SpaceX Makes Big Play to Become a Wireless Carrier

Elon Musk’s space company is buying spectrum licenses to help build a mobile network to compete with telecom giants

SpaceX spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida this month.

SpaceX reached a deal to buy cellular spectrum licenses from investment firm Grain Management, its biggest move yet into a wireless market dominated by traditional telecom companies.

The Elon Musk-led space company will pay about $8 billion in cash for the assets, according to people familiar with the matter. Grain and SpaceX had no comment on the value of the transaction.

The U.S. licenses, which are in the 800-megahertz band, are tailored for wireless service from cellphone towers rather than satellites. The spectrum could serve SpaceX’s stated ambition of moving its Starlink satellite service beyond broadband into the wireless market to compete with the likes of AT&T and Verizon.

U.S. cellphone carrier stocks sank on the news. Shares in AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all fell more than 6% in post-close trading. SpaceX shares climbed about 3% to $165.10 after hours.

The Federal Communications Commission earlier this week approved SpaceX’s bid to launch up to 15,000 satellites dedicated to mobile service.

The company said that upon FCC approval of the spectrum purchase, it will combine the growing constellation with “an advanced terrestrial deployment” to connect devices. It said its new spectrum will help cover places satellite links can’t reach, including inside buildings.

SpaceX has offered basic wireless connections in remote areas through a T-Mobile partnership for more than a year. But it has been upgrading its Starlink Mobile network with newer satellites capable of handling more data.

Starlink still needs some terrestrial infrastructure, such as cell towers or rooftop equipment, to use the spectrum for mobile coverage, said Roger Entner, founder of telecom research firm Recon Analytics, whose clients include AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile US.

Two months ago, SpaceX executives floated the idea of using small cells rather than traditional cell towers to support a mobile network. Building a system with traditional towers would likely cost billions of dollars to provide basic coverage, analysts have said.

SpaceX made an early commitment to the wireless market last year, reaching a roughly $17 billion cash-and-stock deal to obtain satellite-based spectrum rights from EchoStar. The purchase gave Musk’s company a platform for beaming data to cellphones from space using its own reserved frequencies rather than through airwaves licensed from partner T-Mobile.

EchoStar later agreed to sell some ground-based cellular licenses to SpaceX for $2.6 billion. The purchase hinted at SpaceX’s budding interest in wireless service, though the spectrum alone wasn’t enough to launch a full-fledged cellphone network.

AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile earlier this year teamed up to extend their service to remote areas over satellite links, a move widely viewed as a defensive tactic against potential SpaceX encroachment.

It would likely be too expensive and time-consuming for SpaceX to build a mobile network on its own. But the major wireless carriers have to hope one of their rivals doesn’t sell out.

Ever since T-Mobile and Sprint merged in 2020, the U.S. wireless-communications market has operated as a comfortable oligopoly. But lately, investors have worried that Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans to disrupt what’s been a predictable market for telecommunications services.

SpaceX’s Starlink business has so far been a niche provider to rural areas. But the company’s initial-public-offering prospectus in May revealed that Starlink Mobile has ambitions to massively penetrate suburban and urban markets too -- with the goal of providing better connectivity than what can be offered by cell towers on the ground.

Building that sort of network is far easier said than done, requiring a lot of time and a lot of spectrum. And it assumes SpaceX would even want to do the intensive buying and building work itself; its other option would be to strike a deal that allows it to buy network capacity from one of the current major players. Such an agreement would likely spur an industry-wide price war and fierce competition for customers -- the main reason why the biggest three operators have vowed not to ink this sort of partnership.

Executives at the established wireless providers have generally shrugged off the Starlink threat. SpaceX’s direct-to-cell constellation “will never be an effective competitor to a mobile network,” T-Mobile US CFO Peter Osvaldik told MarketWatch earlier this week.

“It’s basically not possible because of physics,” Verizon Communications CEO Dan Schulman added on his company’s Friday earnings call. “It’s very difficult for satellite providers to provide a service even close to what we can provide with our broadband services.”

Still, it’s clear that investors in recent months have felt unsettled. AT&T shares have fallen 8% since the time SpaceX publicly filed its IPO paperwork in May, while shares of Verizon are off 8% in the same span and T-Mobile’s stock is down 10%. SpaceX isn’t the only thorn in the sides of those wireless companies, which also must deal with higher interest rates and fierce pricing competition between carriers. But Morningstar analysts said they suspect that the SpaceX threat has been a major source of the valuation pressure.

Telecoms aren’t scared

There’s a reason the telecommunications business is dominated by a few major players. Effectively competing is expensive, requiring persistent participation in spectrum auctions and constant investments in network competitiveness.

SpaceX’s route to achieving its grand connectivity vision for Starlink is riddled with multibillion-dollar problems and would require decades’ worth of catching up, according to MoffettNathanson analysts. Starlink’s satellite spectrum capacity doesn’t come close to matching ground connectivity speed, their research recently highlighted.

Even after paying $19.6 billion for 65 MHz of spectrum from EchoStar last fall, SpaceX still meaningfully lags behind the big three carriers’ low- and midband capabilities, which MoffettNathanson estimates are still 10 times more than SpaceX’s.

Low-band spectrum travels far and goes through walls easily, but offers slower connectivity. Midband is faster and carries more data, but does not travel as far or go through thick walls as well. Wireless providers need balanced portfolios in order to serve customer needs effectively.

SpaceX would need to spend billions at Federal Communications Commission auctions to acquire spectrum and establish the bands needed for a reliable connection, according to MoffettNathanson. T-Mobile CFO Osvaldik doubts that SpaceX has a credible path to low-band spectrum, since upcoming auctions are focused on mid- and higher-frequency bands.

Operating a satellite-only network, meanwhile, would come with geographic and signal constraints. The signal from a satellite in low-Earth orbit is about 48,400 times weaker than the signal from a ground tower located one mile away, before accounting for crucial obstacles like ceilings or walls, MoffettNathanson’s research indicated.

These limitations are why large carriers have actually been willing to partner with Starlink or rival AST SpaceMobile, viewing their direct-to-device satellite mobile services as a niche complement to existing terrestrial coverage. T-Mobile partnered with Starlink in February 2025 to offer these capabilities to its subscribers, but the company says it’s seen little usage outside of national parks.

This summer, T-Mobile’s satellite usage represented just 0.0003% of total network usage, according to Osvaldik, who said it would drop even further as colder seasons progressed.

“We just fundamentally understand they’ll never be a substitute product,” he said.

A quicker way to gain stature in the wireless market would be to merge with one of the big three providers. But experts say that’s a less plausible option, as any such combination would face regulatory and financial hurdles.

One big caveat

Moffett Nathanson analysts said that each of the three major wireless companies have to trust that their rivals won’t agree to let Starlink partner with them as a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO.

That refers to a model whereby companies can rent network capacity from established providers and sell wireless plans under their own brands. It’s how budget carriers like Consumer Cellular can pass cost savings on to their customers by foregoing large-scale infrastructure buildouts.

If Space X were to strike an agreement with one of the major wireless networks, it would suddenly be able to offer customers terrestrial coverage and overcome the major roadblock keeping it from competing effectively in the U.S. wireless market.

For that reason, the three big providers seem to have an unspoken agreement to prevent disruption: Never give Starlink an MVNO deal. Executives at each of those companies clearly indicated in May that they had no intention of granting Starlink this sort of arrangement.

Verizon has already learned the pain of letting cable competitors rent out network capacity, after it signed MVNO agreements with Comcast and Charter Communications in 2011. Those companies then went on to launch their own wireless brands, undercutting Verizon on pricing and gaining market share.

SpaceX’s position creates a classic prisoner’s dilemma among the big carriers, noted Julie Zhu, a senior research associate at MoffettNathanson. She told MarketWatch that if a mobile-network operator were to crack and sign an MVNO agreement with SpaceX, the entire industry would lose out from letting an aggressive competitor come in and dramatically lower the bar on pricing. The partnering company would lose too, Zhu noted -- just perhaps not quite as much.

Telecommunications investors likely wouldn’t take kindly to a SpaceX MVNO partnership, further lowering the odds of this sort of deal, Moffett Nathanson said.

While the big three providers have signaled that they don’t want to do business with SpaceX in this capacity, that won’t necessarily stop Musk’s company from trying to force their hands.

One way SpaceX could attempt this is by using its “deep pockets” to make expensive bids at FCC spectrum auctions, according to a Morningstar report. The company could get aggressive at these auctions by not only collecting spectrum as a potential bargaining chip, but also by bidding up prices and raising the cost of business for its rivals, Zhu noted.

Whether that strategy would pay off is still an open question. It’s tough to say if SpaceX will amass enough spectrum that it becomes attractive to one of the big network carriers as they consider their future bandwidth needs.

But regardless of SpaceX’s viability as a mobile competitor, wireless investors may still worry about when the next shoe will drop with a notoriously volatile company.

Wolfe Research analyst Peter Supino suggested as much when he upgraded AT&T’s stock to overweight earlier this week.

“Yes, Starlink may bully its way into mobility, but it would take years to acquire and clear the right spectrum,” he wrote. “Unless Starlink behaves very aggressively, the Big 3 will probably not provide an MVNO.”

Yet Supino added that he now values AT&T’s stock at an earnings multiple “below historic averages to reflect a stubborn Starlink overhang.”

SpaceX will disrupt $1.6 trillion US communications industry, Oppenheimer says

June 3 (Reuters) -- SpaceX will disrupt the $1.6 trillion U.S. communications industry as the Elon Musk-led company’s satellite broadband unit Starlink expands, Oppenheimer said in a note on Wednesday, adding that legacy broadband providers like AT&T may be most at risk.

The brokerage raised its estimate for 2035 space revenue to $800 billion from $500 billion earlier, ahead of the company’s highly anticipated IPO this month.

• The expansion of Starlink is expected to further pressure cable firms, which are already losing subscribers.

• Oppenheimer said companies such as AT&T, Verizon Communications, and T-Mobile could see faster declines in subscribers and revenue going forward.

• The brokerage expects Starlink to "entrench itself in many critical applications, reducing churn and increasing pricing power."

• Oppenheimer raised its 2030 estimates for U.S. broadband subscribers to 15 million from 10 million earlier.

• SpaceX’s rise could also tap into the half-a-trillion-dollar handset market as the company aims to replace smartphones, Oppenheimer said.

Why Verizon’s Surprise CEO Change Rattled the Wireless Industry

The unexpected CEO transition is shaking up wireless stocks, and likely signaling increased competition ahead, Wall Street analysts warn.

Verizon appointed lead independent director Daniel Schulman as its new CEO on Monday, effective immediately. With this new transition, Verizon will focus on maximizing value propositions, reducing costs, and delivering sustainable long-term growth for shareholders, according to Monday’s news release. Other telecommunications companies might want to be on their guard, analysts say.

“The market is clearly worried about Verizon becoming more aggressive again in wireless to defend share,” Sam McHugh, head of telecom equity research at BNP Paribas, wrote on Monday night.

Both T-Mobile and AT&T stocks declined on Monday after the announcement. One concern for investors is that the changes at Verizon, if successful, may increase competition for fellow telecom companies. The sector’s shares, however, bounced back on Tuesday.

The managerial transition comes as investors have been looking for more from Verizon. Hans Vestberg started as CEO on Aug. 1, 2018. The stock had declined 15% from the close on July 31, 2018 to the close on Oct. 3, 2025, far underperforming the 12% rise of AT&T, the 285% increase of T-Mobile, and 138% jump of the S&P 500

“From the beginning of Hans’s tenure until now, Verizon has organically added about 5MM postpaid phones while the industry has added about 55MM postpaid phones,” New Street’s David Barden wrote Tuesday. “When Hans joined, Verizon was capturing over 20% of annual industry postpaid phone net adds; that share has fallen to an average of 5% over the last four years.”

Barden added that he believes Verizon’s statement Monday hints at possible major changes coming to the wireless carrier, including potential price cuts for consumers. Over the past few years, the company has raised its prices, leading to increased churn, or customers switching to less expensive plans.

“Greater focus on subscriber growth may impact growth at T-Mobile and AT&T while putting additional pressure on broadband sub trends at Comcast and Charter once Verizon’s convergence strategy is brought to bear,” UBS analyst John Hodulik wrote in a note Monday. He rates Verizon as Neutral with a $45 price target.

Shares of Verizon were up 0.8% to $41.78 on Tuesday. The stock has risen 4.5% this year, compared to the 14% increase of the S&P 500.

It depends on your zip code. In most major to medium-sized cities and their surrounding suburbs it's fairy well built out. If you live out in the sticks that's another matter any may never be properly built out. Haven't looked at the coverage maps lately and am sure someone can correct me if wrong but think the majority of the 5G network build has already happened. A few years ago when VZ and others had nonstop commercials about 5G this and 5G that, it was near the peak of network spending cycle.

What on Earth does this talking to yourself have to do with Verizon stock? You simply cannot control your non sequitur ways, can you?

Do you have any comment on the almost two year consolidation pattern in VZ stock price? Some believe it will ultimately break higher because of the investments they've made in building out their 5G network so far this decade. Do you have an insightful opinion on that or would you rather just prattle on in your typical non sequitur fashion? Thank you in advance, and have a nice day. :-)
