The best explanation I have heard for the weather changes in general is that the decreasing temperature differential between the Arctic and the lower latitudes is weakening the jet stream and its ability to steer/control the weather the way we are used to. But that is a pretty general explanation.

Hmmm, that makes me wonder. Does the Antarctic have its own version of the jet stream?
