Not gun shy - it is deliberate deception. They want everyone glued to the TV until the bitter end. If they release the numbers from OH and FL, everyone would go to sleep. Worst case scenario, Bush will lose MI, WI, MN, IA, NV, WA, OR. Bush will win everything else except for NH. If memory serves correct, NH split their EV votes last election, so they may do the same again. Not sure about Hawaii, but Alaska will go with Bush. Bush is doing very well in California. OOPs- FL just went to Bush and Washington went to Gore 234 - 199. All Bush has to do is win OH, NM, and CO to carry 272 EV's. Add in Montana for icing on the cake. Alaska will help too.

Not quite, though it could be so. "dawlat" means "government of" (as in the official state). "Wilaayat" on the other hand often means "land of" or "country of".

Wilayat probably means region or state in muslim terminology. For example, Algeria uses Wilayat for its provinces. Sudan also uses Wilayat for 'states'. countrystudies.us encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com This is one item in the UBL speech the US MSM edited out. In the Al-Jazeera english translation, UBL was clearly warning each state in the US to back off --- a divide and conquer strategy.

It could mean land/region in theory, but even in Saudi Arabia and Yemen (UBL's old haunts), Wilayat means a province/municipality of the country.

Except that OBL likes to be poetic in his speeches. In modern Arabic, often Wilayat means as you have translated it. But using the word in its original meaning is not so strange, depending on the context.
