Trump issues NATO ultimatum to reopen Strait of Hormuz 'within days'

US President told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that NATO countries must work on a solution to resolve the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz immediately. Allies had originally committed to helping reopen the strait once hostilities had come to an end.

US President Donald Trump has said allies must find a solution within days to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Any operation would likely involve deploying military vessels and personnel to the region, despite initial reluctance from European allies.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has informed key member states of Trump’s demands following talks in Washington on Thursday.

Rutte is in the US capital for a three-day visit, which included meetings at the White House with Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. The conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, was high on the agenda.

Ahead of the visit, Trump reiterated threats to reconsider US participation in NATO, criticising European allies for rejecting his calls to contribute assets to secure the strait, which has been largely closed to international shipping by Iran.

Following the talks, Rutte said Trump was “absolutely disappointed” over the issue.

“It was a very frank, very open discussion, but also a discussion between two good friends,” Rutte said of the private meeting held without media access.

On Thursday, Rutte reportedly contacted European capitals from Washington to relay Trump’s insistence that allies produce a plan to reopen the strait.

A NATO spokesperson confirmed to Euronews: “The Secretary General is in contact with allies about his discussions in Washington. It’s clear that the United States expects concrete commitments and action to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump also criticised allies on social media, saying “none of these people, including our own, very disappointing NATO, understood anything unless they have pressure placed upon them.”

Last week, more than 40 countries joined a coalition aimed at securing free passage through the strait, a critical shipping route for global energy supplies, once the most intense phase of the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran ends.

Governments including the UK, Germany, Finland, Norway, France and Spain had initially said they would not deploy troops or naval forces, arguing they were not responsible for an offensive operation in Iran.

However, Trump has insisted he wants a plan within days, regardless of ongoing instability.

A source close to the discussions told Euronews it would be in the interest of NATO countries to respond positively, or risk wider consequences for collective security.

“What this all means for NATO is effectively up to the nations of NATO,” the source said. “Will they act, and if they do, will they act constructively towards their and the Alliance’s collective security and meet their obligations?”

NATO allies are now holding accelerated discussions on how to reopen the strait in the most practical and efficient way. Sources said Trump has told Rutte a plan must be developed “within days rather than weeks”.

“They are going to have to come up with some form of physical presence in the region,” the source said.

“As we know, this piece of geography is water-based, so this will likely involve some form of naval vessels and personnel to operate them,” they added.

Allies could also potentially rely on intelligence support and demining operations, sources told Euronews.

Then, at 5:28, Trump’s social media account posted: “The Wall Street Journal, one of the worst and most inaccurate ‘Editorial Boards’ in the World, stated that I ‘declared premature victory in Iran.’ Actually, it is a Victory, and there’s nothing ‘premature’ about it! Because of me, IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON and, very quickly, you’ll see Oil start flowing, with or without the help of Iran and, to me, it makes no difference, either way. The Wall Street Journal will, as usual, live to eat their words. They are always quick to criticize, but never to admit when they’re wrong, which is most of the time! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Warsh had been set to appear before the Senate Banking Committee on April 16. That won’t happen, but the hearing is still expected soon, the person said, requesting anonymity as the details have not been made public by the committee.

The committee’s rules require that it give a week’s notice before the hearing is held, and the panel first needs to collect paperwork from the nominee, including financial disclosures. The Banking Committee has yet to receive Warsh’s paperwork, the report added.

The committee has not formally noticed the hearing. The deadline for doing so was Thursday. Punchbowl earlier reported the delay to Warsh’s hearing. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's term is slated to end in May.

Warsh is married to Estée Lauder ( EL) cosmetics heir Jane Lauder, whose net worth is estimated at $1.9 billion, according to Forbes.

Underlining Iran’s continued control of the Strait of Hormuz, a Botswana-flagged liquified natural gas tanker called the Nidi attempted to travel out of the Persian Gulf via a route ordered by the Revolutionary Guard but suddenly turned around and headed back early Friday, ship-tracking data has shown.

On Thursday, four tankers and three bulk carriers crossed through the Strait of Hormuz, bringing the total number of ships passing through since the ceasefire to at least 12, according to the data firm Kpler.

However, other ships not transmitting their locations may have passed through as well. The strait typically carries a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flows and sees around 140 ships a day pass through it during peace time.

Only handfuls of vessels have transited the critical Strait of Hormuz since Washington and Tehran announced a two-week pause in fighting, dampening hopes for a swift resolution to one of the worst global energy disruptions in history.

Five vessels crossed the strait on Wednesday, down from 11 the previous day, and seven transited on Thursday, according to data from market intelligence firm Kpler.

According to Lloyd’s List Intelligence, more than 600 vessels, including 325 tankers, are still stranded in the Gulf due to the continued blockage of the strait.

I rather like the fact that many Republican's who're out of office, but had been respected in the party, are calling out Trump.

Unfortunately, at this point simply pulling out of Iran isn't, or shouldn't be an option. Worst case we should get back to at least where we were in Obama's agreement, which Trump cancelled. Clearly Iran is weakened now, but if we back out now, you know their emphasis will b e on a few nuclear weapons and just a few missiles that can deliver them, possibly intercontinentally. We know they can build missiles by the thousands that may not be that accurate, but a few bombs and long range missiles is what they could place the emphasis on. I know we might be able to stop them, but even one getting through could begin WW3.

We didn't know they had the range to reach Diego Garcia, while they missed, they did have the range. If they can go that far, it doesn't take that much more to go further. Frankly I don't know that a rouge country, or company, won't sell them what's needed to do it.

I hope we can get International support in policing an agreement with Iran, essentially like Obama had done. If they attempt to charge for using the straight of Hormuz we, or allies, need to neutralize their ability to do it. I'm not unsure that Israel couldn't do it themselves if we continued to arm them, but that too isn't where the world should be. I wish there was a simple solution, but there isn't, and an International effort is needed, not just the US and Israel vs. Iran. The biggest problem is that should have been established well before any attack, had it been, perhaps no attack would have been necessary.
