We default. Lose our world reserve currency status...one of the best things that could happen to us in the long run, I believe. Read a very good analysis awhile back, which I'll post if I can find it, on how much being the reserve currency costs us. Historically nations in this role throughout history have profited initially but pay a long term cost. Excess liquidity leads to massive debt. We are there.
Think about a reality where:
we had to live on a budget...politicians couldn't spend what we don't have;
we brought our troops home and started minding our own business. Europe could dam well pay for its own defense;
etc.
