Can somebody bring me up to date on the Fuel Cell business that UTX owns? It is a real hot business right now and I wonder what UTX is doing about it. FCEL and DiamlerChrysler just installed a Fuel Cell plant that runs a hospital in Germany.

FCEL, PLUG, etc are getting a lot of stock appreciation just due to the "story" of Fuel Cells.

I would hate to think that UTX winds up sitting on its ass and doing nothing with a great product. You don't hear UTX mentioned when Fuel Cell talk is in the news and it seems to me that we should.

Anybody know anything about UTX plans in the Fuel Cell business?

IFC's Sale Of PC25(TM) Power Plant To Woking, England, Gives United Kingdom Its First Fuel Cell

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., and WOKING, England, Sep 4, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- International Fuel Cells, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), today announced the sale of a fuel cell system that will power a recreational center in Woking, England and be the first commercial fuel cell operating in the United Kingdom.
Woking, a community of 93,000 people, is located 25 miles southwest of London. The 200-kilowatt PC25 system will be installed at Woking Park and will provide electricity and heat for the Pool in the Park recreational center as well as electricity to light the park. In the summer, the heat will be used to meet the recreational center's air conditioning, cooling and dehumidification requirements via heat-fired absorption cooling. The PC25 produces 900,000 Btus of heat.

"The installation in Woking is yet another milestone for IFC and the PC25 power plant," said IFC President William Miller. "PC25s now provide clean, efficient and reliable energy in 17 countries on six continents, further demonstrating its capabilities and IFC's leadership in the fuel cell industry."

The PC25 is part of a larger, combined heat and power system that will include a 1.35 megawatt reciprocating engine and solar photovoltaic cells, which will be provided by other vendors.

"Installing a fuel cell is a logical part of our ongoing efforts to promote and use sustainable energy sources," said Allan Jones MBE, Energy Services Manager. "We are proud to be the first site in the United Kingdom to employ fuel cell technology in everyday use."

Jones said that Woking Borough Council is the only local authority in the U.K. to supply electricity directly to customers on private wire networks, which enable the council to make better use of green technologies such as fuel cells by maximizing the true value of green electricity rather than selling the electricity to the grid at a far lower price.

Jones said that this innovative feature also enables the council to continue to supply electricity as well as heat and cooling in island generation mode at full load in the event of a failure of the national grid, thus providing further security of supply to customers.

Jones said this is only possible on private wire networks and this project will be the first example of a fuel cell operating as part of such a system.

The council intends to make the fuel cell visible to the public and to provide information for visitors on how the power plant operates. The fuel cell system is scheduled to begin operating by year-end.

The council this year became the first local authority ever to win Britain's most coveted commercial award, the Queen's Award for Enterprise, in recognition of its groundbreaking approach to local sustainable community energy systems and the practical steps it is taking locally to tackle global warming.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen, or hydrogen-rich fuel, and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water. Fuel cells operate without combustion, making them almost pollution-free. While a traditional generating system produces as much as 25 pounds of pollutants to generate 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, the PC25 power plant produces less than an ounce. IFC has manufactured the PC25 power plant since 1991 and has delivered more than 220 units.

MacRandy, I'm at UTX owner for some time, primarily for the fuel cell interest. The commercial aircraft part is in deep doop for the near-term. Friends in the know say P&W isn't particularly well run to begin with. However, the IFC/UTC Fuel Cell part of the biz is positioned to play in stationary and mobile markets, and they intend to be a competitive #2 in the auto segment as that starts to grow. IFC Powered Vehicle Scores Best in Class in Key Tests at Michelin Bibendum
SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. and LAS VEGAS, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- A Hyundai Santa Fe powered by International Fuel Cells (IFC) scored best in class in two key performance tests at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum, an annual event where new automotive technologies are evaluated by independent judges.

The vehicle, which is powered by an IFC 75-kilowatt ambient-pressure proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, scored an ``A'' in noise and a ``B'' in energy efficiency. Both were the highest grades given to fuel cell cars entered in those categories

``These high marks for noise and efficiency from an independent panel demonstrate the superior performance of IFC's proprietary ambient pressure design,'' said William Miller, president of IFC, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX - news).

Put simply, IFC's ambient-pressure design better manages the water produced by a fuel cell than traditional pressurized fuel cell designs. The result is a fuel cell system that is quieter, significantly more fuel efficient and easier to install into a vehicle.

The fuel cell system installed in the Hyundai Santa Fe does not encroach at all on the vehicle's passenger or cargo space.

A total of six hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles were entered in the Michelin event, held in Los Angeles and Las Vegas this past weekend. Other car makers who entered fuel cell cars into the event were Ford, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Toyota and Honda.

New York Power Authority to Install Eight UTC Fuel Cells PC25(TM) Power Plants at New York City Locations
SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- UTC Fuel Cells, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX - news), today announced the sale of eight PC25(TM) fuel cell power plants to the New York Power Authority (NYPA). The sale is one of UTC Fuel Cells' largest commercial orders ever.

The 200-kilowatt PC25 units will produce power for, and reduce emissions from, four wastewater treatment plants in New York City. Waste gas produced in the water treatment process will fuel the power plant.

``The New York Power Authority continues to be a leader in the adoption of fuel cells to provide clean, reliable and efficient power for customers,'' said William T. Miller, president of UTC Fuel Cells, formerly known as International Fuel Cells. ``This most recent sale caps our best year ever for commercial sales of PC25 power plants in the U.S., and we are optimistic for another strong year in 2002.''

During 2001, UTC Fuel Cells installed the first fuel cell power plants ever in South America, China and the United Kingdom, and installed the world's largest fuel cell system, a 1.2- megawatt micro grid, at a Connecticut state facility in Middletown.

The PC25 is the world's only commercially available fuel cell system. A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat and water. Because hydrogen is often not readily available, the PC25 uses a fuel processor to convert hydrocarbon fuels, typically natural gas, into a hydrogen-rich stream that is fed into the fuel cell.

The PC25 is virtually pollution free. While a traditional generating system produces as much as 25 pounds of pollutants to generate 1,000 kilowatt- hours of electricity, the PC25 power plant produces less than an ounce.

NYPA plans to install the units at wastewater treatment plants in Brooklyn, Staten Island, Bronx and Queens. The units will run off anaerobic digester gas, a byproduct of the treatment process that would otherwise be burned, releasing pollution into the air.

With the addition of these eight units, a total of 17 PC25 power plants will be supplying electricity for New York City area facilities. Other installations include the police station in Manhattan's Central Park; North Central Bronx Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital on Staten Island and the Conde Nast building at 4 Times Square.

UTC Fuel Cells has manufactured the PC25 power plant since 1991 and has delivered more than 235 of them to customers in 19 countries on five continents. Other applications range from a major postal facility in Alaska to beer breweries in Japan.

Besides generating 200 kilowatts of electricity the PC25 provides more than 900,000 BTUs of heat per hour that can be used for space heating, domestic hot water heating, or absorption chilling and air conditioning.

Thanks for the summary...

I understand that UTX and HON will also benefit greatly from the LMT award as secondary contractors.

From a TA standpoint, the uptrend has been in an amazingly tight channel, only broken for the first time on Friday. We may be in for a pullback. I'm wondering whether to "listen" to the charts or hang in for the long term.....

Is United Technologies Underappreciated?

Despite a stable of well-known brands, it seems to me that United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) hasn't always gotten its due in the market. Whether that's because many of this conglomerate's businesses are cyclical, because the company doesn't have a flashy CEO, or because the company doesn't really sell to retail consumers, I really don't know. But what I do know is that the company is doing all right these days.

Second-quarter results were solid, if a bit confusing. Revenue rose 16% as reported, with 6% of that revenue labeled as "organic" and 8% coming from acquisitions. Earnings are where that "a bit confusing" part comes in to play. Various benefits, restructurings, and other items take a bit of work to disentangle. But when it's all said and done, adjusted earnings grew by about 16% for the quarter.

Of the individual operating units, all but one posted double-digit operating profit growth. That one was the Carrier unit, where a sluggish residential HVAC market hurt results. So although there was strength in the truck/trailer business, overall operating profits at Carrier slipped by 2%.

The standout grower for the quarter was the company's relatively new fire and security business. Reported revenue climbed 64%, while operating profit rose 69%. Just looking at the numbers, it appears that United Technology has some opportunity to improve margins here and continue to drive good profit growth.

Other United Technologies businesses, including Otis, Pratt, Sikorsky, and Hamilton, all did relatively well for the period, with the first three posting 16% growth in operating profits.

Although I wouldn't describe free cash flow growth as torrid, the company is still growing its free cash flow, and it's doing so while it makes good-sized voluntary pension contributions. This allowed the company to spend $260 million on buybacks in the second quarter, and more repurchases seem likely.

I realize that companies such as General Electric (NYSE: GE), 3M (NYSE: MMM), Tyco (NYSE: TYC), and Honeywell (NYSE: HON) aren't one-to-one comparables with United Technologies, but there are shared similarities. And at least in terms of P/E multiples, United Technologies appears to be a bit of a laggard comparatively.

I'm not generally attracted to these giants of the investment playground, but I do think United Technologies might be worth a look. As commercial construction and aviation recover, the company should be poised for some solid growth.

United Tech. upgraded on valuation, earns outlook

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- United Technologies (UTX) was upgraded to buy from neutral at Banc of America citing attractive valuation and potential upside to earnings expectations. Analyst Don MacDougall also raised his 12-month stock price target to $60 from $55 and his 2005 earnings estimate to $3.10 a share from $3.03. MacDougall said aerospace fundamentals remain strong, and while the company's Carrier business posted disappointing quarterly results, he expects results for the second half of the year to be strong.

Sikorsky Awarded $3.0B Development Contract For Marine Corps CH-53K Heavy-Lift Helicopter

STRATFORD, Conn., April 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sikorsky Aircraft announced today that it was awarded a $3.0 billion System Development and Demonstration (SDD) contract for the United States Marine Corps CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter. Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Under the terms of the SDD contract, Sikorsky will oversee aircraft development, systems integration, test article production and test and evaluation activities on a sole source basis. The SDD contract could lead to the production of 156 CH-53K aircraft to replace roughly an equal number of CH-53E SUPER STALLIONs(TM) in the Marine Corps' current inventory. Development money and production quantities are determined year-by-year over the life of the program based on funding allocations set by Congress and Pentagon acquisition priorities.

SDD engineering and program administration activity will be centered at Sikorsky's Stratford facility and begin immediately.

"For more than two decades the Sikorsky CH-53E SUPER STALLION has been the most capable marinized heavy-lift helicopter in the world. The new CH-53K promises a marked improvement in payload, range, and 'hot-high' capabilities and it will be the only aircraft equipped the meet the Marine Corps' unique and demanding requirements. We thank the Marine Corps for showing confidence in Sikorsky to develop and build a new aircraft that is vital to the nation and our armed forces," Sikorsky President Jeffrey Pino said.

The three-engine Sikorsky CH-53E SUPER STALLION is the largest, most powerful marinized helicopter in the world. It is deployed from Marine Corps amphibious assault ships to transport personnel and equipment, and to carry external (sling) loads.

Sikorsky is currently conducting competitions to select suppliers for the CH-53K major sub-systems, including the avionics management system and the engine. Sub-system supplier selection is scheduled to finish later in 2006.

The CH-53K will maintain virtually the same footprint as the CH-53E, but will nearly double the payload to 27,000 pounds over 110 nautical miles under "hot high" ambient conditions. The CH-53K's maximum gross weight will increase to 84,700 pounds versus 73,000 pounds for the CH-53E.

The upgrades slated for the CH-53K include: joint interoperable glass cockpit fly-by-wire flight controls; high-efficiency rotor blade with anhedral tip; low-maintenance elastomeric rotorhead; gross weight expansion; upgraded engine system; cargo rail locking system; external cargo handling improvements and survivability enhancements; and reduced operation and support costs.
