When I sell it uis usually with at least a month to expiration.

I don't really have that many open positions now. A couple of short puts and 4 or 5 covered calls.

Most of my spec comes from buying pre ipo securities like SPCX and GROQ. GROQ worked out well but SPCX will have a lockup period.

`When I worked in brokerage I used to argue with Compliance that selling cash covered puts was less risky than outright buying shares.

I learned that rule the hard way......

[robert b furman] Hi Hammer, Good to see you posting your sound views. Early execution often happens if there is a pending dividend or the TV is low. You have to consider that the other side of the trade may have been short the stock or hedged and they had to cover or were locking in a profit.

LITE is a great stock for options with that level of volatility.

Yep earnings releases can pump or dump a stock. Some folks try to avoid binary situations like that, but again you will get better premiums in advance of earnings.

Around earnings, you could hedge with an OTM long put. I know you said you don't want to do that but it may be a special situation and then go back to weekly shorts after that....

[Elroy] I don't mind owning more LITE (I own a few core shares). So if I get put, I'm fine with that.
I was surprised when the Friday short put got put to me Friday morning, even though the option was well in the money. LITE is super volatile (look at it today, up $70 already), so I was caught off guard. My thoughts here is from now on if the put is over $100 in the money on Thursday, I'll roll it one week forward then rather than wait until Friday and risk getting put a day early.

I don't want to pay for long put hedges. I prerfer to just get put, then start selling covered calls. The idea is entirely to catch the (very high) weekly premiums, from short puts or (if I get put) from short covered calls.

I think LITE is generally going higher for the next few years, with lots of volatility. So worst case (I get put) doesn't bother me. Look at the last week's problem (I got put LITE at $1,000 on Friday before the open). LITE dipped to $820 yesterday, and is already $970 today. Amazing, actually.

My other issue is I'd rather not have exposure over earnings releases, if possible. That's where the story can change, for example - "Our growth outlook is so strong, we are increasing Cap Ex by 1,000% to increase capacities. This increase will cause losses over the next 12 months, but much larger profits after that....". I want to avoid something unexpected like that.

[Thehammer] Rule number 1 - never sell puts on stocks you do not want to own (unless you con...

Rule number 1 - never sell puts on stocks you do not want to own (unless you consider yourself a trader / speculator)

I have literally sold thousands of put and many of them have gone into the money.

Very seldom have I actually had the stock put to me, even when they went deep ITM. I typically rolled.

Very early on I got greedy and was in some tight tough spots and managed to extract myself. That is my reason for rule number 1.

Another option (no pun intended) is to hedge the positions with long puts.

[Elroy] LITE is a hot high growth high valuation photonics technology stock selling comp...

LITE is a hot high growth high valuation photonics technology stock selling components into AI data centers. Go go growth stock.

The share price is highly volatile, and there are weekly equity options traded on the stock.

I've been selling weekly put options for 4 weeks now. If the weekly puts that I've sold expire out of the money on FridayI let them expire, and do the same thing (sell another one week LITE put) the following week.

If the weekly LITE puts that I've sold are in the money on Friday I roll them forward (buy back the today expiring in the money short LITE put, sell the same thing expiring a week later) and pocket the premium.

It has been very lucrative so far. I'm in week 5 of doing this weekly put shorting now.

Last week on Thursday when LITE was about $880 a next day (Friday) LITE $1,000 put that I was short was exercised on me (I got put 100 shares of LITE at $1,000). This surprised me as I didn't think such a volatile underlying position would be exercised early even though it was deep in the money. So I bought a big chunk of LITE for $1,000, and immediately sold this week LITE $1,000 calls, pocketing the premium. For this new unwanted long LITE position I plan to continue to sell LITE $1,000 one week covered calls, until they expire in the money and I sell the unwanted actual LITE position at the same price that it got put to me.

So the way this trade goes awful is LITE turns around and heads South, I get put all the weekly deep in the money puts that I am short, and then LITE never rises back to the price where I got put. In other words I buy the stock at a high price, and it never reaches that price again. A risk I'm willing to take.

I'm currently short this Friday LITE $945 and $970 puts, and short a this Friday $1,000 LITE call against the 100 shares of LITE I got put last week at $1,000 when that put was exercised on me a day early.

LITE looks to be $970 pre-market, up perhaps on the STM increased AI datacenter guidance pre-market.

Anyways, if there's any way to do this rolling short puts on a volatile but rising stock idea that is better than what I'm doing (my friends call my trading strategy "winging it"....) I'd love to hear suggestions.

[sm1th] Sold CAVA Aug 85 puts for 7.25 today. They did shrink the credit spreads on some stocks where nothing would be realized that earlier were even easy to phish in the beginning of my campaign like XOM as an example but quite a few still remained untouched. The change also was so abrupt it happened at 1 PM CST right on June 5 after my CRWV plunder where they immediately put a stop to it on that particular stock but then why is it is still available to the other parties in other stocks and not available to me? I was also a super client who paid around 14K in commissions over that time period.

I have tried my other account with another broker where trust me I am nowhere as proficient with the other platform with no luck. So am I Jesse Livermore being banned from the bucket shop?

For me it didn't matter what kind of contract you used one subject to section 1256 or ordinary taxation I didn't really care but certainly favored the one with the short term tax advantages.

When I started doing this no one but me was using this tactic on typically zero bid options. 4 months later it became very commonplace.

I can say making money was so easy analyzing a stock and taking the risks involved in investing was a total waste of time. Now it is back to the grind in an uncertain macro market. Yuck!

Maybe you can try it and see if it works for you. Print the page that gives the entire list of options that expire weekly and thank me in private if it works for you.

[S. maltophilia] Maybe direct some trades through a different broker and compare. I don't know if section 1256 exchanges are as algorithm dependent as the usual equity and index option markets, but I don't think a human market maker would recognize your orders coming from another broker.

[FIFO_kid2] I might as well be open about it since I believe I am being targeted/blacklisted...

I might as well be open about it since I believe I am being targeted/blacklisted from getting fair access in the options market and expose the scam going on. Since last Thursday (June 5) I have been unable to get any contract between the bid/ask. Even ones that incur plenty of risk but other parties are getting access to them.

My suggestion is to phish WAY out of the money credit spreads (it really doesn't matter if they are a put or call) on less popular stocks with weekly option contracts to see if these zero risk options are going through. I was doing them for about 4 months albeit at a lower return than they are getting last week and spent over 10 thousand in commissions alone targeting these over that time period and it is obvious I am now not part of the preferential club.

BOIL/KOLD are my favorite because they are section 1256 contracts but pretty much any weekly contract with a wide spread is game. Someone is still obviously getting preferential treatment because I see trading markers of them still happening in some volume. People are getting over a 30% return in a day on zero delta aka zero risk options on a Friday. Loan sharking even isn't as profitable as this.

[sm1th] Rolled SWK May 65 calls to Jun 70's. Moving around a lot in the past month.

[TheNoBoB] Option expirations fall into one of three cycles; first month of the quarter, mi...

Option expirations fall into one of three cycles; first month of the quarter, middle month, or last month. Since SIMO has active Sep and Dec expirations, we can guess that they're on the last month cycle. Normally, the two front-most months are available (Aug and Sep, in the case of SIMO), as well as the next two cycle months (Dec, Mar). The Jan's were originally LEAPS (Jan '26 is also available).

The October expiration will list once the August rolls off.

[Elroy] Does anyone know what is the policy for initial trading in out months of "semi-i...

Does anyone know what is the policy for initial trading in out months of "semi-illiquid" options.

I'm curioous about SIMO. Eventually SIMO trades options in every month, but currently there are Aug '24, Sep '24 and then it skips Oct and Nov, and then has Dec 2024, Jan 2025, skips Feb '25, and then has Mar 2025 already trading.

At some point in the near future Oct 2024 will begin trading. Does anyone know the policy of when that will begin? What is the policy for beginning trading in the "less active" months?

[sm1th] I decided to let the MGA puts be assigned, pays close to 4%

[THornsby] AFAIC, selling options really low priced naked options is like picking up pennie...

AFAIC, selling options really low priced naked options is like picking up pennies in front of a steamroller. You ...

If NGL is $6.02, your short dated $2.50 call has $3.52 of intrinsic value. You could place a STC order for a better price but there is no incentive for anyone to give you full value. While waiting for a better fill on the STC order, XYZ could change in price and intrinsic value could be lost. Take the win.

For stocks whose options are liquid (not NGL), there are several things you can look at if the B-A spread is very wide:

-Collar your long ITM call

-Execute a spread where you option is one leg and the other OTM and inexpensive. As soon as your filled, close the new leg. This strategy is particularly useful at the end of year when you have zero bid options that you want to close for tax purposes. Market makers are more likely to fill such orders because they're capturing more B-A spread (two legs).

These option adjustments are viable if the options are liquid with narrow spreads. With all of these extra transactions, in the long run, most of the time it makes more sense to (1) sell to close your long call if you can get within a few cents of intrinsic value or (2) If you have the buying power, do a Discount Arbitrage, avoiding the B-A haircut. For your long ITM call, short the stock to lock in the intrinsic value and then exercise immediately. Short the stock first to avoid leg out risk. If you have a large number of calls, stagger the transactions.

[THornsby] Even if you knew if the person who put that trade on was a buyer or a seller, th...

Even if you knew if the person who put that trade on was a buyer or a seller, there's no way to know if he was bullish or bearish.

For example, if he bought the calls outright, he's bullish. However, if he shorted the stock while buying those calls, he'd be bearish.

Or perhaps this position is part of a spread, so he could be bullish or bearish?

Or maybe the trader bought the calls and another trader was selling puts, and the market maker put on a conversion, laying off his own risk.

AFAIC, there's no way to determine the future direction of the underlying.

[sm1th] I just sold Apr MGA 50puts for $0.55. Hope it goes back up, but with 8 trading days, you're taking a chance. I feel more comfortable selling at market with a solid bid like that and possible price improvement. Too many times over the years I've seen too many people lose serious money holding out for a few pennies. Especially if you don't want K-1 complications, you dont want to go through exotic hedging contortions.

The only other suggestion is maybe a calendar spread to July if you're really confident in the stock.

[Elroy] You seem to be saying....hit the option bid? I've got nine days. My thoughts are if NGL is $6, and the April $2.50 call is $3.40 and $3.60, put in an offer at $3.55, and wait for a day (one out of the next nine) where the underlying NGL moves up through $6.05.

I'm definitely not slamming a bid. I'm going to (I think) make an offer, and wait to get paid.

My question is any suggestion on how to do it to maximize the sale price? Hitting the bid is the way to close out the trade with no concern for price.

Yes, I've done well with this trade, but that's still no reason to sell lower than absolutely necessary. I've got enough bad trades to offset that I can't be giving away return.

-----

One possibility is to go short the number of units which match the call, and then exercise the call and tell the broker to offset the short position. In this case, do I never actually own units?

I'm trying to maximize return while not also mucking up my K-1. I have long term NGL units in my account, I'd prefer it if this trade doesn't affect them at all.....

[S. maltophilia] Might as well let them go at market. There's a bid for 163 contacts @3.40 (big enough for you?<g>). You're just as vulnerable to the stock giving up it's 1/8 gain on the day as you are to getting a bum fill. Presumably you've done well being long that call. Might as well lock it in. You may well get 3.45 or 3.50

A stop won't work because, if it's triggered, you're likely to get considerably less than 3.40.

You're fortunate the market isn't something like 1.80 - 3.60.

Take the money and run.

[Elroy] Does anyone suggest any special technique to sell deep in the money short dated ...

Does anyone suggest any special technique to sell deep in the money short dated options?

I've got lots of April NGL $2.50 calls. Regardless of how long you hold them, the gain loss is 40% short term and 60% long term. And the strangest thing is they mark to market on Dec 31st, forcing you to realize your gain or loss each tax year even if you didn't close the position.

Anyways, recently I've sold some Oct $7.50 NGL puts, and I'm just waiting for the unit price to go higher. Not a super complicated bet, but a way to be more long without investing my capital.

Lets see. I bought this Friday CCL $15.50 calls yesterday. CCL reports this morning.
