WHEN Chinese entrepreneur Zhou forked over 1.1 million yuan (S$203,892) in late 2024 for BYD’s crown jewel, the 3.5-tonne Yangwang U8 SUV, he bought what he thought was the pinnacle of Chinese engineering. Among the draws: a sophisticated system that would spot dangers on the road and practically let the car drive itself.

The feature, branded as God’s Eye in 2025, appears to fall short on its celestial promise. During a clear afternoon in southwestern China, the 38-year-old was cruising when the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 93 kilometres per hour (kph), well above the 60 kph speed limit, and veered onto a roadside median. On another occasion, he said that the U8 abruptly jerked into an adjacent lane by performing a “ghost” steering manoeuvre, nearly colliding with oncoming traffic.

“I took a leap of faith in the technologies and the pride of our local manufacturing,” said Zhou, who has been in a yearlong dialogue with the company seeking a resolution for recurring malfunctions, including navigation signal loss and unintended acceleration. He requested to be identified only by his surname for privacy reasons.

BYD outsold Tesla in Europe for the second consecutive month in February, registering 17,954 vehicles compared to Tesla’s 17,664, and the year-to-date gap is becoming a chasm.

The data is particularly damning for Tesla because February 2025 was one of its weakest months in years, with factories shut down for the Model Y Juniper changeover. The fact that Tesla can barely grow from that low bar a year later tells you everything about the state of the brand in Europe.

The numbers

According to registration data, BYD surged 162% year-over-year in Europe’s broader market (EU + EFTA + UK), climbing from just 6,844 registrations in February 2025 to 17,954 in February 2026. Tesla managed only an 11.8% increase, from 15,794 to 17,664.

In the EU specifically, the picture is even worse for Tesla. BYD registered 15,438 vehicles (+185% YoY), grabbing 1.8% market share, up from 0.6% a year ago. Tesla registered 13,740 units (+29.1% YoY) for a 1.6% EU market share, up from just 1.2%.

Year-to-date, the divergence is stark. BYD has accumulated 36,069 registrations through February, up 162.7% year-over-year. Tesla sits at 25,753 — essentially flat with a 0.9% increase. BYD now leads Tesla by more than 10,000 units across the first two months of 2026.

Context matters: Tesla’s “growth” is from rock bottom

Tesla’s 11.8% year-over-year increase in February sounds positive in isolation, but it collapses under scrutiny. In early 2025, Tesla had shut down production lines at Gigafactory Berlin, Gigafactory Shanghai, and its other facilities to retool for the refreshed Model Y “Juniper.” That factory changeover crushed Tesla’s Q1 2025 deliveries across Europe, making it one of the weakest comparison periods imaginable.

A year later, with the refreshed Model Y in full production and widely available, Tesla managed to add fewer than 2,000 units over that dismal baseline. For context, Tesla’s full 2025 European data was a total bloodbath — registrations plunged 27.8% for the year, with catastrophic declines in Germany (-48%), Sweden (-67%), and Belgium (-53%).

The year-to-date figure is the real tell. At 25,753 units through February, Tesla is essentially flat compared to the same period last year, a period that was already severely depressed by the factory shutdowns. That’s not recovery. That’s stagnation at a much lower level.

As we reported in January, Tesla entered 2026 unable to find a bottom in Europe. January’s data showed a 17% crash even as the broader BEV market surged 14%. February’s modest uptick doesn’t change the trajectory.

BYD’s European expansion accelerates

BYD’s 162% growth is not coming from a low base anymore. The Chinese automaker registered 18,242 vehicles in January alone and followed it with nearly 18,000 in February. That’s consistent, high-volume performance, not a one-month spike.

The company has been aggressively expanding its European dealer network and now offers a competitive lineup of BEVs and plug-in hybrids across multiple price segments. It’s worth noting that BYD’s European figures include PHEVs while Tesla sells exclusively battery-electric vehicles, but even on a BEV-only basis, BYD’s growth trajectory dwarfs Tesla’s.

Meanwhile, the broader European EV market continues to grow without Tesla’s help. According to ACEA data, BEV market share in the EU reached 18.8% in the January-February period, up from 15.2% a year earlier. France (+38.5%) and Germany (+26.3%) posted strong BEV growth. Tesla is not participating in this expansion, it’s actively dragging down the growth rate.

Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, on Friday said his administration will impose a 6.1% tariff on EVs from China, allowing up to 49,000 units into the North American country. This marks a dramatic turnaround from the 100% tariffs imposed on the Asian giant by Justin Trudeau, Canada’s former prime minister, in 2024.

The arrangement suggests that Canada — which counts the U.S. as its largest trading partner, followed by China — may be seeking other strategic alignments, even as diplomatic relations with Washington have come under strain recently. In May 2024, the U.S., under former President Joe Biden, imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese EV imports, with the duty coming into effect that same year.

Chinese EV Makers Make Inroads Abroad

The development comes even as Chinese EV makers — despite facing a saturated market and price wars back home — have continued to boost their delivery numbers, especially by penetrating European markets where American EV giant Tesla TSLA +0.36% ? is struggling to remain on its feet.

In 2025, BYD sold 2.2 million battery-electric vehicles globally, beating Tesla to become the leader in that category for the first time. In comparison, Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, marking a 9% year-over-year decline.

BYD has unveiled fully autonomous Level 4 self-parking across its vehicle lineup, powered by its advanced multi-sensor "God's Eye" system that's used by more than 1 million cars across China. "The company is so confident in the technology that it announced that it will cover any damages to your car or any other vehicle if things go wrong," adds Fast Company. "This means if anything happens, the owner won't have to file a claim and have their premiums go up." From the report:

BYD's confidence stems from a sophisticated sensor architecture. The God's Eye system deploys multiple sensing technologies working in concert, unlike Tesla's problematic camera-only approach. Even the entry-level God's Eye C variant -- one of three autonomous driving levels included in most affordable models -- includes 12 cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors with 1-centimeter accuracy. The mid-tier God's Eye B adds a lidar sensor, while the premium God's Eye A variant features three lidar sensors for maximum precision.

The system's parking accuracy allows the car to get within 0.8 inches of other objects, enabled by multiple redundant sensors that create a three-dimensional map. This allows the vehicle a deep understanding of its environment. This multi-sensor approach allows the system to detect obstacles. It can even recognize hanging objects over the roof line of the car.

The company reports that more than 1 million vehicles now carry the God's Eye system, an impressive deployment scale that starts with the most inexpensive models, like the $9,550 BYD Seagull, and go all the way to the $236,000 BYD Yangwang U9, a hypercar that can detect potholes on the road and jump over them. Yes. If the God's Eye detects an obstacle on the road, it will literally jump over it.

This pivot, spearheaded by Elon Musk’s 2024 decision to scrap a $25,000 EV, reflects a prescient recognition that the EV market is hurtling toward commoditization.
By betting on autonomy, Tesla aims to escape the “margin shit show” predicted to engulf the industry by 2028, when overcapacity and price wars could wipe out traditional carmakers.
The implications are stark. China’s EV juggernaut, while formidable, is built on shaky foundations, risking a self-inflicted wound as subsidies foster overproduction.
BYD’s price cuts may boost sales temporarily—Citi estimates a 30-40% surge—but they erode profitability and signal deeper structural flaws.
Tesla, though not invincible, is uniquely positioned to weather the storm, leveraging its software and AI prowess to redefine mobility.
As China’s EVs flood global markets, the fallout will ripple through Europe, Japan, and beyond, potentially triggering a political and economic reckoning.
By 2030, while BYD grapples with a saturated, low-margin market, Tesla’s autonomous gamble could propel it to unprecedented heights, proving that in the EV race, the winner isn’t the cheapest, but the smartest.

Chinese electric car maker BYD’s doubled its profits to $1.3 billion in the first quarter as it continues to surge past its key rival, Elon Musk’s Tesla.

The Shenzhen-based firm — whose annual revenue leapfrogged past Tesla’s last month to surpass the $100 billion mark — said quarterly revenue rose 36% to 170.36 billion yuan, or about $23.51 billion, for China’s top-selling car brand.

By comparison, Tesla — which has struggled from tougher competition in China, an aging vehicle lineup and public backlash from Musk’s work with the Department of Government Efficiency — earlier this week reported its quarterly profit plunged 71% to $409 million as revenue dropped 9% to $19.34 billion.

BYD’s total sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose 60% to nearly 1 million in the first quarter. Tesla vehicle shipments — a close proxy for sales — sank 13% to 336,681 over the same period.

The company has said it wants to export 800,000 vehicles to international markets this year as part of a projected 5.5-million-unit sales.

More about the BYD’s “God’s Eye” driving assistance systemBYD officials revealed that the “God’s Eye” ADAS system has three intelligent driving classifications. The entry-level system is called “God’s Eye C”. It relies on a three-camera cluster sitting behind the windshield. As the entry-level tier ADAS system, the “God’s Eye C” will be adopted by cars under the BYD brand. This perception system will be powered by the DiPilot 100 system with a peak computing power of 100 TOPS.

Other hardware elements of the “God’s Eye C” include 12 cameras, 5 mm-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic radars. Those 12 cameras consist of 3 front-view cameras, 5 panoramic cameras, and 4 surround-view cameras. Five mm-wave radars provide 360-degree non-dead angle perception, the front radar has a detection distance of 300 meters. The accuracy of the 12 ultrasonic radar sensors is 1 cm, and the parking accuracy is 2 cm

The brand’s second ADAS system is called “God’s Eye B”. It provides a LiDAR sensor to enhance the perception of cars’ driving assistance system. It will power Denza cars, and some flagship vehicles under the BYD brand. This combination is powered by a DiPilot 300 system with a computing power of 300 TOPS.

The top-tier BYD’s autopilot system is called “God’s Eye A”. It adopts three LiDARs powered by the DiPilot 600 system with the computing power of 600 TOPS. This system will power vehicles under BYD’s luxury brand Yangwang.

In addition, BYD’s Xuanji architecture will be connected to the Deepseek R1 large model to improve the AI ??capabilities of the vehicle and the cloud. The “God’s Eye A” and “God’s Eye B” systems support the NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) function in cities and highways. The “God’s Eye C” system currently supports only high-speed NOA. However, the entry-level system is expected to support the city NOA function in the long term via OTA update.

As icing on the cake, the BYD Chairman showed a video of the Yangwang U9 supercar equipped with the God’s Eye A system driving on a racing track while being unmanned.

BYD unveils 5-minute EV charge breakthrough: Is Tesla in trouble?

BYD just flipped the script on EV charging. The Chinese automaker introduced a new fast-charging system that can add 249 miles of range in just five minutes, a claim that—if it holds up—could shake up the electric vehicle market.

Tesla has long led the charge in fast charging, but BYD is coming for the crown with what it describes as the Super e-Platform, capable of delivering up to 1,000 kW of peak charging power. The new BYD battery system brings EV charging up to speed with gas refueling, cutting wait times to just minutes.

The company is rolling out this technology in its upcoming Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, with pre-orders already open in China. But it’s not stopping there. BYD plans to install over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China to support its growing fleet, a move that signals its intent to challenge Tesla’s dominance beyond just vehicle sales.

“BYD’s new battery and charging system was capable of providing around 400 kilometers (249 miles) of range in 5 minutes in tests on its new Han L sedan,” Bloomberg reported.

BYD ( BYDDF) may be planning to roll out highly autonomous electric vehicles for the mass market. The Chinese EV stock soared near a buy point on Thursday. Tesla ( TSLA) slid further below key levels.

At an event next week, BYD is set to unveil an intelligent driving system — called "God's Eye" — that will take highly advanced and safer driving features mainstream, according to various news reports. It could also fuel the next phase of the Tesla archrival's rapid growth.

BYD leads global EV sales race, leaving Tesla and BMW in the dust

Electric vehicle adoption is accelerating globally, with a record 1.7 million sales in September alone. New analysis reveals that an EV was sold every 2.83 seconds worldwide between January and September 2024.However, one company stands out from the crowd: Chinese automotive giant BYD.

“BYD has obtained 538 new patent authorizations this year, an increase of 216.47% over the same period last year,” he quoted (using machine translation).

I initially couldn’t believe that was the total so far in 2025. I thought maybe it was old news from the end of 2024, or perhaps something was lost in translation.

But, no, this was just for 2025 — the first two weeks of 2025 (almost). “That works out to roughly 40 per calendar day awarded, 50 per working day so far this year,” our reader, Larry Evans, wrote. Indeed, 50 patents per working day. Insane.

Of course, Larry has known and been pointing out for several months that BYD’s innovation is at another level. In particular in a comment thread comparing BYD and Tesla, Larry wrote, “BYD invests more in R&D and employs by far the most R&D engineers of any automaker. BYD has more clean tech IP. BYD is more vertically integrated. BYD makes all of its own batteries and supplies most of the materials within them. BYD has a larger business beyond automotive with a larger electronics, ESS, and solar presence (although these are lower-margin segments). BYD has a much larger commercial vehicle presence. And BYD is selling most of their vehicles below the $30,000 price point that Elon has been promising for over a decade but has never delivered upon.”

There’s a lot more of interest in that extended comment that I turned into a standalone CleanTechnica article, but here’s probably the most important line when it comes to this patent news, so I’ll put it in bold as well: “Not only do they have 110,000+ R&D engineers, but they work in a comprehensive digital twin system where even a minor change to a component almost instantly updates every other aspect, from aerodynamic, mechanical, and electrical loads to manufacturing tooling. Because they make almost all of the vehicle, the integration with the digital twin is seamless and lets them develop and optimize vehicles and the systems within them in a fraction of the time. If you are actually aware of everything BYD is doing, it is almost impossible not to be impressed.”

Even better, in a separate article a couple months later, in December 2024, Larry wrote: “Apple has increasingly shifted to a BYD partnership across China, Vietnam, and India. BYD currently has roughly 100,000 employees and 10,000 engineers dedicated to the Apple supply chain — roughly 1/9th of their total employees and 1/12th of their engineers. This isn’t just assembly, but also developing much of the technology within Apple devices and producing a large share of the components. If you own a recent Apple device, much of it is likely from BYD.” Wait, why are we talking about Apple consumer devices now? Because BYD is taking a similar approach in the car industry. It’s out-innovating everyone while rapidly scaling up.

“When people realize that China now educates as many degreed engineers in a little over a year as the entire US engineering workforce, many get scared. BYD’s R&D engineering workforce alone is easily more than all US-based automakers combined.”

By the way, even by BYD’s standards, 2025 is looking to be a blockbuster year. Those 538 new patents noted at the top, they’re a 216.47% increase year over year from new BYD patents in early 2024. “Combined with the company’s 2024 interim financial data, the company invested 19.621 billion yuan in research and development in the first half of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 41.82%.” That’s $2.7 billion USD.

BYD also has a new car that can jump over a pothole. Yes, the Yangwang U9 costs over $200,000. But the point is that BYD is out there breaking new ground — at the top end of the auto market as well as the bottom end. And now there are spy shots out for another surely super-high-performance … supercar.

Years ago, Charlie Munger got Warren Buffett to buy a lot of BYD shares via Berkshire Hathaway when Munger was deeply impressed by BYD Founder, CEO, and Chairman Wang Chuanfu. They broke their rules for investing in this case because Munger was so impressed with Wang Chuanfu and convinced Buffett to make an exception on this one. It sure seems like a case where Munger’s 6th sense for investing really kicked in and he made a brilliant choice.
