No logos on their uniforms or gear to show the police organization that dispatched them or even if it was a police organization. Or military organization. No crest or logo or trademark. No name or badge number. Of course, a mask so no face. When asked whom they represented, either crickets or "DOJ."
Sorry, maybe we watched two different things, but what I saw was police (clearly marked) dressed in unmistakable riot gear:

They should realize that when safety is at stake the police are obligated to restore the safety. Period.

I would also point out that tear gas had been used multiple occasions over the course of the week, including Minneapolis, Kansas City (where crowds weren't even that big) and numerous other places. This is part of crowd control. In this case, the used pepper pellets instead of tear gas, but neither is harmful. This is how crowds are controlled when it is necessary.
I think anyone should be able to see it was entirely appropriate in the circumstances.
I would like to comment on one other point: The "peaceful" in "Peaceful Protests" requires a timestamp. If it happens to be peaceful throughout, then maybe not. But if at any point it is not peaceful, it is meaningless not to timestamp it, and if there is a likelihood of it becoming violent as was in the case, it may be advisable to disperse the crowd early so as to avoid the kinds of problems that appeared earlier in the week in both DC and other places, where total loss of control occurred.
You will allow that large, angry crowds do require controlling, right? |

Granted, the first two preceded the official start of season, but even so...
No doubt Trump will claim that the hurricanes are colluding with the Democrats. |

There have been pictures of unmarked riot police posted right here on this thread. Maybe you only see what you want to see.

I am not talking about this crowd or any need to police it. You are missing the point.
You have it in your head that I simply don't like Trump even though over and over and over I have gone on and on about The Enlightenment and the Founders and the Constitution and Western liberal democracy and human dignity and lanes and the coequal branches of government. That's because my major impetus has been fear for the foundations of my country. The Great Experiment that is the US is being flushed down the toilet. Meanwhile you're engaged in disputing arcane details of crowd hygiene.
Now, we have demonstrations that were triggered by an event having to do with the longstanding issue of lack of police accountability, And, in response, we have Trump wanting to use active duty military to put them down without the consent of governors, a Constitutional lane violation bigly. And, we have somebody or other moving to control crowds using armed actors who are totally unaccountable because they can't even be identified. It doesn't get any more bass-ackwards than that. Or any more illiberal. We're in Fascist territory here.
Yet, you want to make a federal case out of the variations among lachrimatory agents? Wake up and see that your country is in trouble a whole lot bigger than protest-facilitated bad actors.
Have you just brushed off all these renowned generals who have finally been provoked into finally standing up and saying something? |
