Fireside chat with the CFO. This is the first time I've listened to Robert at length and he was very impressive. I expect the C Suite execs to be sharp and he was!

- DC is at 280 now with 100 in the US at AMC. Over 8,000 screens worldwide have DA. Very interesting offering coming in 2025, a DA/DV install that does not require the capex or re-design to the level of DC. This will be a % of box office model too.

- Interesting discussion on buybacks, Robert pushed back that they are only offsetting stock options, and specifically mentioned how they've taken advantage of share price weakness to reduce the share count.

- Two really funny quotes. He said their name is Dolby Labs not Dolby Save Money, highlighting they are an innovation company. But they have focused on expenses and have taken small restructurings in 6 of the last 10 quarters. The point was they take action when they see opportunities and don't wait for larger restructurings. He also said they have a team that still does basic research with PhD's with more degrees than a thermometer.

- Highlighted two instances where ultra-low latency is essential. One is while attending a live event with not great seats or a view, if you want to see a different view on your phone, it has to appear "live" since your surroundings are reacting in realtime. The other is in game betting, where a prop bet can be the next pitch or some other near term action.

Two thirds of the company's revenues come from what it terms foundational revenues, which consists of the primary audio codecs in digital audio, the analyst tells investors in a research note. The firm says that while those revenues have been pressured in recent years, there are some encouraging signs of stabilization in devices, which may be approaching a device refresh cycle, and a more encouraging inventory environment which would support increased production and shipments. (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. is offering incentives to artists and record labels to produce music using a spatial-audio technology that surrounds listeners in sound.

Starting next year, the company plans to give added weighting to streams of songs that are mixed in Dolby Atmos technology, according to people with knowledge of matter. That could mean higher royalty payments for artists who are first to embrace the technology made by Dolby Laboratories Inc., said the people, who asked not to be identified because the change hasn’t been announced.

Listeners wouldn’t necessarily have to play the Atmos version of a song for artists to benefit. It only matters that the song is offered in that format. The new policy will encourage artists and labels to record and mix music with Atmos — including older tracks.

Mixing music in Atmos is broadly affordable, according to the people, making it worthwhile for established artists and labels to participate in the hope of seeing a boost in royalties.

Apple’s audio hardware, including AirPods and the HomePod, a small speaker, support Atmos playback. With more tracks available in spatial audio, consumers might want to purchase additional Apple hardware

Apple declined to comment. Digital Music News reported on the company’s plans in October.

Apple first introduced spatial audio to Apple Music in 2021. Supported by technology from Dolby Atmos, the format attempts to more closely mimic the way music sounds in-person where it can come from various points around the listener’s head.

Amazon Inc.’s Music app also offers Dolby Atmos-supported spatial audio to its users as part of their subscriptions at no extra cost. Spotify Technology SA doesn’t support the format.

TCL, a world leading TV brand, will be the first to implement Dolby Atmos FlexConnect in its 2024 TV lineup.

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is a new feature that seamlessly pairs together a TV’s sound system with accessory wireless speakers to unlock a more extensive and immersive Dolby Atmos sound experience. It then intelligently optimizes the sound for any room layout and speaker setup, transforming any seat into the best seat in the house. We cut our target to $94 from $96 on a P/E of 29.5x, above its three-year historical average due to a more positive outlook, using our next-12-month EPS view of $3.18. We increase our FY 23 EPS estimate to $3.48 from $3.45 and FY 24's to $3.86 from $3.73. DLB posted Q2 revenue of $376M, above consensus by $26M, and non-GAAP EPS of $1.26 beat by $0.29. Revenue outperformance (+12.4% Y/Y) was primarily driven by demand for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision and its imaging patents, as well as strong growth in Products and Services (+18% Y/Y). Not surprisingly, lower PC unit shipments and weakness in the consumer electronic markets depressed sales in its foundational audio technologies. We expect that this will continue to be a challenge for the remainder of FY 23. Despite the continuing pressures in this category, we highlight that strength in Vision, Atmos, and its imaging patents will more than offset the decline in foundational technologies given the pick-up in momentum and demand from its growing range of partners.

We increase our FY 23 EPS forecast to $3.45 from $3.37 and lift FY 24's EPS to $3.73 from $3.46. DLB posted Q1 sales of $335M, above consensus by $28.3M, and non-GAAP EPS of $1.11 beat by $0.32. Results were better than feared (-5% Y/Y) from higher-than-estimated shipments in its broadcast and gaming segments, offset by weakness in PCs, mobile, and other consumer electronics (CE), consistent with trends in the broader market. DLB guided for FY 23 revenue to grow in the low-single digits. While the market environment continues to be uncertain, we see the potential for growth upside as the CE and PC markets improve in H2 FY 23. We lower our '22 EPS forecast to $3.76 from $3.92 and our '23 EPS view to $4.30 from $4.40. DLB posted sales of $352M, a miss of $10.6M, while non-GAAP EPS was $1.01, below consensus of $1.06. Revenue fell 10% Y/Y from lower licensing fees and shipment volumes for its foundational audio technologies in the gaming and consumer electronic markets (negative $6M true-up). Supply chain issues are casting significant uncertainty for the industry, and we expect DLB's licensing performance to be at risk in the short term. This is offset partially by DLB making in-roads in expanding partnerships with major brands to incorporate Dolby Vision and Atmos in more electronic products, and benefitting from higher adoption of these technologies. Guidance for Q2 signals conservative expectations, and DLB is likely to see pressures on both its top and bottom line in FY 22.

The revenue and EPS numbers were within the range but closer to the low end, There was a negative $6M trueup in the quarter that would have made up most of it. They started the call 30 minutes earlier than normal. resulting in only 2 analysts joining Q&A. There also was a new guy named Robert that did the CFO part.

- A few really big and important customer additions recently. Dell and ASUS will be supporting DA and DV in their PCs. Samsung will be adding DA in their TV lineup. More on that later. Mercedes Benz and NIO will be including DA in some car models.

- Added 250M to their buyback auth. bringing it to 506M. They bought back 400K shares in Q1 and ended the Q with 1.26B in cash. In the Q&A they said there will be a meaningful step-up in buybacks in the next few quarters.

- They acquired privately held Millicast to enhance their dolby.io offering, and later said we may see more of that. Millicast customers include NBC, NFL, and Disney, I think in the sports area.

- Though only 2 guys called in, they both asked about DA at Samsung TVs for the first time. Samsung does use DA already in sound bars and phones. They feel this is a natural progression of Samsung adopting Dolby products. The watershed event would be Samsung adopting DV

- DC revenue continues to grow but they didn't provide any metrics, probably cause they weren't asked.

We lower our 12-month target price to $94 from $100, on a P/E of 24x, aligned with its three-year historical average, using our FY 22 (Sep.) EPS estimate. We start our FY 23 EPS estimate at $4.40, and raise FY 22 to $3.92 from $3.91. DLB posted Q4 revenue of $285M, below expectations of $300M, and non-GAAP EPS of $0.58, a beat of $0.02. Revenue was weaker than anticipated due to timing in the payment of a contract, and lower broadcast sales. Looking ahead, we see reasons for optimism from accelerating growth of Dolby Atmos and Vision, as well as improved performance in Dolby Cinema from more people returning to movie theaters. This is offset by supply chain issues which would impact consumer electronics, in turn casting uncertainty in DLB’s foundational audio revenues, potentially a large drag on sales. After a strong year of growth on improving business conditions, we expect DLB’s business to post modest gains in FY 22, and profitability to normalize on returning travel and hiring expenses
