After almost twenty years on the platform, EFF is logging off of X. This isn’t a decision we made lightly, but it might be overdue. The math hasn’t worked out for a while now.

The Numbers Aren’t Working Out
We posted to Twitter (now known as X) five to ten times a day in 2018. Those tweets garnered somewhere between 50 and 100 million impressions per month. By 2024, our 2,500 X posts generated around 2 million impressions each month. Last year, our 1,500 posts earned roughly 13 million impressions for the entire year. To put it bluntly, an X post today receives less than 3% of the views a single tweet delivered seven years ago.

We Expected More When Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022, EFF was clear about what needed fixing.

Today I want to revisit an old prediction. I got this one wrong. And I think the relevant lesson for 2026 is that I am still not nearly jaded enough.

One of the definitive asymmetries in our modern legal system is that some people pay their lawyers by the year, while the rest of us pay our lawyers by the hour. A good rule of thumb is never underestimate how much the people who pay their lawyers by the year can get away with.

That's less relevant than he thinks. It's going to be a lawyering contest. Bluesky will be in for legal bills they don't need to incur, and the current xitter owners have more than enough resources to defend the suit. It's only a matter of time before "x" is a toxic brand, and it will be associated with "Twitter" for a long time to come. BSKY, IMO, is better off growing their own brand, and let the bird die on its own.

FWIW, twitter.com is still live. It does redirect to the new name, but that could be an argument against abandonment. I know even less about trademark law than patent law. It seems to be even murkier.

There is nothing in the article I cited that implies that it doesn't work for users. But advertisers are even more aware now that their money is not well spent on bots and bogus users. And users aware of that little fiasco are less likely to engage with some entity they aren't sure of.

The X account of Hank Green, a popular YouTuber, says his account is based in Japan; Green told me Sunday that he’d never been to Japan. Bier posted on X that there were “a few rough edges that will be resolved by Tuesday,” referring to potentially incorrect account information. (On some accounts, a note is appended pointing out that the user may be operating X through a proxy connection, such as a VPN, which would produce misleading information.) For now, the notion that there might be false labels could give any bad actor the ability to claim they’ve been mislabeled.

The social media platform continues to have a strained relationship with the media and advertisers, which was on full display this week at Cannes Lions.

On Monday at an Axios event in Cannes, Yaccarino repeatedly dismissed a Wall Street Journal report that X was threatening to sue advertisers if they didn't buy ads on the platform.

The morning after reports surfaced that Elon Musk sent direct messages offering to impregnate women on his social media platform, a software engineer at the company revealed that X's direct messaging feature will be discontinued.

Zach Warunek, a young software engineer at X, responded to a user who asked him to look into a bug they had noticed in their messages. Warunek's answer came as a shock.

"The page will be deleted soon. So, no," he said.

"So no more message requests?" the user asked, believing just the separate folder for messages from unknown accounts would be removed.

"No...like the whole entire DM's will be gone soon," Warunek stated.

Another user chimed in, suggesting the change was related to a Wall Street Journal piece published Tuesday night about Elon Musk.
