>> Even a piss-pot state like Palestine is referred to as "dawlat falestiin" "The State of Palestine". "wilaaya" in the singular is used for a local state, as far as I know. Certainly.

Not quite, though it could be so. "dawlat" means "government of" (as in the official state). "Wilaayat" on the other hand often means "land of" or "country of".

Montana and Colorado were just placed on Bush side. NM and OH is all we need. OH is 80% complete with Cuyahoga county 80% complete. Not too much more waiting for this one to be official.

Wilayat probably means region or state in muslim terminology. For example, Algeria uses Wilayat for its provinces. Sudan also uses Wilayat for 'states'.

This is one item in the UBL speech the US MSM edited out. In the Al-Jazeera english translation, UBL was clearly warning each state in the US to back off --- a divide and conquer strategy.

As I said, it can mean either of the two meanings. I'd have to listen to the tape in Arabic to tell you.

It could mean land/region in theory, but even in Saudi Arabia and Yemen (UBL's old haunts), Wilayat means a province/municipality of the country.

Except that OBL likes to be poetic in his speeches. In modern Arabic, often Wilayat means as you have translated it. But using the word in its original meaning is not so strange, depending on the context.

Bush picks up Alaska for 3 more votes - 249 and counting. Ohio and New Mexico should be ready shortly. Just regained the lead in Iowa. 88% exit poll status in Ohio. New Mexico is remaining very strong. Tick tock...

OHIO, Iowa, and New Mexico should all go with Bush. I can not believe how much the polls misled people to think that Kerry could pass himself off as a leader to the Midwest and Southeast. This race only looks close at the end. This election was over at about 9 pm if they would have made the appropriate forecasts. That doesn't sell broadcasting time, so I will give them a break. Guess I might turn on the tube to listen to Bush's acceptance speech. Then again...<g>
