Just A Word of Encouragement:
I've had this thread book marked just about from the start and even though it's a fairly slow thread, I want to thank you for your recent posts and continuing effort which really help me keep up with what's going on in this new arena. I'm waiting for the day to by my CD writer when I can buy songs 1 at a time over the net and chose the ones I like when I like. As long as it's around a buck a song, I won't complain ('ya know, competetive with 12 songs per $12 CD). |

Hooked it up, now I can listen to MP3's on my car stereo.
I believe 100% that the distribution of music will be via the Internet. I give it 3-5 years as we need the high speed Internet access. Cable and telephone lines are in every home in Canada and USA, but large portions need to be upgraded to handle high speed Internet access. The average size of an MP3 or MP4 file is 3-4 megs. On cable I can download one of these in 20-30 seconds.
The record industry better not discount MP3 as it still poses a threat. MP3 is not as good as a CD, but just as Beta and VHS, Beta was superior, but VHS won. MP3 is free, so the music industry has to be "open minded" and develop a downloadable (copy protected) file that can be installed and played on your computer, home stereo, portable and car stereo.

Click on MP3. You will soon be able to download novels, news, poetry, self improvement and many other titles that were available in print or on cassette.
I'm trying to keep on top of it, but it's changing daily.
BTW,
Once you buy a CDR, you will wonder how you managed without one.

I believe the format will change, and one day there will be a standard format even accepted by the music industry.

CK: Thanks again for the link. While surfing off that lead on ZD's site, I found this really interesting interview w/ the head of Kodak regarding their digital future. You may have seen it, but it has some futuristic parallels to what you've been seeing in the music business.

I actually found the article by accident trying to figure out why EDIG went from about .75 to 1.50 today. The good news was released a week ago so I don't yet know what happened. There is a SI message board (no Yahoo board yet) so I will back up the list a few days and try to get the scoobie. |
