Straight Outta Pepcom: Vuzix Touts Sleek; Mediation Bands, Endless OS

    By Tiernan Ray

Ah, Las Vegas. It’s the kind of place, during this week, when the Consumer Electronics Show is in town, that the hotel lobbies have insane recordings, such as Morgan Freeman’s voice babbling on about some crazy machine that weighs as much as “20 fully-grown African elephants,” followed by an over-the-top soundtrack.

And Wednesday evening, ground zero was at the Mirage Hotel, where tons of little card tables were set up for all manner of companies, large and small, showing off their tech wares.

I was buttonholed almost immediately to listen to Vuzix ( VUZI), the makers of smart eyewear. CEO Paul Travers was manning the booth, and he tried on a pair the company’s latest, the “Blade 3000,” which are due out later this year, and expected to retails for “under $1,000,” going to less than $500 next year.

I had to admit, they were sleek, much better-looking than what I’d seen from Vuzix here last year. Travers tried to convince me this is the Oakley of smart eyewear. When you put them on, you see a little image floating before your eyes of information, such as the distance to a destination, or perhaps some details about things in your field of view.

This is not quite augmented reality, according to Travers. It’s more like a version of Google’s “Google Glass.” It doesn’t have the same kind of precision about your environment that Microsoft’s ( MSFT) “HoloLens” does. But then, it’s much more stylish than HoloLens.

I asked Travers how he thinks his specs compare to those of ODG, which I wrote about the other day. “Have you seen their glasses,” he asked, with a roll of his eyes. I offered they seemed to be pretty sleek. He shook his head, “go take a look in their booth,” and he warned me I would not be happy with what I saw. Classic trade show mud-slinging. I took a selfie with the Blade 3000 on:

Vuzix Unveils Award-Winning M3000 Smart Glasses at CES 2017

    PR NewswireJanuary 4, 2017

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Vuzix® Corporation ( VUZI), ("Vuzix" or, the "Company"), a leading supplier of Smart-Glasses, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies and products for the consumer and enterprise markets, is pleased to announce that the Company will showcase its CES 2016 Innovation awards winner, the new M3000 Smart Glasses, at CES 2017. The Company's latest smart glasses product for enterprise and prosumer will be unveiled and operational at PEPCOM's Digital Experience from 7:00 to 10:30 pm on Wednesday, January 4, at the Mirage Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip; and then at the Vuzix booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall Booth #13246, from January 5 to 8, 2017.

Vuzix next-generation, enterprise-grade smart glasses, the Vuzix M3000 Smart Glasses, features advanced 2.0 mm thin see-thru waveguide optics and a custom high-contrast, full-color DLP "Cobra II" display engine. The M3000 Smart Glasses improve existing workflows and open new opportunities in industrial, medical, retail, supply chain, remote help desk, and other aspects of the user's business. The M3000 has been purpose-designed for commercial, professional, and enterprise users. The new M3000 design is based on a common core platform using the Intel Atom processor, which drives both the new Vuzix M300 and M3000 devices. It includes a monocular display and onboard processor, 64 gig of built-in memory, camera streaming and recording features, and wireless connectivity capabilities.

Vuzix M3000 provides most of the features and capabilities of a modern smartphone in a hands-free wearable device. Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity makes it ideal to pair with Android and iOS devices or connect wirelessly with Wi-Fi to the Internet. An integrated head tracking and GPS system provides apps with the user's location, as well as the direction and angle of the wearer's current view, for the situational awareness needed for many Augmented Reality applications. Voice, button press, and touch pad with gesture controls, along with an exterior that's ruggedized against water, dust, and dirt, give the user the versatility to navigate and use the M3000 in almost any working environment. The device also offers flexibility through the inclusion of enhanced battery packs for long/high-intensity users and lightweight batteries for low/infrequent users. The M3000 will be introduced by summer 2017.

Trying Vuzix Blade 3000, the smartglasses for work and play
CES 2017: They want to pick up where Google Glass left off

    Friday
    January 6, 2017
    By Hugh Langley
    @hughlangley

Last year, veteran smartglasses maker Vuzix told us it was going to start moving towards the consumer space. Until now it's been primarily focused on enterprise, and done well from it. But the Blade 3000 smart sunglasses are for the 'prosumers' - the enthusiasts and early adopters - and hope to pick up where Google Glass left off.

I got to try the new glasses out, and before I'd even put them on the Blade 3000 specs outshone any smartglasses I'd tried before. Even with ODG's latest offering I'd feel silly leaving the house, but squint a little and you could confuse the Blades for a chunky pair of Oakleys.

Put them on and the right lens has a display projected onto it, but anyone looking from the other side will just see some reflected colours. Vuzix is working on binocular technology, which will eventually let it build glasses with two lens projectors, but having one is good enough for carrying out a range of tasks - and using augmented reality apps.

Put them on and you'll see a digital overlay on top of the world in front of you, whether that's displaying an email, a news page, directions to a destination, or even a speedometer. These are all things I got to see in a demo reel, but the possibilities stretch well beyond.

Interacting with the Blade can be done in two ways: things like responding to messages or speaking to Siri can be done with voice. Vuzix says it will let its software speak to smart phone assistants. The rest is done using a touchpad on the right arm that works very similarly to Google Glass. Speaking of which, Vuzix's specs are running Android 5.0, making it easy for developers to build and port apps.

The display is clear and bright too, which isn't something I can say for every other pair of smartglasses I've tried. I was able to watch a short clip of video, and could see myself getting lost in YouTube with these on. But while visibility is good, the display isn't obstructive when you're not focused on it, hopefully meaning they'll be safe for walking or even driving with.

We're told that casual use should get about eight hours of battery life, but "if you're out in the woods chasing Pokemon you're going to have to have a battery pack," said Travers.

So what else will we use them for? Well, for one thing there's a camera above the left lens that will capture photos and 1080p video, and Vuzix CEO Paul Travers says you'll be able to push captured footage straight to social media. I bring this up because it's exactly what Snapchat Specs were about. But for Vuzix's glasses, it's just one of potentially many others, including augmented reality.

Read next: 50 wearable tech gamechangers for 2017

The success of Pokemon Go was not down to new hardware but a new way of using it, and if Vuzix is going to get everyday people wearing its smart specs then the applications will need to be there. Vuzix says developers will be able to push standalone apps directly to the headset, or have phone apps interact with the glasses as an interface. Otherwise you're just going to be walking around with an email reader on your face, and I don't think people want to pay hundreds of dollars for that privilege.

We have the chicken-and-egg problem with AR where we need companies like Vuzix to get developers on board and showcasing just how fantastic smartglasses can be for users.

The Blade 3000 are probably the nicest looking, most comfortable pair of proper smartglasses I've tried - but they'll be nothing without great apps. They'll be available later this year, and Travers says they'll cost under $1000, with intentions to pair with glasses designers to get Vuzix's waveguide tech inside them.

Remember that Vuzix has essentially packed an entire phone into a pair of glasses, but we hope that it can get the price as low as possible, so developers and users can start getting this technology properly off the ground.
