allow users to check their balance and transactions. This version (1.4.0) removes the vulnerability announced on 12th February 2020..."

Their status page advised users to contact a member of the IOTA Foundation if their balance looks incorrect. "Please be aware that there are unfortunately active imposters posing as IOTA Foundation personnel on our Discord. Therefore it is important that you directly initiate contact with the IF or mod team yourself..."

"The Coordinator remains down for now as we finalise our remediation plan. You will not be able to send value transactions."

This article seems very relevant to IOTA, because the basis of the IOTA blockchain is ternary logic. Processors based on this logic would therefore be optimal for implementations of IOTA network nodes.

Korean researchers develop ternary semiconductor tech

Future semiconductors may perform logic with 0, 1, or 2 instead of the current binary system of 0 and 1 with the new technology.

A South Korean research team has successfully realised an energy-efficient ternary metal-oxide semiconductor on a large-sized wafer.

Professor Kyung Rok Kim of UNIST's Electrical & Computer Engineering Department and his team successfully created a semiconductor that operates in a ternary logic system instead of the current binary. The results of the test were published in scientific journal Nature Electronics.

Using the ternary system of 0, 1, 2 lessens the amount of information semiconductors need to process and does it faster, resulting in less power consumption, the team said. It will also help in miniaturising chips further.

For example, to express the number 128 in the current binary system, 8 "bits" will be required. With the ternary system, only 5 "trits" will be required.

Power leakage is a major obstacle in making semiconductors smaller. Packing more circuits in a smaller space exasperates the so-called tunneling effect that increases power leakage, which in turn requires devices to consume more electricity.

In their test, Kim's team deployed the ternary logic system dependent on the amount of power leakage to manage power output of devices.

rofessor Kim said if the semiconductor technology is commercialised, it could be a paradigm shifter that positively affects industries such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, Internet of Things, biochips and robots, all where semiconductors play a crucial role.

Samsung Electronics has been backing Kim's research since September 2017 via its Samsung's Science & Technology Foundation, which offers grants for promising technology projects.

Samsung is currently verifying the technology at its foundry business-run fab.

IOTA recovers from early losses as a blueprint for Coordicide update is unveiled

IOTA has recovered from an early Asian low $0.4181 to trade at $0/4300 by the time of writing. However, despite the resumed upside momentous, it is still down 1.5% on a day-to-day basis and down nearly 2% on a weekly basis.

The coin takes the 17th place in the global cryptocurrency market rating with the current market capitalization of $1.2 billion. An average trading volume is registered at $39 million, in line with a long-term average figure. IOTA is most actively traded on Bitfinex against BTC and USDT.

IOTA unveils blueprint for Coordicide

IOTA has launched a website for Coordicide update and revealed a blueprint for the Coordinator removal?. It's an important step for the company as it confirms its commitment to decentralization and scalability principles.

"Removing the Coordinator from the IOTA network will realize a long sought after goal in the field of DLT: scalability without centralization. The solution itself is inherently modular, meaning that users will have ultimate freedom to tailor the system to their individual needs. Its implementation will be a major milestone in the IOTA Foundation's goal of creating a truly enterprise-ready DLT," the company wrote in the accompanying blog post.

Iota Partners With Jaguar Land Rover on Crypto Rewards Program, Price Jumps 20%

Part of a plan to gather better information on road conditions and vehicle performance, Jaguar will distribute Iota’s Iota tokens to Smart Wallets tied to participating drivers.

The drivers will then be able to redeem them for various products including road tolls and even coffee, Jaguar says.

“In the future an autonomous car could drive itself to a charging station, recharge and pay, while its owner could choose to participate in the sharing economy — earning rewards from sharing useful data such as warning other cars of traffic jams,” Russell Vickers, a software architect at the company, commented in the press release.

The partnership with Iota forms part of Jaguar’s Destination Zero scheme, which aims to tackle accidents, congestion and emissions within the automotive industry.

Iota has jumped almost 20% in the 24 hours to press time on Monday.

“Our distributed ledger technology is perfectly suited to enable machine-to-machine payments for smart charging, parking and tolls, in addition to creating opportunities for drivers to earn their own digital currency,” Iota’s head of partnerships, Holger Köther, added.

Last week, Cointelegraph reported on how South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai had opted to use blockchain-related technology to pair its electric vehicles with drivers’ smartphones.
