Kalvin waves don't cause immediate damage like, say, a tsunami, as the rise in ocean levels they cause is less than half a metre, but they do bring unusually warm water north.

cbc.ca
BC has already had one Kalvin wave this summer, and another is on the way. That is probably a contributor to an unusual find just made in Haida Gwaii, the discovery of the corpse of a swordfish, usually found in tropical waters. Now we are all relived because the daughter of on those friends, following in her mother's footsteps, after several days of silence, managed to get out a message that she had survived the flash flood the other day by being out on a hike at a higher elevation.

Climate change strikes again. A mostly dry lightning storm went through first and started about 30 new fires. But cooler conditions and even some rain in its wake have since calmed things down enough that several thousand properties were taken off evacuation orders. However, they are still on evacuation alert so the returnees will have to leave very quickly if conditions worsen again, which judging the forecast -- more heat and no precip -- could well happen.

Meanwhile, the smoke has returned to Vancouver with the change in weather patterns. And the ongoing heat and drought has pushed both the Danube and Rhine rivers to record low water levels, causing power plants to shut down and threatening many economies, as these are two of the most heavily used shipping routes in the world.

au.news.yahoo.com

Meanwhile, the Atlantic hurricane season may have been quiet so far, as is normal for an El Nino year, but the Pacific has been making up for it, with a string of typhoons hitting China this summer. Within ONE HOUR it spread to 1000 hectares, and in TWO HOURS to 5000 hectares. Then evacuation orders went out for the entire population of Summerland and then parts of Peachland, just to the north, 12000 people in total (pushing the evacuated population in BC to over 22000 people).

By the next morning it was almost 100 sq km, and is now almost 170 sq km and still out of control. The reason for this growth is that under the impact of global warming this area is these days much warmer than it was even 20 years ago. Add in a years-long drought and you have the conditions for a dangerous conflagration. It is a tribute to the people managing this that only one person has died, that due more to medical reasons.

Many sporting events and festivals, including the world renowned Kelowna Triathlon, have had to be cancelled.

cbc.ca

There are still over 100 fires burning in BC, about half out of control. Without the effects of global warming, the fire the arsonist set would not have exploded the way it did and would have been contained easily, and likewise for the other two fires near Spokane.

I will repeat, no matter what starts a fire, the effects of global warming greatly increase the chances it will get out of control and cause more damage than it would have 50 years ago.

You seem to be arguing that because a fire was started by an arsonist, global warming has had no effect on fire behaviour. It brought together two fire fighters with over 40 years experience apiece, one from near Spokane, the other from Vernon, near the latest big fire in BC.

The point both of them wanted to make was that during their careers they have fought many many fires, but that they have never seen fires behave like this before. The worst one right now in BC is at the north end of Okanagan Lake. That area has been in extreme drought, so when a fire ignited late Friday it blew up to over 10 sq km in one day and has continued to grow, in the process taking out hundreds of homes.

We are closing in on 10k people evacuated in BC, with over 130 wild fires burning, more than 50 of them out of control and six designated as 'major'

cbc.ca

As for myself, I am now confined indoors due to the smoke. This is a real shame since I am the OG of ulty in BC, having started the first team in the province in 1982.

And things are even worse across the border in Eastern Washington, where over 60k people have been evacuated and hundreds of buildings destroyed in the three large fires around Spokane.

newsweek.com

Now I am waiting for Trump to threaten tariffs on Washington State for producing so much smoke spreading into other states and north into Canada.

[LoneClone] The real issue is how, no matter how a fire ignites, the droughts and extreme he...

The real issue is how, no matter how a fire ignites, the droughts and extreme heat that are getting more and more common, cause them to be so much more dangerous than they used to be.

Surely you can recognize that?

LC

[johnlw] 30 years of data reveals how people ignite most Calif. wildfires “It’s really i...

30 years of data reveals how people ignite most Calif. wildfires

“It’s really important that we have access to this kind of open, public, transparent data,” said Kelly Pohl, associate director at Headwaters Economics, in an interview with SFGATE on Friday.

[oldmoguy] Wernt bout spelling.

[LoneClone] Turning to stuff that matters, hot dry windy weather has ramped up a number of f...

Turning to stuff that matters, hot dry windy weather has ramped up a number of fires across BC, particularly those threatening Clinton and 70 Mile House. That is assuming you still have power, because a great deal of infrastructure including thousands of power poles, has been consumed by fire.

I am also keeping a weather eye on the heat dome punishing the US from southern California to Colorado, generating temperatures at least 10C above normal. The good news is that the evacuation alert for the town of Kimberley has been rescinded, but many other evacuation alerts and orders remain in force. Conditions will get worse this week with heat and wind, so it is very helpful that firefighters from Mexico and various parts of Canada are arriving to join the fray.

Of course, this pales in comparison to what is happening in France and Spain, where more than 300k people have had to be evacuated due to wild fires. The big question now is whether the fire can be stopped before it enters the city of Bordeaux.

bbc.com

And the effects on sports continue to grow. The final stage of the Tour de France had to be shortened, because the police and military personnel that were supposed to have been guarding the route had to be reassigned to firefighting. And the BC Summer Games got lucky, with a wind shift meaning most of the outdoor events were held after all.

As well, typhoon Ragasa, the latest of a string of cyclones to hit Taiwan and China the year, has caused the evacuation of more than 2 million people.

cnn.com

LC

[LoneClone] France, Spain, and Italy are being ravaged by fire, with several hundred thousan...

France, Spain, and Italy are being ravaged by fire, with several hundred thousand people evacuated and hundreds dead.

ndtv.com

Meanwhile, here in BC, there are more evacuations, with the village of Clinton joining Boston Bar and several smaller villages, and there are air quality warnings in many parts of BC.. For the last two weeks most of them have had to evacuate due to two nearby fires.
