Too many Christians are transforming Christianity into a vertical faith, one that focuses on your personal relationship with God at the expense of the horizontal relationship you have with your neighbors.

To understand what I mean, let’s turn to a much darker time in American history, when Christianity and slavery existed side-by-side in the American South. In 1970, Wendell Berry published “ The Hidden Wound,” a book-length essay about the profound damage that racism had inflicted on us all.

....All too many American evangelicals are disconnected from that history. We belong to churches that measure their existence in months or years, not centuries or millenniums. Our oldest denominations have existed for only the tiniest fraction of time compared with the Catholic Church.

That lack of perspective ends up exaggerating the importance of politics. It narrows our frame of reference and elevates the temporal over the eternal. It leads to absurd declarations, such as Trump’s vow this Easter to make America “more religious than it has ever been before.”

And when you believe the success of your religion depends on the success of any politician, it’s only a matter of time before politics becomes your religion. That means that too many Christians will evaluate even the pope through a partisan political lens.

And that’s exactly what happened last week, as people found the new pope’s social media feeds and began devouring his old posts. Is the new pope MAGA? Is he woke? How does he fit into the American culture war?

The headline of a story from The Federalist, a MAGA publication, said it all — “Read the New Pope’s Far-Left Takes on Immigration, Climate, Covid and Race Relations.”

And what is far left about the new pope? It turns out that he was opposed to family separation for migrants crossing the border during Trump’s first term, and disagreed with Vice President JD....

But if you watch the opening ceremony, or look at the unedited photos, you will quickly realise that it doesn't really depict The Last Supper painting.

For one thing - the "table" wasn't even a table at all. Rather, it was the catwalk on which models showed off the latest fashion by France's most promising young designers. In addition, the scene had dozens of performers, not just 13 men representing Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples - including women, at least one child, and at least one drag queen.

The show also featured the Greek God Dionysus painted blue, and covered in flowers and fruit.

According to the guidance from Ryan Walters, the Republican state superintendent, every teacher must be given “a physical copy of the Bible, the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Ten Commandments.” It breaks down how instructors should teach the Bible by subject — including its historical context, literary significance and influences on arts and music — and by grade levels from five to 12.

The guidance comes about a month after Mr. Walters, a conservative Christian and former high school history teacher, directed all state K-12 schools to teach the Bible. The mandate was seen an extraordinary move to push the limits of religious instruction in public schools, and reflects a growing view among conservatives that American democracy should be explicitly rooted in Christian values.
