PLNS was going strong in Supercomm in Atlanta. In fact, the whole show was going strong. For the first time in years there were customers on the floor. And there was lots of exciting new things to see.

While I was at the PLNS booth, I saw several network engineers from CLECs and from small Independents visiting and kicking the tires of the workign Pliant 3000. It looked like they had expanded their sales force again. They had a good size crowd attending from PLNS. And from what the old timers were saying, the product was coming out of the chute after the usual labor pains.

The product was working and demo-ing well in the booth. They had rack mounted versions and cabinet mounted versions. They were showing an end-to-end call using GR-303, which is critical. It sounded like the narrowband version was solid. They were also showing demos of the DSL versions of cards, but it sounded like they may not be customer ready yet.

The biggest thing was the announcement of the Twin Lakes trial. This is a small IOC and is right in the heart of their target market. They all seemed pumped up about being in a customer site again. And although no one talked about other trials, there were plenty of hints that Twin Lakes was not the only one. I hope that their next announcement is a CLEC, since the IOC trial announcement did not seem to be enough to hold the stock price above 8.

So, PLNS seems to have made good on step one of their plan to deliver a product to an attractive, yet rather small market. The team was larger and they seemed very up beat. There were customers in the booth. Now, the next step is to make their trial customers happy and start growing revenues. I continue to believe that PLNS will soon have the same extravagent market cap that other small to medium sized telecomm access companies have. Go PLNS.

This blurb was in the Milwaukee journal newspaper:
Q:I know currently DSL is limited to approximately 2.2 miles from a central office. Do you
have any specifics about when that will expand? - Bob Sarver of Kimberly

A: Under an initiative called Project Pronto, Ameritech is upgrading its central switching centers and
creating "neighborhood gateways," which will move DSL equipment closer to more neighborhoods and
increase the speeds available to users while increasing the range.

Some of these gateways are already in place but have not been activated for DSL service yet. They're
currently providing regular phone service but should begin boosting the range of DSL within the next
couple of months.

If all goes according to plan, by the end of 2002 about 80% of Ameritech and other units of SBC
Communications Inc. will have access to DSL service.

Do you know what product Ameritech and SBC is using for projec5t pronto (got to like the name)? What does this mean for PLNS

Don't know if PLNS is involved directly....I don't think so. But here is a link where you can gather some information about PRONTO. I'm still holding a core PLNS position, but I'm not expecting any real action until Q4 2000/ Q1 2001.

Here is another press release from PLNS. I am getting a very positive feeling from these guys. They are clearly ramping up the PR machine. To me that means that they believe that they are going to have something to say as the year progesses. And if it sounds like the Wisconsin Telecomm association is small potatoes, in the world of independent telcos, it's not. Getting in at 6 seems like a great bet and one I have made.

Should get interesting this year for plns, by the way, shorti's pick avenue just put a buy out on plns on friday i think , Im betting once we get earnings out of the way its going to get explosive again. I like the fiber angle, should get dug up soon by all the people that have missed the runs in some of the other new telecom infrastructure plays. sure hope so,, i remember the days when this one was a high-flyer years ago,, love to see it again

Pliant Systems Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: PLNS - news) announced today that it intends to seek Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina in order to facilitate an orderly sale of substantially all of its business and assets to a third party.
