I don't see how Krugman's view is any less ideological. Ideology is probably not the main problem. A lot of it is in the execution. IMO universal care is the answer, if we can manage the cost. Private accounts if executed properly is better than universal care out of control. Which is worse? Universal care run amok or private accounts where large number of people suffer. Six of one, half a dozen the other. Ideally, in a prosperous society with a high degree of productivity - everyone in that society should benefit to some degree. Dog eat dog way of life is okay if you live in a dirt poor society.
