The Japan-based Kobe Steel has apparently entered into a licensing
agreement with NTT (Nippon Telephone & Telegraph, basically Japan's AT&T) for rights to use the TwinVQ codec in a portable digital audio player called "SolidAudio." TwinVQ, also known by its file extension .VQF, was developed separately from MP3 technology. This is in contrast to AAC, which extends MP3 technology. While AAC has a small technical edge over TwinVQ, both sound distinctively better than MP3 at equivalent bitrates. david.weekly.org |

RIO player with upgraded memory will hold 16 CD quality songs. You can add or delete songs in seconds. It doesn't take 10 min to encode a MP3, try a minute or two. Battery lasts 12 hours. Okay, how long will 1 AA battery last running a portable CD player? The RIO is 1/3rd the size of a portable CD player. No moving parts.
Downloading a MP3 file (legal one) say 3.5 MB takes about 40 seconds on a cable modem connection.

Japan seems to have all the new toys and gadgets well before we ever see them on the shelves.
Look at HDTV for example.
The format is the key, there has to be one standard format that the recording ind accepts. I highly doubt it will be MP3, so which one? Don't know, maybe it's still on the drawing board or in someones mind, but there will be one soon.

I have a number of MP4 songs I downloaded. Nice format. You don't need a player as the player is built into the song. Just click on the song and a nice mini player along with the song shows up.
Kinda neat, but I don't know how it's going to catch on.
We are seeing allot of new companies and products testing the waters. Some are going to make it, so won't.
That's the hard thing to predict.
I had a link to the creator of the MP4, When I find it, I'll post it.
