Wall Street is not responding favorably to yesterday's earnings announcement. However, the drop in sales from year to year must be tempered by the fact that AATT had a difficult transition to perform. The company was shifting from one main customer, Intel, to many customers, the computer manufacturers. IMHO, the company has done very well in completing that transition and is now favorably positioned for future quarters. In addition, the company's extremely low stock price has discounted the company's current slowdown.|
I think the stock price is also being hurt by the CEO's very cautious comments about future quarters. We shall see what happens in the conference call.

BancBoston Robertson Stephens Upgrades AATT to a Buy Rating|
SAN FRANCISCO, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by BancBoston Robertson Stephens, a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers, CRD number 41271:
BancBoston Robertson Stephens managing director and senior semiconductor equipment analyst Sue Billat today upgraded Aavid Thermal Technologies (Nasdaq: AATT) to a Buy rating from a Long-Term Attractive.
"We are raising our rating on Aavid from Long-Term Attractive to Buy, following first quarter results that exceeded our expectations," said Billat. "We are raising our 1999 earnings per share estimate to $1.29 from $1.25.
"In our view, the computer and networking segment of Aavid Thermal Product's (ATP) business is transitioning to a more unit volume vs. ASP driven model, especially in the PC arena. We believe that this is being increasingly driven by the growth of the Internet and e-commerce vs. just growth in the stand-alone desktop market. This trend is broadening ATP's potential application to include not only thermal solutions for microprocessors but also for graphics, video, and network cards, and routers and switches. Further, it is quite likely, in our view, that the sub-$1,000 PC will have a higher thermal content than traditional desktops," said Billat.

Aavid Expands Heat Sink Offerings for Sub-$1000 PCs|
CONCORD, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1999--
Thermal Management Solutions Available For Cooling PC
Applications Using AMD, Cyrix, IDT and Rise Technology CPUs; and
Celeron(R) CPUs INSEPP and PPGA Package
Aavid Thermal Products, Inc. (Nasdaq:AATT), the world's leader in providing thermal management solutions for power and digital electronics announces the expansion of its family of thermal solutions for sub-$1000 PCs. Designed for maximum cooling performance in minimal configurations, Aavid's new thermal solutions feature cross-cut cooling fins that allow omni-directional airflow and fans that meet and exceed industry requirements for performance, cost, reliability, and noise.
"This fast growing segment of the PC industry requires a no-nonsense approach to cooling," says Aavid Marketing Manager Christopher Chapman. "Heat sinks must work for the entire PC product range and must be quick and inexpensive to assemble.
"With an ongoing focus on reducing OEM manufacturing costs throughout our manufacturing facilities worldwide," Chapman continued, "Aavid continues to support this demanding market with products that have met widespread customer acceptance."
Craig Johnston, VP of Aavid Thermal Products sister company, Applied Thermal Technologies, says, "Due to time-to-market pressures, the simplest thermal solution is a fan heat sink. Customers using low cost third party PC components that restrict air-flow, or have system upgrades pushed beyond the available system cooling capacity, find Aavid's new active fan heat sinks provide significant cooling. Our system-level CFD modeling shows that if these types of processors have sufficient air flow in the system, many OEMs will be able to utilize passive, omni-directional heat sinks to provide adequate cooling for the processor at a very low cost."
The newest additions to Aavid's products features passive and fan heat sinks (Aavid's part number 028098 and 030492 respectively) for Intel's Celeron CPU in an SEPP package, as well as passive and fan heat sinks (Aavid's part number 030685 and 030882 respectively) for the Celeron in a 370PPGA package. Finally, for all other CPU's including products from AMD, Cyrix, IDT, and Rise Technology, Aavid is also announcing both passive and fan heat sinks (Aavid part numbers 030867 and 030882 respectively).
For applications using the Celeron with Slot 1 connectors, Aavid's passive heat sink uses Intel's recommended metal clip (sold separately as Aavid part number 028099). Aavid's new fan heat sink features a method of attachment that does not require tools for assembly. Aavid supplies the clip with the fan heat sink as a single unit along with pre-applied interface material. For application using the Celeron PPGA 370 chip, Aavid's passive solution requires a clip (sold separately as Aavid part number 022938). Aavid's active solution is its top-of-the-line fan heat sink and meets performance requirements for the fastest Celeron chips in the PPGA package.
In addition to its fan heat sink for socketed CPU's including AMD and Cyrix, Aavid's passive heat sink features the maximum surface area possible and includes a ZIF socket clip and phase change interface material pre-applied for quick assembly.
