The big event was the campaign of Bonnie Prince Charlie who came riding out of the north country, attracting Highlanders by the drove to the Jacobite cause. When the Brits crushed them at the Battle of Culloden, the victors decided to clear out the people from damn pesky Highlands. This, combined with the earlier clearances that created open sheep-grazing land where once farms supported people, produced the great dispersal. You can see it all across the north to this day.

That branch of the family became Texans but I might know more about Scotland than Texas. Golf might be the last vestige of my Scottish heritage. I would like to visit Scotland before I die to see the highlands where my wild Texas relatives came from and to play a few links courses.
