TAILWIND? CTech correction says: 'Ooops, we meant the 5G Unlicensed band chip'. Is this worse? mmWave is a recognized tech challenge but WFi and Bluetooth are undergoing enhancements for the 5G era that are just tweeks to existing radios and software.

An important capability is handling LTE over WiFi as with LTE-U and LTE-LAA and multifire.
Bluetooth has a couple enhancements for both super low power and at the other end, super high power and high bandwidth.

With the possibilities increased, the story falls too short on details to know what happened, except that someone else's Unlicensed band chip won Apple's buisiness - think Broadcom of course.

This could be tailwind for Sequans who already has a proven LTE-over-unlicensed solution in its CBRS solutions and could be invited to the party by someone who has a need for a proven tech provider.

Hmmm, who might that be?

Time for more

India News Tikona Bharti Airtel M&A approved by NCLT over ownership and assets dispute. DoT next.
Tikona stated to be debt-free and planning to double size - appears to operate as an MVNO providing BWA/FWA on Bharti Airtel after sales of all assets besides employees. Expect roaming across entire Bharti Airtel network worldwide including Africa. Bharti Airtel also operates a JV with Verizon of USA for CDN and content - some of which is USA sourced - also India and China - ala Netflix.

NCLT clears Bharti Airtel's Tikona acquisition
The alliance will now need the approval of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
ETTelecom | July 10, 2018, 21:05 IST
MUMBAI: The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has given its nod to the merger of Bharti Digital Networks (formerly called Tikona Digital Networks) with Bharti Airtel. The NCLT in its Tuesday order stated that under the scheme of amalgamation, all the property, rights and powers of Bharti Digital Networks will now be transferred to Sunil Mittal owned company. A similar transfer will happen of all the liabilities, duties and proceedings that are by or against Bharti Digital Networks . "In view of absence of any other objections , having been placed on record before this Tribunal and since all the requisite statuary compliances having been fulfilled, this Tribunal sanctions the scheme of amalgamation...with the company petition as well as the prayer made therein ", said the order . The alliance will now need the approval of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT)... Acquisition of Tikona gives Bharti Airtel access to the former’s 4G spectrum in five circles-—Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West), Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan... ET had earlier reporte(d) that the Tikona deal, which includes taking on debt of Rs 500-600 crore, will see Airtel net 100 MHz of 4G spectrum in the 2300 MHz (4G) band equally split across the five circles, taking its total 4G holding to close to 880 MHz (including Telenor India), compared with 1,169 MHz for Jio and 1,089 MHz for the Vodafone-Idea combine. It will also get 350 cell sites in those five circles but won’t take on any employees of Tikona..

ETTelecom | March 27, 2017, 09:25 IST NEW DELHI: Tikona will be a debt free company in telecom space with enough resources to grow after the completion of sale of its 4G business to Bharti Airtel, according to Prakash Bajpai, chief executive officer of Tikona. In an interaction with ET’s Danish Khan, Bajpai said that Tikona Digital’s current business and assets will be moved to Tikona Infinet, which will become an integrated data services operator to the home, enterprise and public wifi markets. He said that the company will continue to be backed by Tikona Digital’s erstwhile global investors. Edited excerpts.

Bharti Airtel will take over about $150 million debt of the ISP as part of the agreement, said Bajpai...
The current business and assets of Tikona Digital Networks, other than the 4G business and the spectrum, will be moved to Tikona Infinet Limited (TIL), which will become an integrated data services operator to the home, enterprise and public WiFi markets or customer segments in India. Bajpai said that Tikona Infinet will continue to provide wireless broadband services over which were earlier offered by Tikona Digital in India’s top 25 cities and grow them further. Tikona Infinet would also continue to grow its enterprise business comprising MPLS VPN and allied services that they provide to large enterprise customers across India.
The executive said that Tikona Infinet will continue to be backed by Tikona Digital’s erstwhile global investors -- Goldman Sachs, Oak Investment partners, Everstone Capital, L&T Infrastructure Finance, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and others. Bajpai said that the demand for surplus or unused spectrum available with companies like Tikona emerged only after the last auction. Prior to the October 2016 auction, there was no demand for the 4G spectrum due to under-developed 4G handset eco system, a reason behind Tikona’s half-hearted approach in the 4G domain.

So, this gives the appearance of an MVNO relationship sellng TIKONA branded service with TIKONA branded CPE equipment on the Artel network. This appears to be good news as Rs5-600crore (est $91M) debt is retired via a cash pool resulting from the $171M loan plus $244M sale yielding net $324M for operations and procuring CPE now that the network expense is turned over to Airtel. It also implies an expansion of offerings into MiF-type hotspots for mobile service now that Airtel coverage is provided.

Airtel acquires Tikona's 4G business for Rs 1,600 crore By ET Bureau | Mar 24, 2017, 12.33 AM IST
NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel has acquired Tikona Digital's 4G airwaves for Rs 1,600 crore, ramping up its high-speed broadband spectrum capacity to take on Reliance Jio Infocomm and the Vodafone-Idea Cellular combine in a fiercely competitive market which is seeing rapid consolidation. The deal, announced a few days after Vodafone and Idea said they were merging their businesses to create a company that will replace Bharti Airtel as India's largest telco, gives the Sunil Mittal-led company access to Tikona's 4G airwaves in five circles — Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West), Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan. It will also narrow the gap between Bharti's pan-India 4G spectrum capacity and Vodafone-Idea's and Reliance Jio's, although the difference will still be significant.
Rajesh Tiwari, one of the cofounders of Tikona, though sought to put a spanner in the deal, slapping a legal notice against both the companies for not providing details of how the proceeds will be split among shareholders. He has said the deal should not go ahead until there was clarity about his entitlements and his interests were protected. Apart from increasing spectrum capacity, Bharti Airtel's weighted average spectrum usage charges (SUC) will also reduce because Tikona's SUC is at 1 per cent of adjusted gross revenue (AGR), said Naveen Kulkarni, co-head of research at brokerage PhillipCapital.
"Bharti currently pays SUC of around 4.3 per cent of AGR. With the acquisition of Tikona's spectrum, Bharti's SUC is likely to reduce by 25 basis points, translating into an annual savings rate of Rs 100 crore. Considering the significant enhancement of data footprint and SUC savings (NPV of Rs 1,000 crore), we find the acquisition adds significant value to Airtel," said Kulkarni. ..

BREAKING NEWS: China Mobile announces 5G device procurement including FWA/BWA. Test items purchased in 9/2018, shipped by 11/2018. Decision 2/2019, shipped by 4/2019. The jargon below in the State announcement is a little muddled but it includes CPE, phones, and likely mifi-type hotspots.

Recall that for China the term 5G refers to 3.5Ghz band service.

Good luck to our (known) China ODM partners: Baicells, Sunhans, Huawei, ZTEWeLink, ACETEL, ZMTEL (more?)
The list of offshore partners is longer but it is unknown whether any offshore brands can compete. e.g. Wistron, Sercomm, Sasken, (more)

The 5G Kittens of Helsinki: Herding cats toward the future with Booo!
Erudite pundits dare to claim that HISTORY is the map to the future.
Bullshit.
History is the road map of potholes in the rundown interstate to yesterday.
To get to a tomorrow that we desire requires a vision for a road unlike the past, but very obviously connected to the past and guided by the lessons of the past.

Funny how similar the presiding decisions in 5G mimic the decisions being made over the Rulers and Rules of PEACE: Security, Trust, Economy.

For investors in SEQUANS, the harsh light of "Divide and Conquer" has been more than illuminated truth.
It has been expensive.
The failure to sunset 2G and 3G is exactly the cause of slow and expensive adoption of 5G: 4G isn't yet fully developed. The race to 5G is actually a race to sunset 2G and 3G and in THAT race, China and India are leading, not USA.
And the lack of 4G profits is holding back 5G.
Ditto global democracy.

On the world stage, two Leaders of Great States formed from the downfall of Ruling Monarchies are about to meet.
At the formation of those States, the Casus Belli was Reformation of the Holy Gospel: People heard the TRUTH and realized they were living under a despotic regime intent on maintaining a state of psychological and political terror.
True Word led to reform - sometimes excessive and bloody. Kings, Princes and Boyers slept lightly, if at all.
New rules were written to describe the freedoms and powers in people and government, and limits of freedoms and powers.

It is odd to realize that back then the printing press was a tool of both sides and pamphleteers were the bloggers of their day and could be sentenced to death for opposing local government with reformist printings.

So, all ^this^ is a 5G topic relevent to SQNS owners?
Oh h3ll yeah.

2G and 3G are the Conservative, Orthodox ruling class of service representing a crippling tax in a despotic regime of telecommunication - rhetorically speaking. And 5G is the disruptive proto-anarchist.

The Leaders meeting in Helsinki know their history well enough to know Reformation is fraught with peril.
They know both the limits of freedoms and the powers of government need to be prepared.

Very many of you, I would guess all but a handful of you, have no idea how our own Military was terrified of the Internet and its possibilities and even warned waaay back in the '80's of an impending data war. So when you read of the 'SkyNet-style' systems developed and implemented by 5-Eyes Nations you should know that the harsh lessons of History are guiding their actions. Just as the designs of the printing press were not secret and thus duplicated by anarchists and then simplified and minitiarized to fit in a wagon, so today are the codes of spycraft.

Very many of you, I would guess all but a handful of you, have no idea how the civil wars in India, Arabia, Persia, Chechnya and our colonial states are related - they were all financed by a single Empire bent on domination. Generals Lee and Shamil are dead, but their spirits live on in the descendent's just as hell-bent on forming their own despotic empires of fascism and bigotry. These descendant of bigotry are using the best technology for communication command control and disruption available.

This is a future that anarchists want to craft in their own designs - but it can't be allowed or rule by thuggery will result. And thuggery has been the enemy of peace for over a thousand years of modern history.

And for that reason, 5G needs to be deployed at a pace that PEACE can afford.

mmWave should be available, safe, and limited in its use.
Eventually, tools of Government will be capable enough to disrupt anarchists and lawless actors at 5G speed. Today? Nope.

This is a case of bad actors spoiling our enjoyment of culture like drunken drivers.

And that circles back to Helsinki.

While there is an argument surrounding small skirmishes in Ukraine and larger ones in Syria and giant ones across the Levant, this is by definition a meeting between Rulers deciding how to control an uprising of reform-minded militants and thus it is also window into their calculus that might be used at home in decisions regarding 5G. Islamic 'Rasputniks' are fully weaponized in Syria and across the Levant, and a legitimate ruler has been overwhelmed and nearly overthrown. A similar civil war occurred in the Baltic States during the 90's and well-educated observers fully recognize the horrors and excesses of that period.

If such excesses were allowed to be conducted in the 5G era in the systems of communication command control and disruption then democracy would be at peril.

We are outside observers at a time of great portent.

I have some confidence that POTUS has been briefed well on the casus belli in Ukraine just as in the other locations.
And I expect that his advisors are well learned in the Historic Leaders represented in the geographical area under dispute.
And I fully expect that the deep, dear Historical relationships represented by Catherine the Great and other of the great marriages conceived for peace are fully in mind. POTUS himself is a representative of such a marriage - even if only symbolically.

A thousand years of war across the Balkans and Black Sea states has been a heavy burden and History well describes the potholes.
There are one thousand years of souls crying out for peace in the region, and two men who need to hear them.

Now, the Great Question is: will an enemy of peace who is driven by selfish desire for Empire rise up and destroy both 5G and POTUS attempts at detente just as that same State actor did historically from India to the Caucasus and into our own States? That enemy is well known and active and two-faced.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Develop 4G to its fullest and 5G will be safe by the time it is ready to deploy widely.
Sunsetting the Anciene Regime of 2G and 3G is a step to hastening 5G.

We shall see the corollary in Helsinki and that will tip the state of mind of POTUS. What relic of the past will be 'sunset' to enable the future? What relic of the Anciene Regime can be retired?

One relic is the heavy burden of expense by our Nation to defend Europe.
That is a relic that has been successfully challenged with 'Booo!'
And when those dollars are repatriated, our economy will gain another increment just as it did on tax reform for overseas revenues being repatriated.
These are major successes already booked by the current administration.

While 'Booo!' is an unorthodox style, it has been effective and entertaining.

Can peace in Israel, Korea, and the Caucasus all be achieved under Trump?

Godspeed Mr. President.

IMO

Combined, the three technologies can significantly boost the available capacity and speed... The operator claimed another industry first with Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies and Federated Wireless last year when they conducted a demo using Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band 48 spectrum and LTE Advanced CA. That demo, set in an Ericsson lab in Plano, Texas, included the end-to-end CBRS communication flow using 2x20 MHz LTE carriers and a 256 QAM modulation in the downlink.

US Cellular CTO charts course to 5G 13 JUL 2018... The CTO said US Cellular views mmWave as hotspot spectrum, ideal for deployments in areas including campuses, event venues and manufacturing locations which demand extreme speed. Broad coverage and moderate speed can be supplied via 5G deployments on low- and mid-band spectrum, he added. But Irizarry said US Cellular is also evaluating mmWave for backhaul. “One of the challenges with deploying small cells is getting fibre to these small cells. If I can use mmWave to cell haul from an adjacent macro cell, I make my deployment of small cells, whether they’re for 4G or 5G, a lot easier.”.. While deployment plans are still up in the air, he estimated the operator could launch 5G on its existing low- and mid-band spectrum holdings within a 14- to 18-month time frame... Additionally, the company is aiming to bolster its LTE network through densification and the introduction of 4G beamforming. He added US Cellular is testing LTE-M technology and is in the process of plotting a deployment plan.

JULY 15, 2018 EU pushes China on trade, saying it could open up if it wanted BEIJING (Reuters) - China could open its economy if it wished, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Monday, with the European Union calling on countries to avoid a trade war even as pressure mounts on Beijing over its industrial policies. Playing host to Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang stressed the need to uphold free trade and multilateralism as the United States and China become increasingly mired in a trade dispute, with no sign of negotiations on the horizon... At a joint news briefing with Li and Tusk in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Juncker said that move showed “if China wishes to open up it can do so. It knows how to open up”. Later, at a business forum, he said, “We need just and fair multilateral rules. The EU is open but it is not naive.” At the business event, Li invited executives from European companies operating in China to share their problems.

ERIC harvests Boo-berries due to FCC and POTUS actions causing canceled ZTE orders. Replacement orders going to ERIC for network hardware, software, services. ZTE orders for phones and network gear all canceled at several Operators globally.
This underreported news during this new fiscal reporting season is likely to precede similar news from ODMs for consumer and Enterprise devices also.
This seems like tailwind for non-ZTE device ODMs and - pure speculation - and might be affecting other PRC domestic brands competing in the West, like Huawei.
Heads up!
It is a brief opening in the market and this may be the only quarter to see a singularity in financial trends. It could lead to a more gradual trend following a single sharp adjustment.

Boo-berries in China: Deregulates Power prices to cause inflation in Fab Industries via competitive bidding. Competition inflation results in increased cash flow supporting State debt control.
This means that as costs increase across all businesses and sectors, then cost of IC and fab will increase including finished end user devices of all types and costs in all sectors.
Price disparity globally will shrink.
This is China mashing Boo-berries into whine.

This will benefit all ODMs competing with PRC fabs including State brands like Huawei and ZTE, and also so-called non-State brands like Motorola/Lenovo.
This appears to be tailwind for ODMs competing with PRC brands.
And for fabless IC firms attempting to access markets via non-PRC firms as SEQUANS does with Gemalto.
The Chinese tiger called inflation has been unleashed.
Or is it the Kraken?

JULY 18, 2018 China to open power trading to hydro, nuclear power generators: NDRC BEIJING (Reuters) - China will open an electricity trading market for hydropower and nuclear power generators, and accelerate the process for coal-fired power plants to join the market, the country’s state planner said in a statement on Wednesday. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) also urged local authorities and grid companies to remove barriers on cross-regional power trading and encouraged all types of power generators that can meet energy consumption and emission standards, including captive power plants at industrial plants, to participate in the trading market. China also plans to remove power consumption and generation restrictions for coal, steel, non-ferrous and construction materials companies from this year, allowing them to fully trade in the power market... High value industries such as high-tech, internet and big data companies will also be encouraged to join the power market without voltage and usage restrictions, the statement said.
