Researchers have made a digital map showing a tiny chunk of a human brain in unprecedented detail.

Based on a brain tissue sample that had been surgically removed from a person, the map represents a cubic millimeter of brain—an area about half the size of a grain of rice. But even that tiny segment is overflowing with 1.4 million gigabytes of information—containing about 57,000 cells, 230 millimeters of blood vessels and 150 million synapses, the connections between neurons.

Will Scaling Solve Robotics?

It's interesting that this article discusses some of the abstract mathematical models for robotics. This is couched in the language of Riemanian metrics on Differentiable Manifolds.

Manifolds arise as the actual realizable tasks the space of all realizable robotic tasks. This is generally a low-dimensional manifold sitting in a high dimensional task space.

I did a little research and found a good book on mathematical models in robotics. A course in Differentiable Manifolds I took as an undergraduate sophomore set me on my course to a Ph.D. in Chaos and Fractals.
