In an interview with ESPN’s news magazine show Outside The Lines, former University of North Carolina basketball star Rashad McCants detailed the program’s don’t ask, don’t tell attitude towards academics, saying that he could have been ineligible for the team’s 2005 national championship run had he not taken “bogus classes” and had improper assistance from tutors, and that he made perfect grades one semester despite not attending classes.

McCants’ allegations are rooted in the same so-called “paper classes” that have been the focus of ongoing investigations at UNC by news organizations and NCAA officials. Students enrolled in these courses, many of them athletes in the football and men’s basketball programs, were not required to actually attend any classes and graded solely on one term paper turned in each semester. Those papers, McCants said, were rarely written by the students themselves.

“For some of the premiere players, we didn’t write papers,” McCants told ESPN. “When it was time to turn in our papers for our paper classes, we would get a call from our tutors, we would all pack up in one big car or two or three cars, carpool over to the tutor’s house, and basically get our papers and go about our business.”

School and athletics administrators at the Chapel Hill campus have been on the defensive ever since details began leaking about fake classes that required little or no attendance and yet handed down passing grades — often times A or B grades — to their athlete enrollees. Investigations into dozens of suspect courses have found that athletes were being placed in classes that were created solely for the benefit of those in jeopardy of losing their academic eligibility; that professors were being listed as the instructors on certain classes without their knowledge; and that course paperwork was being forged.

McCants also told ESPN that while coaches in the program may not have been involved in the academic scandals, they were certainly aware of it and did nothing to correct the problem.

“I think [Head Coach Roy Williams] knew, 100 percent,” said McCants. “Because it’s hard for anybody not to know, about the fact that we’re taking African American studies courses and we dont have to go to class. I think that’s very obvious.”

UNC officials told ESPN that the school is continuing its investigation into widespread allegations of academic fraud, and in many ways the NCAA’s hands are tied in this case until UNC acts first. But McCants’ revelations will again reignite the debate over the concept of “student athletes,” a term favored by the NCAA to argue against the idea of paying top-tier college athletes — and it comes at a bad time for the NCAA, just days before the organization will head to trial in a lawsuit from former athletes alleging federal antitrust violations over compensation tied to broadcast revenues. In a brief filed in court Thursday, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reported, the NCAA indicated that it plans to demonstrate “hard evidence — data –that football and men’s basketball (student-athletes), do, in fact get an education, including statistical analyses showing that these (student-athletes) graduate and achieve success at equal or higher rates than other young people with similar backgrounds.”

The NCAA has stressed the point that college players are students first and receive a proper education, pointing to the organization’s success at raising the graduation rate for athletes. But athletes, their advocates, and other organizations have raised questions about those measures and whether graduation rates are fairly reflective of the education athletes receive, and McCants’ revelations could only bolster those arguments as more details in the UNC academic scandal continue to emerge.

Union's 23-4 year olds were just too much for the Minnesota freshmen.

When I went there, the college had put the program on self-suspension because the kids being admitted to playing there (on the D1 level) were well below the academic standard. They then downgraded to DIII. Obviously that has since changed, and the school is now part of the ECAC (mostly Ivy League schools).

When Minnesota beat their rival North Dakota in the semis with .6 left on the clock, the kids in Minnesota rioted. I'm really curious how many Schenectady townies even follow hockey, let alone riot. As for the kids on campus, this is the first national championship for the school of any sort.... and the school was founded in 1795. I don't think they even know how to react... except drink alot.

I barely saw the masters. 10 year old home seems to have something new break weekly. Sounds like a great game. Wow Union College. Never heard of them. Familiar with the teams from the midwest and of course BC is there a lot. Seems those two areas are always there. East coast and the Michigan Minnesota area whatever that conference is. I almost went to Ferris State to play but in the end could not afford it even on scholarship. We was poor. I think they made frozen four recently

Had Minnesota lost, there was a chance I might have bought his tickets. Now, unless someone has a spare ticket, it's not the sort of event I would pay a scalper. Though my sense is that one could pick up a ticket pretty cheap outside given how BC and ND are now both out, it's not really worth the risk of driving all the way there to find out.

Not sure how many hockey fans out there, but tonight were the semis for the Frozen Four. My alma mater Union College made the final in a thriller over Boston College, then Minnesota just beat their heated rival North Dakota in the most shocking finish I've ever seen. ND had a power play in a 1-1 game that would take the clock down to nine seconds left in the third. Not only could they not score, Minnesota ended up skating right down the ice with teams at full strength and scoring with .6 seconds left on the clock to cinch the win.

UConn men and women have been to a combined 13 national championship games. They are now 13-0 with the women's ninth title an hour ago. I've seen all of them.

Tonight's win also is the third time the winner of both the men's and women's championship is from the same school, with UConn now doing it twice. In case anyone is wondering what Storrs, CT looks like, it's really a cow town. UConn itself is like its own city, but all around it is farmland. There's literally nothing to do save going for a nice jog in the fresh air.

Congrats to UConn!!!! It's amazing to think back and see how close they were in getting knocked out in Round 1 against St. Joe's. Their guard play was second to none and their defense was stifling. Napier's draft stock definitely rose due to the tournament.

My only advise to Kevin Ollie and Napier is to invest the time in a public speaking class. They were painful to listen to after games.

Defense wins championships. Offense determines by what score. You couldn't possibly get through the regular season in one piece if you guarded teams 40 feet from the basket the way UConn did this tournament. If you want to claim this is what makes the regular season meaningless and the tournament a crapshoot, so be it. But, like any sport, the only fair way to crown a champion is square one team off against another in as fair a way as possible. March Madness does that better than any other format. UConn shut down the offenses of Michigan St, Florida, and Kentucky. It's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Louisville was the one school that could stay with the UConn guards. As we say every year, it all comes down to match-ups. Napier and Boatwright made Kentucky start their offense 35 feet from the basket. They tired them out. Napier said after the game how Ollie made them run until they almost passed out in preseason, and how Kentucky seemed gassed and bent over while UConn was still running upright. He also said how they have competitive free-throw shooting contests every practice. Recall UConn set a tournament record for highest free-throw shooting percentage for teams playing at least three games. Kentucky missed more free throws than UConn attempted, but UConn's game plan was to contest every shot in the paint knowing they had the advantage. In sum, their coaching and preparation was flawless down the stretch, with a true leader in Napier to make them believe.

Going into the game I assured myself that UConn's amazing defense that stifled Michigan St and Florida really did make them the favorites. People talk about the 30+ point loss to Louisville. In retrospect, when you live and die by your guard play and defense, once you fall behind in a relatively meaningless regular season game, there's zero incentive to expend the energy it takes to play their style of defense, and the game just opens up on you.

UConn doesn't go on quick runs. They slow the other team down and then play ball control themselves. They build their leads a bucket here and there. When they had that 15 point lead, given Kentucky rarely shoots the three, and given they were young, I really thought UConn might win by 20+. Then Kentucky hit three quick threes in a row and it was only four at the half. UConn had nobody who could score, and Kentucky was playing great defense. But like a heavyweight fight, UConn kept taking body shots but refused to go down. I almost had a heart attack down the stretch, that's how crazy the game was. Wow.

Kentucky hands down has the best young talent of any team, and those kids are now playing as a unit. However, I truly think Ollie/Calhoun will come up with another gameplan to confuse the heck out of them and frustrate them. You remember all the clutch threes to win games, but they rarely shoot the three, which means they have to continually drive through UConn's swarming defense to score. I really can't believe I'm even talking about UConn in the championship game, but here we are. And don't forget the Lady Hsukies as well tonight.

I thought Bucky had it after they caught a break with the late foul on Jackson and his conversion of 2 of 3 FT. (I thought he had traveled before getting fouled). The Harrison shot was clutch even though I thought Dekker should have come out to get a hand in his face but he was shooting from way beyond NBA 3 distance. Maybe he was concerned about fouling.

The Badgers will be a force next season. I was happy to see Bo Ryan get to the Final 4. He was raised a few miles from where I grew up outside Philly. I believe he was head coach of Sun Valley High School varsity basketball in the 70's.
