It all depends on the tread depth, if its more than 3/32 different they recommend you replace all the tires. Its rare that you have to replace on tire. I never had to all the years I have been driving. If your tires get slashed they usually do one side. Insurance will sometimes cover all tires if they need to be replaced so it does not damage your differential. Some times they will not cover it.
