>> Same area. Unidentifiable riot police. Key word--unidentifiable. No logos on their uniforms or gear to show the police organization that dispatched them or even if it was a police organization. Or military organization. No crest or logo or trademark. No name or badge number. Of course, a mask so no face. When asked whom they represented, either crickets or "DOJ."

Sorry, maybe we watched two different things, but what I saw was police (clearly marked) dressed in unmistakable riot gear:

They should realize that when safety is at stake the police are obligated to restore the safety. Period.

I would also point out that tear gas had been used multiple occasions over the course of the week, including Minneapolis, Kansas City (where crowds weren't even that big) and numerous other places. This is part of crowd control. In this case, the used pepper pellets instead of tear gas, but neither is harmful. This is how crowds are controlled when it is necessary.

I think anyone should be able to see it was entirely appropriate in the circumstances.

I would like to comment on one other point: The "peaceful" in "Peaceful Protests" requires a timestamp. If it happens to be peaceful throughout, then maybe not. But if at any point it is not peaceful, it is meaningless not to timestamp it, and if there is a likelihood of it becoming violent as was in the case, it may be advisable to disperse the crowd early so as to avoid the kinds of problems that appeared earlier in the week in both DC and other places, where total loss of control occurred.

You will allow that large, angry crowds do require controlling, right?
