Taiwan Semiconductor ADRs began trading on the NYSE today. This is the largest semiconductor manafacturer in Taiwan, and one of the largest in the world. I'm hoping we can get a meaningful discussion going, and I'll input what I know of the Taiwanese semi industry as well as provide updates from contacts in Taiwan. Happy trading! What he...

From Grok:

Did the stock TSM meet, beat or miss on EPS, rev and margin? What headwinds and tailwinds did management mention in it earnings conference call?

TSMC (TSM) beat on EPS, revenue (high end of its own guidance / modest beat vs. consensus in USD), and margins in Q2 2026 (reported July 16, 2026).

Key Q2 2026 Results

EPS: Beat. Actual ~$4.22–$4.31 per ADR (sources vary slightly on the exact USD conversion; NT$27.25). Consensus was around $3.81 (or similar ~$3.77–$3.81 range). Strong YoY growth (~61–77% depending on metric).

Revenue: Beat / high end of guidance. Actual US$40.2 billion (NT$1,270.38 billion), up 12% QoQ and ~33.7–36% YoY. Guidance range was ~$39–40.2 billion; it hit the high end. Consensus estimates were generally in the ~$39.3–39.8 billion range (modest beat).

Margins: Beat / above guidance and sequential improvement. Gross margin 67.7% (up 150 bps QoQ from 66.2%, and well above the prior-year 58.6%; slightly ahead of guidance). Operating margin 60.3% (up 2.2 points QoQ). Net profit margin 55.6%. High utilization, cost improvements, and operating leverage drove this, partially offset by overseas fab dilution.

Advanced nodes (7nm and below) were 77% of wafer revenue (N2 3%, N3 30%, N5 33%, N7 11%). HPC rose to 66% of revenue (+20% QoQ), while smartphone was 22% (-4% QoQ).

Q3 2026 guidance (raised full-year outlook): Revenue $44.6–45.8 billion (~12% sequential / ~37% YoY at midpoint); gross margin 65–67%; operating margin 56–58% (assumes ~NT$32/USD). Full-year 2026 revenue growth raised to slightly above 40% YoY in USD terms (from >30% previously). CapEx raised to $60–64 billion.

Headwinds and Tailwinds from the Earnings Conference Call Management (CFO Wendell Huang and CEO C.C. Wei) highlighted a strongly positive overall picture driven by AI/HPC, while being explicit about near-term margin pressures and some end-market softness.

Tailwinds (positive factors emphasized):

Extremely robust and multi-year AI-related / HPC demand; customers (including cloud providers) providing strong signals. AI megatrend remains a core conviction driver.

Strong demand for leading-edge process technologies, supporting the N2 (2nm) steep ramp and overall advanced-node mix.

Emergence/acceleration of agentic AI, boosting CPU demand in data centers (additional silicon content beyond accelerators); TSMC benefits across x86, Arm, and RISC-V as most are its customers.

Technology leadership, manufacturing excellence, cost improvements, productivity gains, and cross-node capacity optimization helping offset dilutions.

Capacity expansion confidence (no expected bottlenecks); raised CapEx to support multi-year structural demand from 5G/AI/HPC. Additional ~$100B Arizona investment (several more 2nm-and-below + packaging fabs), continued Taiwan investment (13 leading-edge/advanced packaging fabs planned), and other global builds (including Japan).

Solid liquidity, cash generation, and commitment to rising dividends (2026: NT$24/share, +33% YoY).

Headwinds / Challenges (explicitly called out):

Near-term gross margin dilution from the steep N2 ramp: ~3–4 percentage points in H2 2026 (main driver of sequential Q3 margin guide-down to ~66% midpoint).

Ongoing and widening dilution from overseas fab ramps: forecast 2–3% early stages, widening to 3–4% later as scale grows.

Softness / challenges in consumer and price-sensitive end markets due to rising component prices and macroeconomic uncertainties (management being prudent in planning; smartphone sequential decline noted).

Higher inventory days (partly from N2 ramp).

Foreign exchange rate volatility (uncontrollable factor).

Broader notes in coverage of the call included potential packaging capacity tightness, working capital increases, and execution/timing aspects of large investments, though these were secondary to the margin and end-market points management stressed.

Overall call tone was positive: demand and technology leadership outweigh the operational/margin headwinds, supporting raised growth and investment plans. Results and commentary reinforced AI as the dominant growth engine.

[JakeStraw] Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC Agreed to Establish Joint Venture for Next...

Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC Agreed to Establish Joint Venture for Next-Generation Image Sensors
pr.tsmc.com

[JakeStraw] TSMC Reports Second Quarter EPS pr.tsmc.com Year-over-year, second quarter ...

TSMC Reports Second Quarter EPS
pr.tsmc.com

Year-over-year, second quarter revenue increased 36.0%, while net income and diluted EPS both increased 77.4%.
