As a result, the performance of oil tanker companies is closely tied to the supply and demand dynamics of the oil market. In recent years, the oil tanker industry has been facing a challenging market due to a supply glut and weak demand. However, there are several reasons to believe that oil tanker stock prices are poised to rise. One of the main reasons why oil tanker stock prices are likely to rise is the increasing demand for oil. The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the global oil market as lockdowns and travel restrictions led to a significant drop in demand for oil. However, as the global economy continues to recover, there is a growing demand for oil. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global oil demand is expected to rebound strongly in 2022, growing by 3.2 million barrels per day (bpd) to reach 100.6 million bpd. This is a significant increase from the 8.7 million bpd decline in demand in 2020. The increasing demand for oil is positive news for oil tanker companies, as it means more oil will need to be transported across oceans, resulting in increased demand for tanker services. Another factor contributing to the potential rise in oil tanker stock prices is the supply-side dynamics of the oil market. In recent years, there has been a significant oversupply of oil due to a combination of factors such as the shale oil revolution in the US, OPEC's decision to maintain high levels of production, and the slowdown in demand due to the pandemic. However, there are signs that the oversupply is starting to ease. OPEC and its allies have been implementing production cuts to balance the market, which has led to a reduction in the global oil supply. In addition, the shale oil industry in the US has been impacted by lower prices and reduced investment, which has led to a decline in production. These factors are expected to lead to a tighter oil market in the coming years, which should lead to increased demand for tanker services. The increasing demand for cleaner energy sources is also expected to play a role in the rise of oil tanker stock prices. As governments and companies around the world transition to cleaner energy sources, there will be a shift away from fossil fuels such as oil. However, this transition is likely to take many years, and in the meantime, there will still be significant demand for oil. In addition, the transition to cleaner energy sources will require significant investments in infrastructure, which will require large amounts of oil to be transported across oceans. This presents an opportunity for oil tanker companies to benefit from the increased demand for tanker services. Finally, there are several regulatory changes that are expected to impact the oil tanker industry positively. For example, the International Ma...

SI - Shipping - Oil & Gas Tankers, Dry cargo, LNG

[nicewatch] Seriously? Authorities say the Arctic route could cut typical voyage times by around a third.

President Lee Jae Myung has made Arctic shipping a priority, and officials hope to launch regular services by 2030.

But the project risks friction with Western allies hoping to keep Russia isolated during its war in Ukraine. The route runs along Russia's Arctic coast, and Seoul consulted with Moscow about the journey, including whether the ship needed ?help to tackle any problems, such as getting stuck in ice.

On its outbound voyage, the vessel passed through Arctic waters and reached its first European port, Felixstowe in Britain, before calling at Rotterdam and Gdansk and returning home via the Arctic.

The trial voyage also highlighted the challenges ahead. Before the departure, PanStar told Reuters it was seeking about 1,300 twenty-foot equivalent units of cargo, but the ship left with 737 TEU of cargo plus empty containers.

Industry experts have said the route's value will depend on reliable schedules, the costs of slowing to avoid ice, special insurance premiums and extra fuel use.

msn.com

[nicewatch] Dude, seriously? (Photo: World Shipping Council)

Global container shipping volumes reached a record 17.46 million twenty-foot equivalent units in August, while freight pricing climbed to its highest level in more than two years, according to Container Trades Statistics.

August liftings surpassed the previous record set in July and increased 3.7% from August 2025. Through the first eight months of 2026, global volumes were up 4.7% year over year, CTS said in its Oct. 8 report.

The figures show continued growth in container trade despite elevated fuel prices, disruption in the Arabian Gulf, Panama Canal constraints and changing tariff conditions. August volumes were 7.2% higher than in the same month of 2024 and 12.9% above August 2023 levels.

Freight pricing rises alongside volumes

CTS’ Global Price Index rose two points from July to 117 in August, its highest reading since July 2024, when Red Sea shipping disruption was putting pressure on rates. The index was approximately 50% above its January level and 44% higher than in August 2025.

CTS said the increase reflected pricing pressures that had developed since late February, as disruptions to key shipping routes affect available capacity and operating costs as vessels are rerouted.

North American imports recover

North American container imports were up 2% through August compared with the same period last year, extending a gradual recovery that began in May after negative year-to-date growth earlier in 2026.

Increased cargo flows from Asia supported the recovery, with trans-Pacific trade up 5% year-to-date. CTS described that performance as a notable improvement from the trade’s earlier weakness amid tariff uncertainty and severe typhoon-related congestion at originating ports.

Sub-Saharan Africa posted the strongest percentage growth in imports, with volumes up 13% through August. Growth came from across its major origin markets, with the Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East the notable exceptions.

The combined Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East region was the only region to record declining imports, down 5% year to date. It also was the only region with lower exports, which fell 10%, representing just under 1 million fewer TEUs than in the first eight months of 2025.

Far East drives export growth

Asia exports increased 8% year to date, adding approximately 6.3 million TEUs compared with the same period of 2025. Every destination region recorded growth in cargo originating in the Far East, with Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Central America leading in percentage terms.

European exports, meanwhile, returned to roughly flat year-to-date growth after declines earlier in the year. CTS attributed the improvement to stable or increasing cargo flows across most destination regions.

Despite the new volume record, CTS cautioned slowing month-to-month growth could signal a moderation in demand, making growth and elevated rates a key issue heading into the final quarter of 2026.

freightwaves.com

[nicewatch] Agreed but you forgot to include WW1! -gulp-

[Selectric II] This doesn't hold a candle to the perils faced by the merchant fleet and merchan...

This doesn't hold a candle to the perils faced by the merchant fleet and merchant mariners during WWII, carrying arms and materials from North America to Europe and Russia.

U.S. merchant mariners had the highest casualty rate of any U.S. military service. The cost of getting it out is eye-watering: up to $40 million for a multiday trip.

For Gulf oil producers, it is worth it. Leaving the oil stranded is still economically worse than taking on the freight cost and selling oil at thinner margins.

So producers inside the Gulf have turned to hiring very large crude carriers, known as VLCCs, to complete a perilous journey known as a “shuttle run.” Carriers enter the Persian Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz, load at ports there, exit from the strait, then transfer the oil to another vessel waiting just outside of the waterway.

These are the new economics of the strait, where a wartime gold rush has pushed producers to swallow record freight costs just to keep crude moving; shipowners are reaping some of the best returns the industry has seen in decades; and the sailors who make the dangerous crossing are being paid like never before.

Those financial rewards come with substantial risks. After several days of calm, seven ships have been hit since Sept. 28, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations, which is affiliated with the Royal Navy. A few of those tankers have been identified as shuttle tankers, according to maritime-security firms.

Shuttle runs weren’t necessary before the war. But when Tehran started hitting commercial vessels in the strait, buyers in Asia and elsewhere became reluctant to send their own ships to pick up oil from inside the Gulf. Now oil producers are shelling out between $30 million and $40 million for a round trip in and out of Hormuz—or $15 to $20 a barrel excluding insurance, according to shipbrokers.

“For many shipowners, the current market is generating revenues at levels rarely seen in the industry’s recent history,” said Dimitris Maniatis, founder and chief executive of maritime-risk company Marisks.

Ferrying oil directly from the Persian Gulf to global markets is also more expensive than ever, contributing to the appeal of shuttle runs. The cost of hiring an oil supertanker to sail from the Persian Gulf to China topped $1.2 million a day in late September. On the eve of the war, that cost was about $231,400 a day, according to maritime data provider Clarksons Research. In early January, it cost less than $40,000 a day.

The shuttle-run bonanza is trickling down to individual sailors. Those willing to perform the war-zone trips—many from India, the Philippines and China—are being lured with payouts worth two or three times their typical monthly salary. One Shandong-based ship-staffing company is even offering as much as $25,000 for a round trip as reward, according to seafarers and recruitment advertisements seen by The Wall Street Journal. For oilers and cadets, the $25,000 could represent more than a year of wages.

An executive at the company said it is currently using the $25,000 offer to recruit oilers and ordinary seamen for a VLCC that will go into the Persian Gulf on a rolling basis.

“Given the millions being made at the moment, that’s absolutely nothing to the shipowners,” said Richard Matthews, director of consulting and research at shipbroker E.A. Gibson.

Expanding shuttle fleet

The demand for shuttle runs exploded last month after drone attacks shut Saudi Arabia’s bypass East-West pipeline. To keep exporting oil, the kingdom’s flagship oil company Aramco has joined its regional peers in employing shuttle tankers.

The core fleet of tankers doing these shuttle runs—those that have done four or more runs of unloading Gulf-loaded cargoes to ship-to-ship transfer zones off the ports of Fujairah, Sohar and Shinas—has grown from 30 vessels at the end of August to 39 now, according to Claire Jungman, director of maritime risk and intelligence at ship-tracker Vortexa. Saudi Arabia’s share of shuttle tankers is rising fast, Jungman said.

The trade is currently dominated by a few shipowners including South Korea’s Sinokor and Greek billionaire George Prokopiou’s Dynacom. However, smaller shipowners including owners of older vessels that used to ferry Venezuelan and Russian oil have joined the trade, said shipbrokers. If these vessels manage to get insurance and become a total loss, shipowners can claim back the full value of the ship, which may be a better economic proposition than eventually having to scrap the vessels, they said.

Getting insured can prove difficult.

“When we see these ships coming into the insurance market, we assess the operator’s capability. Have they done this trade before? Who’s going to run the ship? Do they have connections in the market to repair these ships if they are hit?” said Sundeep Khera, head of marine at Beazley, a global insurer.

Even with the partial restart of the East-West pipeline, Saudi Arabia will likely still rely on shuttle runs in the near future, said Anoop Singh, the head of global shipping research at commodity broker Oil Brokerage.

Gradually, more crude will go through the pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. But Saudi Arabia will still need to ship those barrels north up to the Suez Canal, meaning a much longer journey than through Hormuz.

“Saudi Arabia cannot find enough tankers if it wants to push three million barrels a day of crude exports from Yanbu up north to the Suez and then around Africa into markets in East Asia,” Singh said. He reckons that ultimately, two-thirds of the Saudi oil flows will still go through Hormuz.

Dangerous journey

Behind the high reward are high—and real—risks. In the past two weeks alone, nine commercial vessels were attacked near the strait, resulting in two seafarer injuries and one death, according to the International Maritime Organization and the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Center, which is affiliated with the Royal Navy.

Two seafarers on two different VLCCs shared their recent experience with the Journal. One of them, the first mate on a shuttle tanker, said he had been in and out of Hormuz twice in the past month. Both trips were at night—with the windows shut and lights turned off.

During each transit, his vessel lost GPS signal for hours and navigated using old-school methods such as using radar signals to calculate the angle and distance relative to islands and headlands to determine the vessel’s position.

He said half of the crew quit after completing just one round trip, but the ship management company had no problem replacing them after promising extra pay. He was paid three times his monthly salary for the days transiting in the conflict zone, he said.

Another crew member on a separate VLCC said he knew that Iran could hit the vessel with drones, but he didn’t anticipate the risk of being hit by missiles.

He was paid double his daily wages.

wsj.com

[Paul Senior] Great catch and score.
