The CDG's CDMA subscriber numbers for the past 12 years:
cdg.org
The GSM Association has a time line of GSM development that provides some idea of the magnitude of GSM's growth (I can't find anything more detailed that's available free):
gsmworld.com
As I said before, given CDMA's technical advantages, CDMA should have trounced GSM by now.
There is an interview of Mr. Perry LaForge of the CDG on YouTube where he's asked about W-CDMA. His answer, or non-answer I should say, is pretty funny (at least to me). The W-CDMA question starts at time 4:55

GSM's rate of growth is declining, as 3GSM's (i.e.CDMA)is markedly increasing.Qualcomm displaced TI as the world's largest supplier of wireless chipsets, because CDMA flavours combined with legacy GSM/GPRS/EDGE are the hot spot of the market. And next comes LTE, based on Flarion/Qualcomm OFDMA, and Airgo/Qualcomm MIMO.Royalties and chipset sales, in single and multi-mode OFDMA products, will continue stellar growth for decades to come. They make real money. That's how they have accumulated over $15.5 billion dollars, and no debt.Margins are the envy of the tech world. Many of us have a sub-zero cost basis, now that dividends are rolling in every quarter, and increasing every year. Sorry you placed some bad bets on other, now lame, horses. You can work it through. |

Hahahaaaaaaaa. That's a good one. Sure it's declining. When you add 500 million new subscribers on a base of 3 billion subscribers that's a lower growth rate than adding 500 million new subscribers on a base of 2.5 billion subscribers. 16.67% growth versus 20% growth. I think that's a problem the CDMA industry wish it had. To add insult to injury, CDMA's growth rate has been declining the past three years. This past year ending March 2009, as I mentioned before elsewhere, CDMA added only 29 million new subscribers.
You, like other fans of Qualcomm, have become beguiled by the technology, forgetting it takes boots on the ground to make this all happen. Again, I ask all Qualcomm supporters, who will convert existing GSM infrastructure to 3G CDMA? Do people realistically expect Ericsson, the longtime implacable enemy of CDMA, to do it? Do they expect Motorola to do it? Somebody has to do it. Who will it be?
Is Qualcomm profitable? Yes it is. But that's not the issue. The issue is Qualcomm's valuation is predicated on the assumption the entire digital wireless world will be CDMA in one form or another. The current reality with regard to infrastructure suppliers inexorably leads to a very different outcome.
Having competition is a good thing. But the way things are going, CDMA will be marginalized as an inconsequential technology in the marketplace if changes aren't made -- and made soon. |

To: henry8 who wrote (52) | 8/9/2009 1:03:16 PM | From: henry8 | | | What amazes me (and should amaze any impartial observer) is how there has not been a scintilla of criticism of Paul Jacobs and the rest of Qualcomm management in the media for not preventing Ericsson from acquiring Nortel's CDMA assets.
Naturally, there is a reluctance to criticize Paul Jacobs because the Jacobs family drove the development of CDMA. But this decision to do nothing about Nortel's CDMA assets jeopardizes all the work done on CDMA. When Nortel was still around at least there was one strong, independent CDMA infrastructure supporter in the marketplace. Now there are none. This is a real turning point for CDMA.
I can't even imagine how Ericsson management is feeling about this acquisition. |

By not doing so, everything you say can and should be considered as horse crap...

LMAO...So, you are claiming to be an impartial observer?
Thanks for the laugh...LMAOAYIA

Ever heard of UTMS? GSM wasn't going to be data competitive without a network change and that change was to W-CDMA/UTMS...this allowed GSM providers the ability to be competitive with existing CDMA providers (who had faster data networks. CDMA has done and continues to do very well...otherwise why would Nokia sign a 15 year deal with Qualcomm? On the forfront Qualcomm is very much involve with 4G.....you know LTE? |
