Should we re-name this thread " .... and without any substance" ?

(Sorry, couldn't resist).

Jon.

Since I qualify as an oldtimer with the Q, I can't help but think back as my hands finally recover from the white knuckles days. A year ago I decided after all the predictable ups & downs to trade 20% of my Q position and made $. Mostly I did it to keep from going crazy waiting for this day to come. In order to hedge a miss, I always kept a pocketfull of calls a couple of months out.
I feel like I know the oldtimers because we held on when it was very dark. Thanks again to all. Our family is bigger now. We'll adjust.

Tony

PS ( which I use to honor Clark ) Every 10 pts equals my past annual earnings. The wait has been well worth it

I won't tell you what every $10 does for us. (But, we are not complaining).

(And, it will be real interesting when we finally have a big down day).

(Uh-oh, George Gotch alert !).

Jon.

OK--Back to business. This appeared this am. What impact on the Q?

MCI WorldCom, Nextel in Talks
Wired News Report

7:30 a.m. 6.Apr.99.PDT
MCI WorldCom, the telecom giant without
a wireless presence, is in talks to fill the
gap with the purchase of Nextel
Communications, sources said on
Tuesday.

Nextel is the last of the independent
national wireless phone companies, and
has been seen as a ripe takeover target
for more than a year. Speculation
intensified in January when rival AirTouch
Communications received acquisition
offers from two suitors and agreed to be
acquired by Britain's Vodafone Group.

The talks were described as "very
preliminary," and the chances of reaching
an agreement were put at no better than
50 percent.

Shares of Nextel (NXTL) have gained
nearly 68 percent since the beginning of
the year. Nextel's shares traded at
$41.375, up $1.75, in pre-market trading
on Tuesday, while shares of MCI
WorldCom (WCOM) fell $1 to $91.50 in
pre-market trading, traders said.

Among the factors that could prevent a
deal, according to sources: price, Nextel's
substantial debt load, and MCI WorldCom
chief Bernie Ebbers' aversion to
acquisitions that dampen the company's
earnings.

BTW: Mike, nice thought on the new thread. I'd stopped reading the old one. Couldn't take the volume.

Best,
JS

John, all: (I hope I am an old-timer -- been in Q much longer than I've been on SI) I think it depends on the possibility of a 3g overlay onto NXTL's system.

My own feeling is that WCOM will pay so much for NXTL, but above a certain price they will choose to build their own spanking new system.

WCOM is very focused on data, and IMHO would be unlikely to not have a plan for wireless data up their sleeve. Either way it would be good for Q b/c of the royalties -- whatever they do will eventually involve CDMA.

To all, I bought my first QCOM in January 96 for 39 7/8 -- that should qualify me as an oldtimer. Can we change the title of this thread to include a definition of "old-timer"? e.g. "QCOM veterans/holders B.E. (Before Ericsson)". Maybe what is needed is a "QCOM for Engineers" thread since I perceive the quality of the engineering analysis to have been one of the primary strengths of the QCOM SI community before all of these "It's up, therefore I must buy it" posters came aboard.

Regarding the WCOM buyout of NXTL, what will it involve for them to switch to CDMA? Will that affect the walkie-talkie feature that is their main competitive advantage?

QCOM Veterans Rule!!!

I don't know who qualifies as a "veteran" or "old-timer" but I wasn't aware threads on SI can be "restricted" to certain categories of members. And then you are shutting out newcomers who may well have valuable contributions to make. I submit that, after a period of effervescence following Q's big recent move, those who are not genuinely interested in Q as an investment will probably leave the "main" thread of their own accord.
