KVH TracVision and TracNet Provide Satellite TV/Internet on Marathon Luxury Coaches
Largest Bus Converter Marathon Coach Upgrades to TracVision L3 as Standard Equipment; TracNet and Tracphone 252 Also Chosen

Wednesday September 25, 7:56 am ET

MIDDLETOWN, R.I., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Recognizing that its customers desire greater versatility as well as two-way Internet on the move, Marathon Coach has announced that it will offer KVH Industries' (Nasdaq: KVHI - News) premier TracVision® L3 satellite TV antenna as standard equipment on every vehicle it builds. The Internet- and Digital Video Broadcast (DVB)-compatible TracVision L3 represents a significant upgrade in capabilities for Marathon's customers, who have enjoyed the reliability of KVH's original DIRECTV®- compatible TracVision LM satellite TV antenna since 1999. In addition to its upgrade to TracVision L3, Marathon also named KVH's innovative TracNet(TM) Mobile High-speed Internet System as the coach conversion manufacturer's exclusive satellite Internet system.

"We are extremely pleased that Marathon Coach is not only continuing its long-standing practice of offering TracVision systems to its customers but that they are now including the TracVision L3, the most versatile satellite TV system available today, as standard equipment on all Marathon coaches," remarked Ian Palmer, vice president of satellite sales. "Marathon was among the first coach converters to recognize the value and appeal of in-motion satellite TV and to offer TracVision antennas as optional equipment. It is gratifying to know that KVH satellite products continue to meet the demanding standards for quality, value, and capabilities set by Marathon, the largest luxury bus converter, and its customers."

Along with the TracVision L3, Marathon Coach will also offer the KVH Tracphone® 252 satellite communications system and the KVH TracNet system as optional equipment. This combination will enable Marathon to equip its customers with a complete mobile office, communications system, and entertainment center ideal for use throughout North America.

"Marathon Coach supplies its coaches with the highest technology available," stated Steve Schoellhorn, executive vice president of Marathon Coach, Inc. "In-motion satellite reception, Internet, and telephone capabilities are what Marathon customers want. They want the services they receive at home in their luxury coaches. We are more than happy to provide KVH systems to them."

TracVision L3 is a fully automatic, in-motion antenna that delivers satellite television and audio from DIRECTV, DISH Network(TM), or other high- powered DVB-compatible satellite systems worldwide while the vehicle is both in motion and parked. The TracVision L3 is also fully compatible with the new TracNet Mobile High-speed Internet System. TracNet receives Internet downloads at speeds reaching 400 kilobits per second (Kbps) via the high-powered, mobile DirecPC® satellite service, available exclusively from KVH. The Tracphone 252 provides global satellite voice, fax, and data service via the Inmarsat mini-M service.

"Marathon Coach has had a longstanding relationship with KVH," Schoellhorn said. "Both companies are committed to producing high quality products designed to meet, or exceed, the demands of our clients. KVH provides Marathon Coach with the advanced systems we need."

If the point of "marrying" is to thwart hackers, I wonder why the European systems don't do it? In any case, I agree with you that what is isn't what necessarily will be.

BTW, the TracNet brochure shows return path options that may work for enabling PPV:

<<Mobile DirecPC customers will have three integrated return link options:
- A telephone jack, for lower-cost, land-line dial-up connections while parked or at the dock;
- A cellular modem with an external, roof/deck-mounted antenna; and
- A satellite modem and antenna (mounted in the same dome as the cellular modem antenna) providing wide geographic coverage as well as a supplemental low-speed mode. >>

Is this what you are referring to?

And don't forget the wi-fi 802.11b and 10/100 Ethernet connects. This is very connectible product!

With the Marathon announcement we know that under past production the numbers will not be that high. But with all the new technology coming to the table, and the problems associated with business travel, we may be seeing a beginning of a new trend here. Corporations may be looking to deploy a number of these Specialty busses to take their staff to the field for training, demos, and point of sale public relations. One such signal that a new trend for mobile offices is being born is that Sales in the RV industry are up and growing while the economy in general has many weak spots. Historically RV/ Custom Busses are items that are in hot demand during flush periods when employment is high and money is flowing. Perhaps what the RV industry is experiencing is a shift in demand from consumer to Business. It makes perfect sense that companies look for ways to make a lasting impression on their field networks that a properly customized vehicle could bring to the table. MTV'S Road Rules points to a shift in the way these vehicles can be used, a whole show is built around this concept. How long before companies begin rolling up to the Home depot and feature a party for local staffs to include the training? These evolutions in how companies build sales staffs are key to sustaining brand and sales momentum. JVHI should produce collatoral literature and begin distributing in conjunction with their partners in the RV industry brochures on how to make the MOBILE Home Office a productive part of a market mix.

Today a key manager hops on a plane and travels for a few days in a field territory with the local sales force, but this methodology is old news, the manager cant bring the resources to the table to win mind share. More and better skills and tools are needed. Have I hit on something here or am I all wet?

<<Perhaps what the RV industry is experiencing is a shift in demand from consumer to Business. It makes perfect sense that companies look for ways to make a lasting impression on their field networks that a properly customized vehicle could bring to the table.>>

Recent news is pointing towards that too. The Becker win is for LUXURY Mobile Offices. Other similar wins should follow.

But what is the next step after that? When these people travel, they arrive at an airport, and are met by ... an ORDINARY Limo. What a come down! <g>

How long before Limo rental agencies in all the big cities need to add at least a few high end "mobile office" Limos? This will turn into a competitive issue, as the ones that offer such services will win the high end customers, and the ones that don't will lose them. These people will start to demand mobile connectivity wherever they go.

There are many tens of thousands of Limos in the world (no DD, but I live near an airport and there are Limos everywhere). The low-profile antenna is a perfect match for a Limo, as when painted it will look just like the Limo just has a roof rack. KVH has a very large market here, just waiting to evolve. I don't think it will take too long, either.

yes sector, thats the new pdf i was referring to.

in addition to luxury buses with tracnet, there should be a significant market outfitting commuter trains (ie: amtrak) with wi-fi . there would be a large number of wired clients, who are captive for a significant time and recurring daily ... i would think the service would make a great return on their hardware investment just by charging a couple of cents over KVHI's charge.

I wonder if KVHI's billing system might be able to accomodate a billing premium for these kind of large resellers??
