If one can gain any guidance from the breakup of Standard Oil in 1911, the shareholders of Microsoft could be the big winners! At the conclusion of the Standard Oil Sherman Anti-trust Act case in 1911, Standard Oil was broken up into a total of 34 companies. In the next 10 years, the value of the old Standard Oil's constituent companies quintupled. John D. Rockefeller's 25% interest in Standard Oil was worth $300 million in 1911. By the end of 1913, his 25% interest in the constituent companies was worth $900 million. "Titan - The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.", Ron Chernow pp. 556-557.
Other than Microsoft shareholders, I would assume that Sun and AOL would be two companies that could benefit from a weakening of Microsoft. I would point out that an increase in value to MSFT shareholders and a weakening of Microsoft are not mutually exclusive. MSFT's components may be worth more, in toto, as separate entities than as a part of a huge corporation. |

Take MSN and Explorer. What do you get? AOL. Which would you rather own?
Take Windows 2000 and buy a hardware company. What do you get? SUNW. Which would you rather own? |

Jamie- IBM has made a big bet on Win2000 and I think it's a smart bet. If you read Judge Jackson's Finding of Facts you'll see Paragraphs 115 to 132 are devoted to the damage inflicted on IBM PC Company by Microsoft. This damage liability is a huge number, many time more than Netscape's but I doubt that Lou will ever bother to collect on it.
Better that he has a loaded gun right on Bill's temple.
So it will be "Be nice to IBM" time at Microsoft for a long while and that will help IBM's stock immensely.

BTW- The breakup has already started. Most of the money flowing out of Microsoft is going into non-Windows solutions.
