The Gap Is Still Wide Open. A follow...

BlackBerry: The Analysts Are Catching Up. The Gap Is Still Wide Open.

A follow-up to "BlackBerry: The Toll Booth on the Future of Every Road"

— published June 25, 2026

Four days ago I published a long worded thesis arguing that Wall Street was pricing BlackBerry as a $4.5 billion legacy automotive royalty business while sitting on top of a safety-certified platform company with seventeen unmodeled revenue verticals. The stock was trading around $8.82.

It closed today at $12.48, after touching a 52-week high of $12.61 intraday. That's a 47 percent move in four days, on top of a stock that was already up 150 percent year-to-date before the original article published.

This is not a victory lap. It's a status update on what's confirmed, what's new, and — most importantly — why the gap between the stock price and Wall Street's own price targets is now wider, in absolute dollar terms, than it was when I wrote the original piece.

The Headline Number Nobody Is Talking About

As of today, June 29, the consensus analyst rating on BlackBerry remains Hold. The average price target across the most recently updated coverage sits at approximately $7.58 to $7.90.

Read that again. The stock is trading at $12.48. The people whose job is to price this company professionally have an average target below the current trading price. Several individual firms still carry targets in the $8 to $9.50 range even after raising them substantially this week.

This is not a criticism of those analysts — they did exactly what good analysts do. They raised numbers based on what management disclosed and what they could verify. RBC, for example, had modeled $135.9 million in revenue and $19.6 million in adjusted EBITDA for the quarter. Actual results came in at $152.9 million and $36.3 million — RBC's own EBITDA estimate was nearly doubled by reality. They responded by raising their target from $4.50 to $9.00. That's a rational, professional reaction to a beat.

But it illustrates exactly the dynamic the original thesis described: analysts are modeling the business that already happened, not the business that's being built. The stock has now moved past even the upgraded targets, and it happened within days of those upgrades being published.

What's Confirmed Since the Original Article

Three new developments have surfaced since publication that directly extend the thesis.

Mercedes-Benz is in active Alloy Kore pricing discussions. This is no longer speculative. Stifel's full initiation note — which became publicly available after the original article — specifically named Mercedes-Benz as a customer in active commercial discussions for Alloy Kore. CFO Tim Foote's own words from the shareholder meeting were almost comedic in their understatement: "We're already in pricing discussions" with several customers "and they've not kicked us out of the building yet." That's a CFO confirming live commercial negotiations with one of the world's largest premium automakers for a product that management says could increase per-vehicle software content by three to six times, according to Stifel's analysis.

A Johnson & Johnson AI heart pump is running on QNX. This is the single most unexpected data point to emerge since publication. Stifel's note cited this win as direct validation of the "cross-vertical thesis" — the argument that QNX's certified, deterministic real-time architecture translates directly from automotive into any safety-critical embedded system. A heart pump is about as safety-critical as embedded software gets. There is zero margin for error in a device keeping someone's heart functioning. The fact that Johnson & Johnson selected QNX for this application is a stronger proof point for the GEM thesis than almost anything in the original article, because it demonstrates QNX's certification advantage extending into a market with even less tolerance for failure than automotive ADAS.

Stifel's TAM framework points to a 10x QNX revenue increase through the 2030s. This is more aggressive than the conservative scenarios modeled in the original article, and it comes from an institutional research desk, not from independent analysis. Combined with the 3-6x per-vehicle content multiplier from Alloy Kore, the math underlying the original $200 to $380 full-thesis price target looks less aggressive than it did a week ago.

What the 10-K and Transcript Revealed That the Headlines Missed

Beyond the Stifel note, two primary sources contained material that deserves more attention than it's gotten: BlackBerry's FY2026 10-K and the full Q1 earnings call transcript, as opposed to just the press release.

Buried in the 10-K: BlackBerry now works with over 45 automakers, including the top 10 OEMs and 24 of the top 25 EV OEMs, and every major Tier 1 supplier. That sentence doesn't appear in a single piece of mainstream coverage I've seen this week. Twenty-four of the top twenty-five electric vehicle manufacturers in the world have chosen QNX. That's not a growing embedded OS. That's a near-monopoly on the safety layer of the global EV industry, disclosed in a filing nobody is reading closely.

Also in the 10-K: approximately 20 percent of QNX revenue already comes from non-automotive embedded systems — robotics, medical devices, industrial automation, aerospace, defense, and rail. On $268 million in FY2026 QNX revenue, that's roughly $53.6 million annually already flowing from the GEM category, and that was true before the Johnson & Johnson win, before the NVIDIA Halos collaboration was announced, before any of the catalysts everyone is now discussing. The GEM thesis isn't speculative. It's already a meaningful, growing revenue base hiding in plain sight.

BlackBerry AtHoc is the only critical events management platform authorized with FedRAMP High certification — the most stringent US government cloud security standard — and helps protect more than 75 percent of US government personnel. That's a regulated monopoly in government emergency communications. It appears in the 10-K. It appears in essentially no analyst coverage.

On the earnings call itself, not just the press release, CEO Giamatteo said something more aggressive than anything written up afterward: "Their entire physical AI safety stack that they're going to be rolling out is standardizing on QNX." Not partnering with. Not integrating. Standardizing on. Every physical AI system NVIDIA builds through Halos runs QNX as the certified safety layer. That sentence is in the transcript. It was not in the press release, and most coverage this week has been built off the press release rather than the full call.

Development license revenue hit its highest level in eight quarters. Giamatteo specifically flagged this as a leading indicator: customers buy development licenses at the start of a program, years before royalties begin. The royalty pipeline being built right now for 2028 to 2030 is at a multi-year high, and almost nothing written about this earnings print has mentioned it.

The Secure Communications government win list is longer than the press release suggested. The transcript named specific Q1 wins not in the official release: the US Air Force, US Cyber Command, the US Senate, the US Secret Service, and the White House Communications Agency in North America; BAE Systems, the UK National Crime Agency, the UK Metropolitan Police Service, the Bavarian State Tax Office, Saudi National Bank, and Banque de France in EMEA. BAE Systems is one of the largest defense contractors on earth. The White House Communications Agency manages classified presidential communications. Neither of those relationships reads like a standard enterprise software renewal.

A new design win landed the same week, announced as part of a $1.7 billion Canadian federal trade mission to Japan: Astemo — a joint venture between Hitachi, Honda Motor Co., and JIC Capital with 80,000 employees worldwide — selected QNX as core software for next-generation vehicles. This flows directly into Honda's vehicle lineup through Astemo's supply chain and carries a Hitachi industrial technology validation on top of it. The CEO was personally in Shanghai meeting Chinese government officials and automotive partners the same week. QNX is increasingly showing up as a geopolitical asset in trade diplomacy, not just a commercial software product, and that pattern is now visible across two of Asia's largest automotive markets simultaneously.

An Investor Day is coming, with long-term guidance attached. CFO Tim Foote explicitly deferred detailed long-term numbers on GEM growth and Alloy Kore ASP expansion to "our Investor Day that we've got coming up in the near future." When that event happens and management puts hard multi-year numbers behind GEM and Alloy Kore for the first time, it becomes the most likely single catalyst for a wholesale re-rating of every analyst model currently in circulation — more so than any individual design win.

The original article built a five-year, 50-percent-realization scenario landing at a midpoint of approximately $165 per share. It also built a wage-adjusted purchasing power comparison to the 2007 all-time high of $124, arriving at $227 to $310 in today's dollars using Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data.

Neither of those models priced in the speed of the move that's actually happened. The stock went from $8.38 on June 18 to $12.48 on June 29 — an 11-trading-day window. That is the kind of move that typically reflects a market beginning to price in a re-classification, not just a single quarter's beat. CIBC's note used almost exactly that language, calling the Q1 report "excellent" and describing the debate now shifting to whether this year "marks a step change in growth, operating leverage and value creation."

RBC, despite raising its target to $9, explicitly noted that BlackBerry now trades at 9.6 times next-twelve-month EV/sales — near the top of its five-year range and at a 112 percent premium to auto-tech peers — and concluded that "further upside needs faster sustained growth, especially at QNX." That's an analyst acknowledging the re-rating has started while maintaining a price target the stock has already exceeded. It's a snapshot of an institution in the process of catching up to a moving target.

One closing note on the original article itself: since publication it has circulated well beyond the three platforms it was originally posted to, organically reaching Silicon Investor, Stockhouse, LinkedIn, a professional equity research aggregation platform, and a Chinese financial research outlet covering US equities and physical AI. None of that traffic was solicited. It's worth mentioning only because it suggests the underlying research — particularly the original USPTO patent findings — resonated with exactly the audience this kind of thesis is meant to reach.

The Honest Risk Update

Nothing in the last four days eliminates the risks identified in the original thesis. If anything, the speed of the move increases one specific risk that wasn't weighted heavily enough in the original piece: valuation compression risk. A stock that moves 47 percent in eleven trading days on a single earnings beat is vulnerable to a sharp pullback if the next quarter shows any deceleration, even from an objectively strong base. The per-instance data economics, V2X mandate revenue, and IVY commercial scale — the three largest unmodeled catalysts — still have not appeared in a single reported number. The thesis is being validated qualitatively, through management commentary and analyst language, faster than it's being validated quantitatively, through actual disclosed revenue. That gap between qualitative confirmation and quantitative proof is where the real risk sits for anyone initiating a position at current levels rather than where the article originally found it.

What I'm Watching Next

Three things will determine whether this thesis continues to outrun consensus or whether consensus catches up faster than expected.

The first Alloy Kore design win, whenever it's announced, is the single highest-leverage catalyst remaining. Management has guided to securing it this fiscal year, and the Mercedes discussions suggest it could come from a marquee name rather than a secondary OEM. When it lands, expect another round of target increases, this time potentially exceeding CIBC's current high of $13.

The Investor Day that CFO Tim Foote referenced but did not schedule on the earnings call remains the moment when long-term guidance — specifically on GEM growth rates and Alloy Kore ASP expansion — gets quantified publicly for the first time. That's the event most likely to force a wholesale re-rating of analyst models rather than incremental target increases.

And the consensus gap itself is now the trade. A Hold rating with a sub-$8 average target on a stock at $12.48, following a quarter that beat every metric and validated three of the six pre-identified thesis signals, is not a stable equilibrium. Either the stock pulls back toward consensus, or consensus moves up toward the stock. Everything in the last four days — the Mercedes discussions, the J&J win, the Stifel TAM framework, the magnitude of the earnings beat relative to even sell-side estimates — points toward the latter.

The original thesis argued Wall Street was modeling two revenue streams while seventeen existed. Four days later, the market has started pricing in maybe a third or fourth. The other thirteen are still sitting there, unpriced, exactly where they were when this started.

Disclosure: The author is a shareholder of BlackBerry (NYSE: BB) and has a direct financial interest in the company's performance. So obviously it is very good for us. We've been working with Nvidia for 25 years. Same people, you know, people tend to stick around at NVIDIA very similar to QNX. They're very vested in QNX. We have meetings with them on a bi-weekly basis with the executives. I mean, I think it just opens up a whole new realm for us. I also think on the automotive side, they're starting to get more traction in the level four driving. They use QNX. So, this is fabulous for QNX."

cibcvirtual.com

[Sultan] QNX to Showcase Safe, Deterministic Foundations for Physical AI at Robotics Summ...

QNX to Showcase Safe, Deterministic Foundations for Physical AI at Robotics Summit & Expo

QNX brings hands-on demos, conference keynote, and new industry research to the world's leading commercial robotics event

WATERLOO, ON / ACCESS Newswire / May 6, 2026 / QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited (NYSE:BB)(TSX:BB), today announced a major presence at the Robotics Summit & Expo (May 27 - 28 in Boston), where it will deliver hands-on demonstrations, thought leadership, and new research highlighting how QNX software provides a safe, secure, deterministic foundation for countless next-generation robotic systems, including those enabled by AI.

On the show floor, QNX will present multiple interactive demonstrations illustrating how the QNX® RTOS translates AI-driven decisions into precise, reliable physical actions. Visitors will also learn how QNX® software can scale seamlessly from low-cost prototypes to production-grade commercial robotic platforms, enabling developers to build systems that can operate alongside humans safely and predictably.

Live Demonstrations on the Show Floor:

Accessible Robotics Prototyping on QNX Software
This demo features an entry-level robotic arm built on affordable hardware that can see and mimic human movements to pick up objects. It shows how QNX software can be used as the deterministic control foundation for robotics development, using the QNX® Everywhere program designed to lower the barrier to entry by giving developers free and easy access to QNX software for learning, experimentation, and early-stage prototyping.

Digital Factory Automation Enabled by Sensor Fusion and Deterministic Safety
In a production-style ‘Digital Factory Automation' environment, a QNX® OS-powered high-fidelity robotic arm demonstrates how LIDAR, vision sensing and robot control all work together to enable real-time object detection and avoidance. Incorporating dynamic safety in real-time using the QNX OS, the system responds immediately and deterministically anytime an object or person enters its path of motion.

High-Performance Motion Replication on Intel and NVIDIA Hardware
Powered by high performance Intel and NVIDIA hardware, this demonstration uses AI-based pose detection to precisely replicate human gestures. Visitors can interact directly with the system and watch an on-screen avatar mirror their motions, showcasing how QNX supports real-time, low-latency performance on advanced platforms used in humanoid and AI-enabled robots.

All of these experiences are based on the QNX® General Embedded Development Platform (GEDP), a comprehensive, production-grade solution designed to accelerate the development of safe, secure, and reliable robotics systems. Incorporating the proven QNX RTOS, QNX GEDP provides a unified environment for embedded software development, enabling robotics innovators to bring advanced functionality to market faster while meeting ever-evolving yet stringent safety and security requirements. At the booth, visitors will be able to interact with a GEDP animation that visually demonstrates how these capabilities come together in practice.

QNX Keynote on the Main Stage
QNX President, John Wall, will participate in the opening keynote panel, " Building the Next Era of Robot Autonomy". As robots move beyond enclosed industrial settings into shared human environments, the session will explore how safety, security, and real-time performance must be engineered into systems from the start. Joined by executives from Amazon Robotics, Locus Robotics, and Universal Robots, the panel will examine how leading organizations are enabling safe autonomy at scale as Physical AI becomes a reality.

Launch of Inside the Robot: Architecture Benchmark Report
During the event, QNX will also debut its Inside the Robot: Architecture Benchmark Report, a new global research study examining how robotics development is evolving as systems become more software-defined, AI-enabled, and increasingly deployed alongside humans. Based on a survey of 1,000 robotics developers worldwide, the report will reveal the most significant inhibitors to progress, the gaps between system ambitions and current capabilities, and perspectives on the future of the industry.

"Robotics is at an inflection point where artificial intelligence is no longer confined to screens or simulations but is increasingly expressed through physical movements in shared real-world environments where the safety stakes are incredibly high," said Carsten Hurasky, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, QNX. "QNX provides the deterministic software foundation that makes this new era of Physical AI trustworthy, whether you are experimenting with a low-cost robotic prototype or deploying advanced commercial systems in safety-critical environments. At the upcoming Robotics Summit & Expo, we look forward to showing how developers can start quickly, scale confidently, and build robots that people can trust to perform reliably and safely 100% of the time, no matter the situation."

Visitors are encouraged to stop by the QNX booth (#307) to see the demonstrations firsthand and learn how QNX software helps turn intelligent perception into safe, deterministic action in the physical world.

For more information on QNX, visit QNX.com and follow @QNX News.

[waitwatchwander] QNX has been around and doing it's thing in autos and secure industrial apps for...

QNX has been around and doing it's thing in autos and secure industrial apps forever.

What's really changed? The selection marks a significant milestone for QNX®'s software-defined audio platform, which continues to gain traction among OEMs seeking scalable, high-performance solutions for immersive in-car sound and comes hot on the heels of a recent ‘product of the year' award win at the 2025 International Sound Awards.

QNX Sound is a digital audio platform for software-defined vehicles that decouples audio and acoustics software from hardware, unifying all vehicle functionalities, including voice treatment, media playback, alerts and noise control into one system, helping to streamline development, reduce hardware needs, and speed time-to-market for automakers.

Further validating the platform's value, a new study by Munro & Associates, a leading engineering and manufacturing consulting firm, reveals that QNX's centralized, software-defined approach to in-vehicle audio can deliver substantial hardware and manufacturing efficiencies including:

Hardware cost savings ranging from $21 per mass-market vehicle to $98 per premium model, helping automakers lower production costs while delivering high-end audio experiences at scale.

Printed circuit board (PCB) surface area reductions of up to 44%, enabling smaller, simpler audio hardware that lowers manufacturing costs and frees up space for other vehicle systems.

Weight savings of up to 28%, helping automakers improve energy efficiency, extend EV range, and reduce material costs - all critical factors in competitive vehicle design.

By eliminating traditional DSPs and simplifying amplifier designs, QNX enables OEMs to consolidate hardware across vehicle lines, reduce part numbers, and unlock volume efficiencies, while accelerating time-to-market and reducing long-term development costs.

"China's EV market is setting the pace for global innovation, and we're proud to be part of that momentum," said William Dong, Chief Representative of Greater China, QNX. "This win reinforces QNX's role as a strategic enabler for automakers seeking scalable, software-defined solutions that deliver premium in-cabin experiences quickly and cost effectively."

"Our thorough analysis shows that QNX Sound isn't just a technological upgrade, it's a strategic advantage," said Sandy Munro, CEO of Munro & Associates. "By centralizing audio processing and eliminating legacy components, automakers can dramatically reduce cost, weight, and complexity. It's a smart move for any OEM looking to keep pace in this hypercompetitive era."

As SDV complexity grows, QNX remains committed to helping automakers navigate change, accelerate innovation, and deliver safer, smarter vehicles. QNX is trusted as the foundation for a software-driven future by most leading OEMs and Tier 1s worldwide, including BMW, Bosch, Continental, Dongfeng Motor, Geely, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo, and more. Its foundational software supports future-proof engineering design, from digital cockpits and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to infotainment systems and domain controllers, enabling automakers to bring innovation to market faster and at lower cost.

For more information on QNX, visit QNX.com and follow @QNX News.

[Sultan] BlackBerry SecuSUITE Expands to Windows Devices, Extending Sovereign-Grade Prote...

BlackBerry SecuSUITE Expands to Windows Devices, Extending Sovereign-Grade Protection Across the Digital Workplace

feeds.issuerdirect.com
