Tigard, Oregon-based Agilyx has announced what it calls a collaborative agreement with Monroe Energy, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc., to supply up to 2,500 barrels per day of the company’s synthetic fuel feedstock. Agilyx uses plastic scrap to produce the fuel product, which is registered as Agilyx Synthetic Crude Oil (ASCO).

Monroe will refine the ASCO into jet fuel that will be used by Delta. Agilyx plans to locate a production facility near Monroe’s refinery in the Philadelphia area.

“This is a capstone achievement for Agilyx,” says Joe Vaillancourt, CEO of the firm. “We are very excited to be working with Monroe Energy and Delta. As we advance the number and types of products we can make from waste plastics, this project marks the first truly commercial-scale facility that will advance the new plastics economy.”

GRE has designed, built, tested and is producing fuel at a commercial rate from its Renewable Fuel Production (“RFP”) unit. GRE is taking waste products that municipalities pay to have removed – and converting that waste into EPA certified fuel products such as diesel (ASTM D975), home heating oil (ASTM D396), or electricity. The process from the machine mimics the natural geological processes involved in the production of fossil fuels.

Headquartered in Yonkers, New York, GRE was founded in December 2010 by Nicholas T. Canosa, President and CEO of GRE. Prime giant to install pyrolysis plant

SABIC, one of the world’s largest chemicals producers, will install a demonstration unit to recycle mixed plastics into feedstock for crackers.

Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC), a publicly owned manufacturer of plastics and various other chemical products based in Saudi Arabia, will install the demonstration unit at its facility in The Netherlands, according to chemical industry journal ICIS.

Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh, SABIC’s executive vice president of petrochemicals, told ICIS the plant would produce a pyrolysis oil from contaminated, mixed-streams of plastics otherwise headed for incineration or landfill. The final product will serve as feedstock for the company’s European crackers, which are units that break molecules to create new products.

Al-Fageeh spoke to ICIS at the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association Annual Forum.

“We are supporting greatly the mechanical recycling of plastics, but we believe that the long term sustainable circular economy will lie in chemical recycling,” Al-Fageeh said.

Thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of polystyrene (PS) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), poly-ethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics were carried out in a 25 cm3 stainless steel micro reactor at around 430–440 °C under 5.5–6.0 MPa of N2 gas pressure for 1 h. Three reactions of each plastic with PS were conducted in the ratio of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3. The amount of PS was varied to explore its role and reactivity. In all coprocessing reactions, ratio 1:1 afforded the best yields in the form pyrolytic oils. SIM distillation of hexane soluble portion showed that the low boiling fractions were not found and fractions were obtained only after 96 °C + boiling point. It could be due to the vaporization of high volatile components. In most of the binary pyrolysis, light cycle oil (LCO) fractions have low recovery than heavy cycle oil (HCO). GC identified some very important chemical compounds present in the liquid products obtained from the pyrolysis of mixed plastics. The results obtained from this study have shown usefulness and feasibility of the pyrolysis process of the mixed plastics as an alternative approach to feedstock recycling.

Good piece on 60 minutes 2/16/2018- on plastic history,massive plastic waste problems and some work on possible waste remedies.

P.S. Our company, a zero landfill company now more recently found a company that will take our plastic waste and make it into a rope.

Zero landfill - I try that as best I can and can recycle most everything - organic in a green container, paper/cardboard in a black container, solid plastic and metal in a blue container and anything else in a "garbage" bag which primarily these days consists almost entirely of film plastic. Once that film is recycled, somehow, I'll be at "zero" garbage.

Anything of "value" we put at the curb with a "free" sign on it.

We do have "dirt" from the vacuum and construction stuff like used wood, gypsum board etc. and old furniture and clothing to get rid of. As I walk thru Walmart I often wonder where all that stuff will eventually end up.

Groups present recycling technology research roadmap

A European chemicals and plastics industry report identifies technology developments needed to help usher in a circular economy for plastics.

The 29-page document, “Plastics Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda in a Circular Economy,” was released by the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem). Founded by six different industry groups in Europe, SusChem describes itself as a forum to bring together businesses, academia, policymakers and others to use chemical sciences to solve societal problems.

The report takes a wide-ranging look at technologies for boosting the sustainability of plastics, breaking the topic down into three broad categories: improving the chemistry of plastics, boosting recycling and incorporating alternative feedstocks.

The recycling section speaks to the need for a wide variety of technologies in the areas of feedstock preparation, sorting and separation. It also discusses different recycling approaches (mechanical, chemical, thermal, thermochemical and multi-layer/compound recycling) and post-processing. It further categorizes the technologies based on whether they’re expected to have a low, medium, or high impact.

Those anticipated to have a high impact on recycling include processes for removing contaminants, inks and odors. Plastics Recycling Update: Technology Edition has previously written about a couple of the technologies suggested, including de-inking and use of supercritical carbon dioxide to remove odors.

The document also suggests pretreating multi-layer films by immersing them in chemical solutions and breaking down polyolefins via catalytic depolymerization. Additionally, the paper notes that implementing an international standard for polymer structures would greatly help with recycling.

The document was published on Dec. 6 by SusChem, European Plastics Converters (EuPC), European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), PlasticsEurope, and the European Composites, Plastics and Polymer Processing Platform (ECP4), all of which contributed to the research.

“The report presents a shared vision, demonstrates how collaboration within the plastic value chain will be a driving force for change, and outlines the future research needs required to fulfil the objectives of the European Plastic Strategy,” according to EuPC. “The technology solutions described are part of an integral approach to make the entire plastics production more circular.”
