Verizon raises profit forecast, loses more
phone subscribers...

(Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc on Tuesday raised its 2019 profit forecast and beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit as it focuses on cost cuts, but the U.S. wireless carrier lost more phone subscribers than analysts had expected.

Verizon said it now expects low single-digit percentage growth in adjusted profit, after previously saying that its 2019 profit would be similar to what it reported a year earlier.

Verizon Chief Financial Officer Matt Ellis said profit margins in the carrier’s core wireless business was pressured by accounting changes during the first quarter. Without the items, “the business performed really well,” Ellis said in an interview.

Jonathan Chaplin, an analyst with New Street Research, described the results as mixed, as Verizon’s raised guidance seemed to be “driven entirely by below-the-line items.”

Shares of Verizon were down 2.2 percent at $57.09 in morning trading.

The company said it lost a net 44,000 phone subscribers who pay a monthly bill in the first quarter, which was characterized by few big price-cut promotions. Analysts had expected a net loss of 25,000 subscribers, according to research firm FactSet.

Verizon launched its 5G mobile network in two cities in the United States last month at an additional cost of $10 for customers with existing unlimited plans. It plans to spend $17 billion to $18 billion this year to build its network.

Net income attributable to the company rose to $5.03 billion, or $1.22 per share, in the first quarter ended March 31 from $4.55 billion, or $1.11 per share, a year earlier.

On an adjusted basis, Verizon earned $1.20 per share, beating analysts’ estimates of $1.17, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Revenue for Verizon Media Group, which was formerly called Oath and includes the Yahoo and AOL media brands, was $1.8 billion during the quarter, a decline from the previous year as the company earned less revenue from desktop advertising.

The company lost a net 53,000 Fios video customers during the quarter, as viewers continue to shift to cheaper streaming services. Analysts had expected it to lose just 40,000 video customers, according to FactSet.

Verizon said Tuesday it was partnering with Google to bring YouTube TV, a live and on-demand video streaming service, to its customers.

Verizon added 52,000 Fios internet customers during the quarter.

Total operating revenue rose about 1 percent to $32.13 billion during the quarter, falling slightly short of analysts’ estimates of $32.16 billion....

Goldman Sachs: Apple's iPhone sales this year will disappoint, causing stock decline...

Goldman Sachs underscored its lukewarm thesis on Apple AAPL and said it believes the company will ship fewer iPhones in late 2019 than the 67 million the rest of Wall Street expects.

Analyst Rod Hall reiterated his neutral rating Tuesday, telling clients that it's increasingly likely that Apple falls short of unit sales and average selling price estimates later this year.

"We believe consensus is assuming a steep recovery in China, with little change in demand trajectory for other [geographies]," Hall told clients in a note. "We note that iPhone shipments in the U.S. and Japan cycled up in CY18 [calendar year 2018], with U.S. shipments growing 8% year over year in CY18."

"A better consumer environment for the most part of 2018 combined with compelling products later in the year helped drive iPhone growth in these regions," he added. "For CY19, however, we note that U.S. consumer sentiment is down year over year and an end to subsidies in Japan could create volatility."

Apple shares were slightly higher in premarket trading Wednesday. The equity is up more than 27% over the last 12 months to $207.48 a share through Tuesday.

Goldman Sachs increased its price target on Apple to $182 on Wednesday, which still represents a 12% decline from here.

Apple has in recent years incorporated more luxurious features in its phone production, hoping to combat a decelerating replacement cycle with a higher average selling price (ASP). New generations include facial recognition and wireless charging, more storage capacity and larger screens.

The tactic has had mixed success across the globe. iPhone shipments in France, the United Kingdom and Spain declined 12%, 11% and 3% respectively in 2018 despite the deluxe offerings. Units fell 23% year over year in China over the same period, including a 44% year over year decline in the fourth quarter, Goldman's Hall added.

"It is too early to assume a recovery on units in China to pre-2018 levels given increasing local brand traction and ongoing consumer weakness that may suggest a "new normal" level of demand for the country," Hall wrote.

The analyst estimates 61 million iPhone sales in the December 2019 quarter, 8% below FactSet consensus. His average selling price estimate for fourth-quarter 2019 is $806, or 4% above consensus....

Verizon beats profit estimates as monthly phone subscribers jump...

(Reuters) - Verizon Communications Inc on Thursday beat second-quarter profit estimates as the largest U.S. mobile carrier added far more net monthly phone subscribers than expected.

Shares of the Dow component rose 1.1% before the bell after the company said it added a net 245,000 phone subscribers during the quarter. Analysts were expecting it to add 163,000 subscribers, according to research firm FactSet.

Analysts pay attention to postpaid customers, or those with a recurring bill, because they are more valuable to carriers and tend to remain with the company longer than prepaid customers.

The earnings announcement comes about a week after the approval from the U.S. Justice Department on the merger between T-Mobile USA and Sprint. As part of the approval, T-Mobile agreed to divest Sprint’s prepaid businesses including Boost Mobile and other assets to Dish Network Corp to build out a viable fourth carrier in a couple years.

Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint control more than 98% of the U.S. wireless market and have wireless service revenues of more than $160 billion.

T-Mobile and Sprint together have more than 135 million customers, while Verizon and AT&T control two-thirds of the total U.S. wireless market.

Verizon has put heavy focus on deploying 5G nationwide, with a goal to expand to more than 30 U.S. cities in 2019. But while Verizon is leading the charge to test its 5G services, industry analysts say the higher-speed networks are unlikely to be widely available until the middle of the next decade.

Verizon’s net income fell to $4.07 billion, or 95 cents per share, in the second quarter ended June 30 from $4.25 billion, or $1 per share, a year earlier.

On an adjusted basis, Verizon earned $1.23 per share, beating analyst average estimate of $1.20 per share, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Total operating revenue fell 0.4% to $32.1 billion and missed expectations of $32.41 billion. Revenue from Verizon’s media unit alone was $1.8 billion, down 2.9% from a year earlier....
