People universally resent that kind of treatment from anyone. And just as we are now reaping what we sowed long ago, so will France.
As to the issue of Bush doing damage, there is an old (and historically accurate?) story about a Caliph and his Vizier walking in the garden. They were having a good time and saw a good looking apple. So the Caliph asks the Vizier to pick it. The Vizier climbs on top of Caliph's shoulders, steps on his head to reach the apple, and then they both share and enjoy it. They call the gardener to appreciate his good work. The gardener, belonging to the Vizier's clan, asks for written document attesting that he has no relations to that clan. This was a surprising request but they had promised to make him happy and give it to him. Few years later the Caliph orders the massacre of every member of Vizier's clan. The gardener is spared but brought to the Caliph for questioning. When asked how he knew this would happen even before the Caliph did, he answered, "a fountain that reaches its peak topples over. I knew that Vizier could never go any higher after being allowed to step over his majesty's head".
As I see it, after reading various quotes from PNAC, one can't really get any higher than feeling comfortable to claim we can do whatever we want and even in matters that do not concern US, we will interfere to prevent anyone getting stronger than what they already are. So I see this as the beginning of the end, no matter how the war goes.

Presumably it would temper their aggressiveness. However, evidence of WMD's WILL be found and the scenario you present will not come up. It has to be this way (one way or another) and I'm enough of a realist not to get bent out of shape about it. Some things just are. |

If the UN had any integrity left, which it doesn't, it would publicly condemn these tactics.
1) Comments by such institutions never occur within hours after an event.
2) The UN hasn't commented on events like the following one, too:
U.S. Forces Kill Seven Iraqi Women, Kids story.news.yahoo.com
3) HIGH COMMISSIONER REPEATS CALL ON PARTIES IN IRAQ TO RESPECT HUMAN RIGHTS, PROTECT CIVILIANS un.org
4) If you belong to the people who believe that the UN has a negative bias towards the USA and Israel here is a recent counter example:

Huh? That destroys his entire argument.
What he is saying is that there is a law above international law which can justify actions. But this higher law isn't written down anywhere. So, where does it come from, and what are its standards, and how can he say Bush isn't following it?
He has destroyed his whole premise. |

I took it from the comments that our Political Ambassadors don't feel they have to be subservient to the Regional Specialists at State. The comment came up that our Diplomatic corps is an 18th Century setup. |

LOL! You know, now that I think about it, that's pretty much true for me too.
It is a large country just north of you and goes from sea to sea much as your country does (that would be the USA bbm). It has 32 million people and is about 1/10 th the population of the USA (that would be where you live bbm). The people are very nice and ice fish most of their lives. Just below you bbm, that would be south on a compass, there is a country that adjoins the USA and its called Mexico. |
