We finished our rewatching adventure of "Inspector George Gently," now high in the canon of British detective shows for me despite an odd final episode that gave in way too much to melodrama.

If I had a loved one hurt in a mysterious crime, he's the guy I would want on the case. Plus he only yells when it's really required unlike most senior UK police types in every other show out there.

Now we'll give "Vera" a try since we never got into it much. First episode was good but complicated. I'll have to pay more attention next time.

We've started 'The Breakthrough' on Netflix, a Swedish murder mystery with the brooding, understated
head detective starting on the case... .and a hint about who the murderer might be.

We wanted to like "Bad Sisters" but realized early in episode 3 that we really didn't like anyone on the show. Makes it hard.

Had the same problem with the one episode of "Slow Horses."

Slow Horses is a sketchy version of the books, which are fairly dense and very British.
Having read the books, increased my appreciation of the TV series, but it is an acquired taste.
Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas are quite good at filling the shoes of the characters in the book.
We liked season one of Bad Sisters, with season two the farcical went off the rails.

Yes, it's much easier to read about irritating characters than to have to experience them viscerally, especially when I assume that the showrunners play that up to keep the show "edgy" and all that.

The Crow Girl

The Crow Girl is a new crime series filmed in Bristol, England, There were things I really liked about it, particularly some of the acting and the soundtrack, but early on I started thinking to myself that there was way too much plot for a six episode series, and I was right. The plot lines overrun each other, making it hard to keep things straight, and rather than resolving even one of the plot lines, the last episode ended with the caption “To be continued”. At best, I can give it a lukewarm recommendation if you like atmospheric productions. That said, I will probably watch Season 2 just to find out what happens.

I made it through 40 minutes of the movie "Napoleon" on Apple TV before giving up. The acting was wooden, the script was worse, and director Ridley Scott, I can't figure out what the hell he was trying to do. This was a complete embarrassment. We know that Joaquin Phoenix is a solid actor from many other roles including Scott movies. This is on the director for putting such dreck on screen.

If Scott had made a movie with cannons firing and things blowing up for 2 hours, that might have been watchable. But this clearly was not. He has seriously lost his touch with non-action scenes.

I also bailed on the Apple TV original series"Foundation." I first read the novels many decades ago, and I remembered them being much more cerebral than this. That is just Asimov's style. I guess TV showrunners need to focus on sex and violence to keep the audience's attention. This just got boring.

A few minutes into the second episode of "Slow Horses" produced that same "I really don't like anyone on screen here" feeling as "Bad Sisters."

Ironic since I think "Manhunt" is one of the most underrated series in a long while. Comparable to "Turn: Washington's Spies" a while back.

We made it through the entire Napoleon movie... it was like watching a slow-rolling disaster from beginning to end. I'm afraid Scott is losing it.

We liked Foundation, and thought it actually was an improvement over the novels...
some of the difference is the tolerance for wooden writing back in the peak of Asimov's career.
Slow Horses is an acquired taste.
Not watching Severance until the whole series has loaded.

I grew up on a steady diet of Asimov and Clarke novels. I guess I didn't have enough literary discernment to know that I wasn't supposed to enjoy them.

The TV series had the evil, violent emperor, our sexy young heroes, lots of space special effects, etc. I'd rather go back and reread the trilogy sometime.

I once taught "The Gods Themselves" for fun. Asimov had taken the criticism to heart that he never wrote about sex or aliens, so he did that time in a lighthearted way.

The TV version of Foundation was just too far away from what I recalled and had visualized before.
