<a life and death matter for tens of thousands of people someplace else.>

No. What Americans don't understand, is that it is a "life and death matter" for us as well. We are one of the very few nations on earth that has not, within living memory, had our homeland turned into a slaughterhouse. The last real war fought on American soil ended in 1865, and we collectively believe the childish illusion that It Can't Happen Here.

It can, and it will, if we stay on the road we're on. Every relative, every friend, of every flesh-and-blood "collateral damage" we do, in Afghanistan and Iraq and elsewhere, these are the people who are going to carry out the next 9/11. With nukes, next time. They have the will (we've given them ample reason), and soon they will have the means.
