I've checked a couple of bird identifier websites, but no match.

Southern New Jersey is the place. Bird was sitting profile to me on deck railing for a minute or two. Left before I could get a photo. A little smaller than a robin. Tail not as long. Dark gray feathers all over except directly under him around the leg area was white. Beak thin, straight, medium length, pale yellow in color. Might have had a black eye ring. Junco is closest but the bill is wrong.

Any ideas anyone?

[Carolyn] I would not be surprised. I'm pretty sure the same bird landed again on the railing about 25 minutes ago, but I couldn't get to the camera in time. I got a good look as it flew, and it had a distinctive white middle section in its wings. The sound though is still that loud chep chep without changing like you'd expect a mockingbird to do.

The only thing is if what I saw is not the same one from the other day then I'm wrong. I need a good shot at it. I imagine it will be back.

[Carolyn] Probably!

[Stan] Fortunately it's pretty noisy, so I'll know when it's here. It looks more like a vireo, but longer. I hope it lands again. I have my other camera ready to go. I'll post it here if I get it.

[Carolyn] A shrike or a cedar waxwing

[Stan] I just saw a bird on my back railing that I can't quite identify. My iPhone pic is blurry on closeup.

From profile, it's the size of a Mockingbird. It has a light-to-medium gray head and neck and lower body, dark gray wing feathers, striking white outer wing feather, and white outer tail feathers a thin black mask, a thin, pointy bill,. It lets out a sharp, fairly loud, "Chep" but no other sound. Its loudness is what caught my attention here inside. When I first saw it, I thought it was a Mockingbird but its tail stuck out straight behind, never rising. However, a Mockingbird joined it a few feet away on the railing. My Peterson field guide doesn't show what I saw.

Anyone have a guess?

[SIer formerly known as Joe B.] Check out what Hurricane Sandy did to the pier pictured in the post I'm replying...

Check out what Hurricane Sandy did to the pier pictured in the post I'm replying to....

[SIer formerly known as Joe B.] [graphic]

[SIer formerly known as Joe B.] [graphic] My dog and I passed some interesting birds on our walk today. There's usually a pair of them in this spot.
