The sidebar to that article posts the growth rate of iTunes (see stats below). It took from April 2003 to July 2004 to get to 100 million tunes sold. In five months (July-December 2004) that had doubled to 200 million. In five more months (Dec 2004-May 2005) it had doubled again, to 400 million. That is a rate of about 40 million songs per month in early 2005. In the next two months (May-July 2005) they sold 100 million, or about 50 million per month. Now they have gone from 500 million in mid July to 1 billion in mid February, a little over 7 months. The percentage rate of growth has actually decreased, ever so slightly, as the base has grown larger (doubling every 5 months at this time last year, now doubling every 7 months), but with 500 million songs sold in the past 7 months you have to figure they are currently at about 100 million songs a month and rising fairly fast. With the explosion in iPods sold in the fourth quarter, it is certainly possible that the percentage growth rate will actually increase a bit as the year goes on and those users feed their Pods with iTunes bought from the store.
Even if it doubles from 1 billion at the slightly declining rate we have just seen, that still means the 2 billion celebration would come about nine months from now, or right during the 2006 holiday season.
Watching that counter is addictive.... a couple of people at work had it on today.

I agree that MacBook Pro is an awkward name, but long? It's only one more character (not counting the space) and the same number of syllables as PowerBook.
There's no question that the word "PowerBook" flows better, though. Rolls right off the tongue.
