Twitter's $8 ‘verification’ makes blue check marks mostly meaningless - The Washington Post

A site like Twitter started off as a FREE SPEECH platform. That means ANYONE can have their say as long as it is not in Violation of a Federal or State Law.

If Poster 1 doesn't like what Poster 2 says then Poster 1 can Ignore it or make their own reply, etc, etc, etc ....

But as has been BLATANTLY OBVIOUS with the way Twitter was run, is that IF the "management" of Twitter did not like or agree with what a Poster said then the "management" of Twitter would "censor"/"remove" that Poster from Twitter, which is then Twitter acting like a "Publisher" which is in direct contradiction of Section 230 ......

From what I've seen and read since Elon Musk has owned Twitter, is that he wants to return Twitter to that original Open, Free Speech Platform where it is of no consequence as to whether or not you are Left of Centre or Right of Centre, you are free to have your say with no "Censorial Consequences".

Personally I fail to see why anyone would have a problem with it ............ And if anyone did, then they are obviously free to post somewhere else and take no part on Twitter ......

Let's wait until the dust settles and see what happens, eh?

I'm all for more even content moderation of all social media, or they should die quickly and fade away into oblivion if they don't, going the way of the dinosaurs into extinction. Friendster, anyone?

Once the U.S. Government finally brings the hammer down on the CDA and its stipulation giving immunity to companies hosting websites with no responsibilities for what idiots using them post, it'll be the largest sea change in Internet history in my mind, and I'm counting the days until it happens.

Any moral and decent human being should wish for the same.

Deleted. Even though it was about the impact on SI, it still involves politics and so this is the wrong thread for it.

Hi TimF. Didn't know you were the mod on this thread, I thought Dmitry was.

Have had my suspicions though, so that's not surprising at all.

It's why taking screenshots for evidence and such is important in courts. Many things can be hidden otherwise. At least until the forensic teams show up from three-letter government agencies to find out the truth.

See you around...

I didn't (and can't, and wouldn't have if I could) delete your post. I deleted my reply (to the extent you can delete it, the post will still be there) and then explained why. That isn't in any way acting like a mod.

It's just as well. No need to tell me you've deleted a post I wasn't replying to in the first place. I was responding to SI Dmitry.

And I see I was was mistaken, my response to Dmitry is still there.

My apologies, sometimes we make mistakes in life, it's what you do about them that counts. :-)

I wasn't telling you, the post is public. And you have to replace the initial words with something anyway (although you might be able to make it blank, and could certainly make it just one character or something like "deleted").

The initial deleted reply was to you but then I saw Message 34009605 and so figured it didn't belong here even though it was relevant to SI.

Yes, a very common problem on SI forums since you can’t start a new non-reply post at SI from within a thread. You have to do that from the list of replies or otherwise outside it.

Causes many issues when trying to follow replies for a given topic when non-related replies are mixed in.

Been requested many times to be fixed over the years and never has been.
