All rights reserved.

The subject of this board is Nokia, the company, NOK, the stock, and all things that ARE related to them, including the elements in the markets, the competition in the company's markets as it relates to NOK, and features that matter in analysis of the stock and its trading patterns. Your trading decisions are your own business... and neither they, nor others decisions, are a proper subject of the board. The focus is still not specifically limited to addressing short term traders versus investors... but, the bias is toward information that will support an effort in due diligence that will be more useful for longer term investors than day traders. The focus of the board is one that is intended to illuminate... providing information and sharing it is the point, along with creating an environment in which sharing effort in analysis is made possible. Opinions pro or con are welcome... as long as they are supported by a presentation of useful information and are backed by actual reasoning. Posts that are "pumping" or "cheerleading" or those that are "bashing" are thus off topic. The subject is the company... not your unreasoned opinion of the company. Things that are specifically NOT the subject of this board are: other posters, your own or others posts on other boards that are off topic, your unsubstantiated claims about your own decisions in trading, your personal issues, your opinions of other posters or your interest in their trading, personal attacks, offensive language, etc. Posts on those subjects will be removed as "noise", a pointless waste of others time and an abuse of their goodwill. Repeated violations will result in posters being banned from the list, in order to enable the development of a positive community in which discussion of the proper subject of the list dominates our discussions. On any other subject that is not specifically relevant to a consideration of the proper subject of the board... occasional social banter and off topic discussion is acceptable... as long as it is positive in nature, supports the development of a positive community, with positive interaction between participants, and if it does not focus on personal attacks, etc.

SI - NOK... without the BS

[sense] Wonder if my new chart analysis posted today will surprise anyone ? The bollies widening out with price tracking down along the lower bolly pretty well kills the hope it might trade sideways like it did in Sept to November last year.

Another month and we should see it setting up for testing $3 again, and with the 50 MA rolling over pointing lower... making the test one of whether or not the "death cross" will happen, or not...

There is the beginnings of a positive pinch forming on the daily charts, now, suggesting resistance and the possibility of a nice (and trade-able) pinch chart forming in the next few weeks as it drifts lower... but, the weekly chart doesn't confirm that, showing, instead, a strong correlation between ADX and MACD with both rolling over and pointing lower... only with MACD looking like its lagging the ADX trend a little, even as MACD rolled over and crossed the indicator line this week to confirm the downturn... That suggests the weekly chart may be forming a bit of a negative pinch pattern... which, on this chart, should mean you expect to see a contested chart and prolongation of the decline rather than an acceleration... but, still too early to make that call, and the MACD could well diverge at a faster pace in the next two or three weeks, as it did coming out of the MACD rollovers in Feb and May of 2011, and April of 2012...

NOK has been in a three year long decline...

The move above the middle bands on the weekly charts in November appears to have slowed the rate of decline, in the same way the similar move did that in June of 2010 to January of 2011... while moving off the lower bolly limit to test the limits of the upper bolly before continuing lower...

Biggest questions the charts leave open... are the timing...

An accelerated pattern might see a far more rapid decline occurring (as has occurred here previously in similar chart situations) probably with the trading in the next two or three weeks providing the key in what you should expect to see happening next. And, then, with a more accelerated chart developing, you'd also expect to see that pattern be paired with another more dynamic pattern coming out of a test of the bottom.

An less accelerated pattern in trading over the next few weeks... might presage the development of a longer, grinding, decline... paired with a less dynamic pattern in recovery...

And, of course, even considering the element of inertia in the trade, nothing in the charts should be expected to trump the longer term fundamental considerations, rather than integrate sentiment with them...

Don't ignore the 6 year monthly chart... which shows Jan 2009 to Apr 2010 being a decent proxy for Apr 2012 to present...

Compare Williams % R to the other metrics in each of the chart periods... ?

I don't see much evidence in charts that NOK can avoid a move lower now, or avoid a test of prior lows...

I also don't see much suggesting it will violate the prior lows rather than test them... while the charts now say NOK is still way closer to its bounce lower off an interim peak, now, than it is close to making a bottom...

Given the current chart dynamic, I think the support at $3 likely will not hold... but, can't call a range for the bottom yet, without seeing what happens over the next month...

[sense] Coming soon... cell phones that can tell you are ugly, that can tell you are an ...

Coming soon... cell phones that can tell you are ugly, that can tell you are an asshole, that can tell that you smell bad, and then kick you in the ass:

IBM: Computers Will See, Hear, Taste, Smell and Touch in 5 Years
mashable.com

[Lahcim Leinad] Yup. It has a big sensor for a cell phone, but its still a much smaller sensor than the one that is in the 10mp Canon 40D that CPI uses in a lot of studios. So the Nokia sensor is great compared to other cell phones, but the 40D will win in picture quality hands down, even if you are blowing it up to poster size. Smaller sensors need more light and introduce more noise into the image. I suspect as time goes on they will figure out how to improve the small sensors to where they can compete with the current SLR sensors... but we are definitely not there yet.

Makes sense about as much as saying...

Yeah the V12 Jaguar engine is an impressive feat. It has a big engine for a sports car, but its still a much smaller engine than the one that is in the semis used by commercial haulers. So the V12 engine is great compared to other cars, but the semi will win in hauling capability hands down, even if you are towing up to two extra wagons. Smaller engines have less power and towing ability, so they can't haul the semi's load. I suspect as time goes on they will figure out how to improve sports car engines to where they can compete with the current semis... but we are definitely not there yet.

[sense] A post from another list where I'm over-seeing the demise of CPIC, a dying photo...

A post from another list where I'm over-seeing the demise of CPIC, a dying photo studio / tech era dinosaur... whose RAID servers for storage... have less capacity than I have on my laptop.

Thought you might enjoy fencing with it...

"Yeah the 41mp sensor nokia has is an impressive feat. How many people out there buy an HD 1080p tv and then feed an SD signal from an old satellite tv or cable box to it, only to marvel at how great the picture is. Or worse yet, they feed a 4:3 ratio image to it and stretch it to 16:9 *shudder*.

[sense] I've similarly avoided any discussion of Apple here on SI I can imagine the blo...

I've similarly avoided any discussion of Apple here on SI

I can imagine the bloodletting from all the wrists that must be being slashed on those boards, now that the bloom is off that rose...

[Lahcim Leinad] No doubt! Thus far... they've not been well received.. or, received at all ? There actually aren't any, yet, to be received ?

And, the reality of what's been shown as "concept"... is that it's not wowing anyone...

With the iPhone 5 also not really wowing anyone... it appears there's not really that much of a reason for consumers to engage with either company's products...

But, Apple being vulnerable in its excess conservatism isn't saying Nokia is in any position to benefit ?

I agree with the link Lacim posted discussing the CONSUMER... noting that it is utility and service to the end user that is the real issue... with more of a focus on what the device can do for you, than there is on the technical aspects of its comparitive performance...

That the companies marketing efforts address that more, now... doesn't mean that the devices are doing a good job in better meeting needs...

I think it's a bigger issue than Apple and Nokia... although it does look like Apple and Microsoft becoming more like each other over time in every element other than the difference in perception enabled by their branding...

There appears to be a deficit in innovation occurring... with the capability of the engineering on the hardware side vastly outstripping the pace of innovation in any truly valuable new "consumer utility" at this point...

For Nokia, in particular, I think they're going to have to provide a reason for consumers to brave the "issues" in the market to choose them instead of a competitor...

I don't think that's happening at the high end...

It's possible still that they've got more of an advantage with the lower end products... which the pundits in the market tends to ignore as "not the bleeding edge"...

I've not thought that all the way through, yet...

Have discussed it a couple of time in context of "price wars" coming to this market...

But, it does look to me like we're past the point where the early adopters have all made their choices... they'll upgrade to newer products, choosing those that do both comport with their brand image requirements, and wow them with new utility they have to have... but, real market growth appears it is likely to come from those who've not yet adopted the newer tech... who likely have different drivers in making the decision to get a more complex and more expensive device...

And, for that... the winners are more likely to be those devices that don't make things hard... that are intuitive enough that theres not really even a learning curve... so that "turn it on and it works" is the level of user involvement required in enabling FULL function... basically the same issues as MSFT and AAPL have warred over in the desktop space for decades, now...

I don't see that issue as eclipsing the consumer interest in having the devices be MORE USEFUL...

I do think the industry, by kowtowing to the carriers, has been losing sight of what the primary utility is...

And, that issue is roundly ignored by pretty much everyone...

Microsoft looks to me to be better positioned than anyone else to do something that will work...

But, the issue is Microsoft being Microsoft... in everything... as in their approach to software design

They have a potentially useful collection of parts...

I have little faith that they'll find a way to put them together and make them work... this decade...

I don't see a Jobs like leader... no Gates, or Woz, for that matter...

Nokia... has layered over all of its pre-existing problems by also positioning itself to inherit all of the self delusions and self limits that MSFT sustains... which doesn't appear to me it will enable them to succeed well enough to re-establish much relevance in the market...

Elop appears to have focused considerable effort in "fixing" the things in the institution that weren't broken... in order to better align NOK with MSFT's view of the world, while gradually surrendering more over time of what were NOK's primary strengths...

In my view... there's no shortage of potential... I do understand why many others think they HAVE to be able to make this work well enough to restore NOK at least to being something that looks survivable...

But, that there is obviously a brass ring hanging right there waiting to be grasped... doesn't mean anyone is doing what's necessary to do to enable grasping it... ?

[greenbeemer] Nok is not selling "crap". There are too many interests lined up to make it succeed. QCOM, once a bitter enemy and the reason behind Nok's failure in the US imho, is now backing it strongly. MSFT too for obvious reasons. Telcos as well, needing a fractured marketplace instead of a duopoly. That's a lot of heavyweights with a vested interest. "

The issue is... none of those "heavyweights" have any ability that matters to FORCE consumers to buy crap that doesn't work... or stuff that doesn't appeal to them... for whatever reason. So, even if the only reason is that they shat themselves with the release, and focused all kinds of effort on lining up the "systemic support"... but still forgot to make a phone that anyone will actually WANT... ???

It's not all NOK's fault... because the industry is pretty screwed up... with imbalance in the market imposed by carriers... who don't have a reason I can see to have any impact at all on which phones consumers buy...

[sense] It's not a big deal... However, the ATIV S, providing Samsung can ship it in a reasonable time frame (before December?), is possibly the most exciting of the three, with the largest screen, decent speaker and excellent camera, plus battery flexibility/replacement and memory expansion - the best of all worlds for the mass market?
Looking ahead to the Windows Phone 8 generation for real excitement

[Lahcim Leinad] Nokia: a product or a service company? | NEXT Berlin

[Road Walker] Nokia Siemens Looking to Divest BSS Unit as U.S. Telecos Spending Seen Flat in F...

Nokia Siemens Looking to Divest BSS Unit as U.S. Telecos Spending Seen Flat in FY12 (NOK) (SI)6:39 AM ET, 09/11/2012 - Street Insider
Nokia Siemens -- the joint venture between Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Siemens AG (NYSE: SI) -- may be in discussions with several parties over the sale of its business support systems (BSS) unit, according to CEO Rajeev Suri said Tuesday in India.

Suri has said that about six divestment have already taken place, all being non-core to mobile broadband or profitability not meeting expectations.

Nokia Siemens' restructuring is on track, noted Suri, with the effort about six weeks ahead of schedule.

Overall, Suri thinks spending by U.S. telecoms will be flat in 2012, with some rebound in investments during the second-half of the year.

Shares of Nokia and Siemens are both indicated higher ahead of the opening bell Tuesday.

[Lahcim Leinad] Nokia 808 PureView getting Mix Radio support with Belle Feature Pack 2 update | ...

Nokia 808 PureView getting Mix Radio support with Belle Feature Pack 2 update | UnleashthePhones

[Lahcim Leinad] [youtube video]

[Tumbleweed] Avoiding Android where Samsung is taking all the share? At least with WP8 they have a shot at being the top dog in that ecosystem. With Android they'll always be a step behind Samsung and now Moto, owned by Google.

It's not a pleasant choice; two things have to go right. WP8 has to sell well, and Nokia has to win against the others starting at zero. But I think it's better than trying to climb out of the Android hole from zero market share.
