Spicy Pickle Opens Two New Bread Garden Urban Cafes in Vancouver, Canada

DENVER, CO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/26/10 --

Spicy Pickle Franchising, Inc. (OTCBB: SPKL), operator of the fast casual restaurant chains Spicy Pickle in the U. S. and Bread Garden Urban Café in Canada, today announced the opening of two new Bread Garden Urban Cafes in downtown Vancouver. The two new restaurants along with the new location opened at 4314 Main Street at Whistler Mountain in the late summer bring the total to 15 franchised Bread Garden Urban Cafes operating in British Columbia

The two new restaurants and the Whistler Mountain location all have extremely high visibility to the Winter Olympics which will begin in Vancouver on February 12, 2010. The two new downtown locations are at 742 Granville, on the new pedestrian mall, and in the new Canadian Broadcasting Building at 700 Hamilton Street, both in the heart of Vancouver

"The downtown locations are in a very densely populated and highly trafficked area of Vancouver," said Marc Geman, CEO of Spicy Pickle Franchising, Inc. "And while we expect the Olympics to be a boost to sales, we are here for the long term and believe these new restaurants will perform very well after the Olympics given the population density and demographic that fits our customer. As to the CBC building, according to a story in the Vancouver Sun in early December 'the Bread Garden restaurant is renting space underneath the newsroom, which according to Mr. Geman provides a ready-made customer base of journalists and administrative workers.' Additionally, we are in the final stages of opening more Bread Gardens early this year end will make announcements about that shortly."

Mr. Geman said, "The Bread Garden purchase has proven to be a valuable asset of the company. Its value is increasing every day. We have a solid infrastructure developing in Vancouver and seasoned franchising personnel in Denver. We believe that we can continue to expand the Bread Garden Urban Café chain along with the Spicy Pickle chain in the United States even in this tougher economic environment. We are proving it with these openings and more to come."

Spicy Pickle is retracing its Friday gains.
It may not go back under .15, even under .16 would be surprising a little.
SPKL is not making profit yet, but DD will show that they're getting close as the number of franchises goes over 50.
Watch especially, the Canadian side. All current Garden cafes are in British Columbia and mostly visible to Winter Olympics visitors. Expansion may get East of the Rockies this year, but only in Alberta.
The .10 and under times are over, imo, and anything around .15 to .17 would be a bargain.
Dont take my word for it, do your due diligence.

Somehow, with all the recent progress, The Pickle is losing ground.
Wondering why. Speculating: a larger O/S?
It is now at .09 but there seems to be a good number of buys ready at .08 so this could be near its low.
The next quarter results could be a good indicator.

The Pickle at .05?
The idea is good. New openings should help but we hear that the O/S may be increasing and, perhaps, expenses way too high.
Early, this month SPKL reported the 6-month results. You be the judge:
"Spicy Pickle Franchising, Inc. (OTCBB: SPKL), fast casual restaurant operator and franchisor of its Spicy Pickle and Bread Garden Urban Café brands, announced today its results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2010.

Revenue for the second quarter totaled $1,215,441, almost even with the $1,223,858 in the year ago second quarter. Franchise fees and royalties for the quarter rose to $541,378 compared with $493,413 in the same quarter 2009. The company noted that a majority of its revenue is derived from its owned restaurants. In May, 2010, Spicy Pickle closed one of its restaurants and is looking for a site to relocate it. Therefore, the second quarter ended with six company owned stores operating versus seven at the end of the second quarter a year ago. For the six months, revenues amounted to $2,188,592 versus $2,227,453 for the same period a year earlier. Franchise fees and royalties for the six months were $895,832, up from $798,388 for the first half of 2009."

Spicy Pickle Franchising, Inc. (OTCBB: SPKL), fast casual restaurant operator and franchisor of its Spicy Pickle U.S. and BG Urban Café Canadian brands, today announced results for its third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2010.

For the third quarter, the first full quarter under new management, revenues increased to $1,132,631 from $954,188. For the nine months, revenues increased to $3,321,222 from $3,181,641. Revenues were higher due to increases in franchise fees, royalties and rebates which totaled $487,375 for the quarter vs $295,979 in the year ago quarter, and $1,383,206 for the nine months, up from $1,094,367 for the nine months the year before.

The loss from operations totaled $810,616 for the quarter compared with $608,190 for the year ago quarter and $1,851,663 for the nine months vs $1,570,875 for the nine months of 2009.

"Approximately $350,000 in expenses for the quarter was either non-cash or severance related and we have increased our investments in re-branding the Spicy Pickle and Urban Cafés concepts. Additionally, we have increased our advertising spending for both brands and have invested in strengthening our management team and board of directors," reported CEO Mark Laramie.

"Most importantly, we are now seeing increased restaurant average weekly sales. Furthermore, we are beginning to experience improved unit level economics as a result of our new supply chain. However, company owned store revenue has been reduced due to closing one of our company owned restaurants pending relocation. Thus, we are now operating six rather than seven company owned units. A full discussion is included in our current 10Q report and we encourage interested parties to review it," said Mr. Laramie.

The company had total assets of $5.3 million at September 30, 2010, versus $5.8 million at the same time a year ago. Current assets amounted to $1.13 million versus current liabilities of $1.45 million of which the $350,000 in deferred franchise revenue is a non-cash obligation. The company reported it has borrowed about $1 million on its $2 million line of credit.

Outlook:

"We are still somewhat dependent on the economy and consumer spending, but we believe we have accomplished a great deal in a short time. We believe that through the marketing and re-branding investments we are making, and will continue to make, we are positioning both of our brands for future growth and development. We are optimistic 2011 will be a very active year in terms of franchisee development activities," concluded Laramie.

From its recent press release:
"...The company also reported it has taken several actions to improve its guests' experiences in the Spicy Pickle restaurants. It has increased the meat amount in all of its sandwiches; is now serving orders on upscale white plates instead of traditional plastic baskets; and is introducing a new, exclusive bread formulation in its stores. In addition, bread will now be baked fresh daily in all stores instead of at night in its commissary, as it was previously done for half of its stores. In the BG Urban Café brand group, the company reported that four of its restaurants have now been rebranded under that new name and format, and they are on schedule to have all stores converted by April 2011..."

So far, the share price seems to indicate problems. Is the Pickle diluting? Perhaps not enough franchises to expect positive revenues soon?

SPKL Great PR on Friday. They have extremely good management and appear to be doing the right things. This could be a good one. I'm long.
