Canada would bear the costs while Trump would reap the rewards. The whole setup was as clear as sunny day in CA. Trudeau could have, and should have found a way to let Meng slip through the cracks while officially protesting the mishap. There wasn't much that Trump could do about it that he was not already doing.
Also, say what you will about Trump, but unless you had publicly bruised his ego, which this would not have been, Trump was and is extremely transactional. Much more so than any other politician I've known. This means that Trump would not have kept a grudge. If there was a deal later on to be made that Trump would consider favorable, then he would have made that deal and Canada's problems would have been short lived. It is not as if arresting Meng did not have a cost associated with it. |

BTW, I was skiing in Whistler a few years ago when Trudeau was there with his family. I happened to be in the restaurant when they were having dinner. They seemed normal. The kids were well behaving. And overall they were good. I have nothing against him as a person. I just think his leadership sucks. And not just because of the Meng affair.
From driving a car to operating on a patient to selling services at a hotel concierge, everyone gets better with experience. I just don't believe leading a country is where they should earn their chops. Not having served in serious positions should disqualify a person for the top roles. Maybe they'll be good, or maybe not. It just isn't a good idea to take that chance. |
